Rev. Middendorf was lover of nature
The Rev. Frederic G. Middendorf's two loves in life were being a Jesuit priest and teaching biology.
Rev. Middendorf most recently was an associate pastor at St. Francis Xavier Church in downtown Cincinnati. He died Sunday at age 86.
Friends and colleagues remembered Rev. Middendorf as a lover of nature who extolled the beauty of creation both in the classroom and from the pulpit.
"He taught generations of people biology, and he always had the respect of his students," said the Rev. Bill Verbryke, president of St. Xavier High School, where Rev. Middendorf taught from 1959 to 1991.
"He loved biology, and he loved being a teacher," Rev. Verbryke said.
Rev. Middendorf went on to a second career as associate pastor of St. Xavier Church, where he was a sought-after spiritual adviser and retreat leader. He developed and directed the "Sisters Saturdays of Renewal" lecture series for Roman Catholic nuns in Greater Cincinnati.
For 29 years, he arranged a monthly day of prayer, retreat and meditation for the religious sisters, finding Jesuits from all over to volunteer their time with the nuns.
"He was loved by the people of the parish for his gentleness and compassion," said Sister Caroline Benken. "He was often sought out for the sacrament of reconciliation (confession)."
Rev. Middendorf was born in Covington, Ky., in 1913. He graduated from Covington Latin School at the age of 16 and entered the Jesuit novitiate at Milford, Ohio, that same year. He was ordained a priest in 1942.
Rev. Middendorf served a 16-year tenure at University of Detroit High School, where he taught math and religion and counseled students. He moved to St. Xavier High School in 1959.
Rev. Middendorf's other interests included gardening, photography, golf and astronomy.
He is survived by a sister, Ruth Thorburn of Ludlow, Ky.; a brother, Richard Middendorf of LaGrange, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Xavier Church, 607 Sycamore St., with a funeral Mass following immediately. Burial will be in the Milford Jesuit Cemetery.

A professional musician as well as a chiropractor, Dr. Reaver once played banjo on Mississippi riverboats to help pay his way through college. He also played with the Bix Beiderbeck Band.
A graduate of the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, in 1923, Dr. Reaver was a chiropractic pioneer and was honored as "one of the most jailed chiropractors in the world" by the Life University School of Chiropractic.
