Rev. Larry Gardner, director of Baptist Center, pantry
Rev. Larry H. Gardner, 63, of Forest Park, died Monday.
He was director of the Cincinnati Baptist Center, Over-the-Rhine, and was responsible for the operation of the Soup Kitchen, Soup Pantry and Clothes Closet at the center.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Marjorie Howard Gardner; a son, Richard Gardner; daughters, Michelle Gardner, Amy Gardner and Kathy Gardner; and sisters, Jeannette Patterson, Beverly Ayers, Nadine Norton and Arlene Bartlett.

William Betts, real estate broker
Services were today for William H. Betts, whose long career in real estate spanned more than half a century.
Mr. Betts of College Hill died Friday after a lengthy illness. He was 82.
A native Cincinnatian, he attended the University of Cincinnati where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He joined the old Title Guarantee and Trust Co. in 1939 as a salesman and real estate appraiser for the firm's mortgage loan company.
During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946.
After his
military service he received his real estate broker's license and started his own business, dealing primarily in property management and real estate appraising.
During his career, Mr. Betts worked in the city of Cincinnati's Building Division as an appraiser. He was a past president of the Cincinnati Chapter of the National Institute of Real Estate Management and a past president of the Clovernook Country Club.
He leaves his wife of 58 years, Erna V. Betts and two daughters, Judith Betts McCane and Linda Yeager, and three grandchildren.

Nathan Runyan, 15, loved baseball, wrestling
Nathan Runyan, a 15-year-old baseball player and Boy Scout from Covedale, died S unday awaiting heart and lung transplants.
Nate loved baseball and swimming and had lots of friends, said his grandmother, Mary Ann Mark, of Bridgetown.
"He was positive he was going to get a heart and lung and that in two years he would be able to do everything (again)," she said. "Otherwise, he said if he couldn't play baseball after he got his new heart, he would maybe coach or be a manager."
Once Nate became really sick and needed 24-hour care, he moved from his mother's residence in Covedale to live with Mrs. Mark and her husband, Richard. There he and his best friend, Scott Saling, who lived next door, played video games and traded Pokemon cards.
"They were real buddies," she said. "They played Nintendo 64 and Pokemon - Pokemon was the big thing with them."
Nate was a student at Dater Junior High School in Westwood last year where he gained the nickname "Pee-wee" from security guards. He was unable to attend high school this year because of his health.
"Everybody that I talked to said they remember his smile," Mrs. Merk said. "He just loved everybody."
Nate also was a big wrestling fan, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation took him to meet professional wrestler Steve Goldberg. His mother, Julie Runyan, also arranged for him to meet Mark McGwire.
He also is survived by his father, Terrance Runyan; his sisters, Meagan, 13, and Stacy, 11, both of Covedale; his paternal grandmother, Cecilia Runyan ; his great-grandmother, Idella Merk, of Miami Heights; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Beacher Bastin, loving dad, spent career in railroading
Beacher V. Bastin loved his life as a railroad man and relished telling ra ilroad adventures to his family and friends.
Mr. Bastin, 75, of Sycamore Township, died Sunday.
Known as "B.V. Bastin" to his fellow railroaders, he worked for the old Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and later the Chessie Railway System for 35 years as a conductor and crew master. His love of the trains was something he enjoyed sharing with everyone, his family recalled
. "He was always telling railroad stories," said a daughter, Debra Braswell.
Mr. Bastin also was a dedicated family member who raised his large family in Glendale. An active member of the Northern Hills Nazarene Church, he was proud that his family filled an entire church pew.
During World War II, he was a member of the U.S. Army's 48th Amphibian Truck Co., serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Mr. Bastin was awarded two Bronze Stars for service in the Philippines.
He leaves his wife, Margie Bastin; five other daughters, Verna Smith, Brenda Magrino, Melenie Meyers, Alicia Svach and Laurel Rousch; a son, Glen Foust, all of Greater Cincinnati; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Rev. George Gude, St. Clare pastor
In addition to his long service as a priest, the Rev. George Gude is being r emembered as an athletic man who loved the outdoors.
Father Gude died Saturday. He was 94. A mass was held Tuesday night at St. Clare Church in College Hill.
He was a priest in the Cincinnati Archdiocese for 67 years. He was pastor of St. Clare Church from 1948 until his retirement in 1975 and was instrumental in the building of the present structure.
He also served at St. Elizabeth Church in Norwood, St. Boniface Church in Northside and at the Fenwick Club. He lived in Bridgetown for many years.
"He was very athletic," said Joe Godar, whose wife Margie was a niece of Father Gude.
Father Gude played baseball while attending the University of Dayton and "really enjoyed hunting and fishing," said Mr. Godar. He also was a member of the Northside Council, Knights of Columbus.

Robert Nelsen, engineer at GE
Robert Nelsen, 79, of Finneytown, a General Electric engineer who opened his hom e to refugees and others in need, died Monday of cancer.
Born in Homer, Neb., Mr. Nelsen's work toward a mechanical engineering degree at South Dakota State University was interrupted by World War II.
He piloted a troop-carrying airplane, dropping paratroopers in Sicily and Normandy on D- Day. He was wounded on D-Day and awarded a Purple heart.
After receiving his mechanical engineering degree, Mr. Nelsen came to Cincinnati to work for General Electric as manager of technical publications and a service representative. He retired from GE in 1971 after 24 years of work.
Over the years, Mr. Nelsen and his wife of 55 years, Margaret, welcomed people who needed housing to their home. The Nelsens took in refugees, students from Vietnam and a family with a child at the Shriners Burns Institute. "Everyone was always welcome," said Mr. Nelsen's brother, James. "They made them part of their family."
Mr. Nelsen was a Finneytown School Board member for 12 years, a board member of Travelers Aid International Institute for 12 years and a two-time president of the Scandinavian Society of Cincinnati.
He also was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he served as president of the congregation, building committee chairman and Sunday School teacher.
"He liked to get involved in organizations he cared about and, more than likely, he became a leader," said James Nelsen.
Other survivors include sons James of Jacksonville, Fla., Donald of Bossier City, La., and Robert of Fairfield, brother Paul of Fort Collins, Colo., sister Viola Pafford of California, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. today at Faith Lutheran Church, 8265 Winton Road, Finneytown, followed by funeral services at the church at 11 a.m.
