Greg Lee 'Hoag' Starnes, antique dealer
Greg Lee "Hoag" Starnes, who owned Greg's Antiques in downtown Cincinnati and North ern Kentucky for 32 years, died Friday at University Hospital in Cincinnati. He was 71.
Mr. Starnes, of Edgewood, was a telephone installer and repairman for Cincinnati Bell for 31 years. In 1968, while still working for Cincinnati Bell, he bought a small used furniture store on Elm Street.
"He wanted to do that on Saturdays as a part-time business," said his son, Jeff. "He had four boys and he thought we could work there weekends and for summer jobs."
The used furniture store turned into a family antique business that continues today with two stores in Cincinnati, including imported antiques from England and France.
Mr. Starnes named the store "Greg's Antiques," after his eldest son, Greg.
He treated customers as guests. It wasn't unusual for him to offer a customer a soft drink. He was a story teller who reveled in sharing the history of unusual pieces.
"My dad always stressed that people were the most important part of the business," said his son, Jeff.
"He taught us to go out of your way to treat people right. He would do a little extra."
He was diagnosed with a lung disease two years ago, but continued to work at the store when possible.
"People were his best therapy," his son said.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia; Cincinnati Bell Pioneers; and Masonic Lodge No. 109, Covington.
