Sister Agnes Zita Wewe, helped sick, elderly
Sister Agnes Zita Wewe, 90, an advocate for the elderly and the sick, died Sunday.
The 73-year member of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati is remembered for her courage in dealing with chronic arthritis and the gentle humor with which she dealt with others, said a friend, Sister Marie Tessmer.
"Although she suffered with pain for many years, her physical limitations never dampened her spirit."
Yet Sister Agnes Zita gained a measure of notoriety in 1975 when an Associated Press story and photo showed her visiting shut-ins in Kenton, Ohio, while riding a battery-powered scooter provided by parishioners for her arthritis.
The photo wound up on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" after being published in newspapers nationwide.
"Imagine a little old nun and her yellow scooter getting all that publicity!" friends recall her saying.
