Henry G. Kuhn, loved travel, steam engines
Henry G. Kuhn just missed two milestones in his life.
Traveling almost exclusively by car, Kuhn made it to every state in the United States, except for Alaska.
And having married his high school sweetheart, he enjoyed a long and happy marriage. When he died at 4:50 a.m. Saturday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, he and Patricia Lee Kuhn were just six months shy of their 50th wedding anniversary.
"They were really looking forward to their golden anniversary," said his sister, Rose Marie Abbott of Fort Thomas, Ky.
Mr. Kuhn, 68, of Taylor Mill, Ky., was a retired estimator for the Standard Publishing Co. in Cincinnati. He was born in Indiana and lived part of his adult life in Monroe, Ohio.
Mr. Kuhn was also a steam locomotive enthusiast and loved the Cincinnati Zoo.
Other survivors include daughters, Tami M. Thompson of Liberty Township, Ohio, and Joy F. auf dem Kampe of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
Services were Monday at Webb Noonan Funeral Home, Hamilton, Ohio. Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery, Hamilton. Memorials are suggested to Senior Citizens, Ross Avenue and C Street, Hamilton, Ohio 45013.

Dr. Beverly Carpenter, stood by friend Schott
Dr. Beverly A. Carpenter, 55, a devoted and longtime friend of Marge Schott who defended the embattled Reds owner while others criticized her, died Tuesday.
Dr. Carpenter, a rheumatologist, stood by Mrs. Schott, when others - including Major League Baseball - abandoned her because of insensitive and racist comments.
Dr. Carpenter defended her friend as loving but sometimes misunderstood.
"Marge loves without limit, without stop," she said in 1992 after Mrs. Schott made a comment about Hitler. During the 1994 baseball season, Dr. Carpenter treated former Reds catcher Joe Oliver for a hereditary arthritic condition. Survivors include a daughter, Mary L. Carpenter of Newaygo, Mich.; a sister, Susan Ballard of Newaygo; a niece, Shawn Ballard, and a nephew, Stefan Ballard, both of Indianapolis, Ind.
Services: 5 to 8 p.m. March 18 at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home and Crematory, 5950 Kellogg Ave., Cincinnati. Memorials: Southwest Ohio Arthritis Foundation or to the Animal Rescue in Amelia, Ohio.

Minnie Eleanor Davis, civic leader
Minnie Eleanor Davis, a community leader and music teacher, died Monday. She was 93.
Mrs. Davis leaves her husband of 70 years, Jacob E. Davis, former chairman and CEO of the Kroger Co.
Among her community projects, Mrs. Davis was a board member and past president of the Visiting Nurse Association of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.
Other survivors: a son, Jacob E. Davis II of Columbus, and a daughter, Eleanor Davis Nelson, of Cincinnati.
Memorial services: 4 p.m. Monday at the Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the church. Burial will be private at Spring Grove Mausoleum. Gilligan Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Edwin Friedhoff, florist
Edwin Friedhoff, founder of Friedhoff Florist and Greenhouses in Delhi Township, died Wednesday. He was 84.
Mr. Friedhoff and his wife of 60 years, Ethel, started the business at 700 Anderson Ferry Road from scratch in 1949, Mrs. Friedhoff said.
"It was a lot of work but we worked together," Mrs. Friedhoff said. Drawing on the experience of their parents - his family grew vegetables, her parents were florists - they started with just property. The business blossomed into a success with gardens and greenhouses.
Mr. Friedhoff was a past president of Cincinnati Flower Growers Association and was on the board of directors of the Ohio State Florists Association.
He was also an avid golfer, who joined a weekly league at Woodland Golf Course.
Mr. Friedhoff was a member of the church board at St. John United Church of Christ and was a treasurer of St. John Cemetery Board. A Winton Place native, he was also a member of the Norwood-Winton Place Lodge #576 F&AM and the Winton Place Veterans.
Mr. Friedhoff is also survived by his sons, Edwin A., of New Alsace, Ind., and Doug K., of Delhi Township; a daughter, Marsha D. Friedhoff, of Green Township; brothers Richard, of Winton Place, and Harry, of Finneytown; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, St. John United Church of Christ, 1085 Neeb Road, Delhi Township.

Ray Berling, Marine hero
Ray Berling's long, distinguished and decorated career with the U.S. Marine Corps included serving in World War II, the
Korean War and in Vietnam. And after he retired, he devoted much of his time to youth groups in Cincinnati.
Mr. Berling of Colerain Township died Wednesday. He was 75.
He joined the Marines as a teen-ager and rose through the ranks, retiring as a major in 1968 after serving more than 27 years. During his career he was a drill instructor at Parris Island, S.C., and a recruiter in Cincinnati.
In World War II, he participated in a number of battles and served throughout the war with the First Marine Division, including landing at Guadalcanal in 1942. He was wounded in action in 1944.
With the First Marine Division in Korea, he participated in the capture of Seoul and the battle of the Chosin Reservoir.
In 1962 he was the commanding officer of the first Marine contingent sent to Guantanamo Bay during the Cuban Crisis.
Mr. Berling served three tours of duty in Vietnam.
He won numerous service medals, including the Silver Star, Bronze Star Combat Medal, Purple Heart, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.
Mr. Berling was active in a number of veterans organizations, including the Marine Corps League. He also was National Commandant of the Marine Corps League.
In 1994, he was inducted in the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame.
He was a volunteer at the Veterans Administration Hospital here and donated time to the Amvets. After his retirement from the service, Mr. Berling became active in a number of youth groups in Mount Healthy where he lived for years.
Mr. Berling leaves his wife of 53 years, Maryellen Humig Berling; a son, Richard R. Berling; two daughters, Nancee Hubbard and Sandra Simmons; a brother, Louis "Skipp" Berling; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Services: 10 a.m. Monday at the Chas. A. Miller Sons Funeral Home, Hamilton Avenue at Knowlton, Northside. Interment with military honors will be at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, in Montgomery.
Visitation: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with a Marine Corps League Service at 5 p.m.
