Brother Paul Wilhelm aided poor
Dedicated to serving the poor, Brother Paul Wilhelm, a member of the Cincinnati-based Glenmary Home Missioners, spent much of his life helping provide houses for families in rural areas.
Brother Wilhelm, 67, who died Thursday, helped build houses for low-income families in Georgia, North Carolina, Mississippi and Alabama. During one four-year span, he helped build 14 houses.
'Brother Paul was a man filled with faith in God and service to the rural and neglected poor of this country,' said the Rev. Jerry Dorn, president of Glenmary Home Missioners, a Catholic society of priests.
Brother Wilhelm, born in Mascoutah, Ill., was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in 1972. After surgery, he recovered and continued his ministry for 13 more years. In 1985, his health forced him to cut back and serve inhouse at Glenmary headquarters.
'I see death as another step in the journey of life,' Brother Wilhelm said in 1991. 'I enjoyed my life and accept death as a blessing. I am open to God's blessings in death as I received God's blessings in life.'
Brother Wilhelm is survived by a sister, Marie, and brothers, Vincent, Lawrence and Arthur - all from the Mascoutah-Belleville, Ill., area; brother, Eugene, from Trenton, N.J.; and brother Paul, currently a pastor in San Fernando, Calif.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Our Lady of the Fields Chapel at the Glenmary Residence in Fairfield, Ohio. At 8 p.m., there will be a prayer service in the chapel. Memorials to Glenmary Home Missioners, P.O. Box 465618, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45246-5618.
