James Thompson Sr., owned funeral home
Mortician James Anthony Thompson Sr., 82, died Sunday.
Mr. Thompson owned James H. Thompson & Son Funeral Home, founded by his grandfather in 1899 and believed to be the oldest African-American-owned business in southern Ohio. Last November, it merged with Hall-Jordan Funeral Home to become Thompson, Hall and Jordan. Mr. Thompson was a graduate of Woodward High School, Knoxville College and the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science.
He was a former member of the board of Major Federal Savings and Loan Co. and a member of the Allen Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church. He also was a member of True American Lodge and King Solomon Consistory.
Mr. Thompson was an Army veteran of World War II who earned five Bronze Stars.
He belonged to Knoxville College Alumni Association, Buckeye State Funeral Directors Association, Ohio Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association.
He leaves sons James Anthony Thompson Jr., James Anatole Thompson and James Arnold Thompson; daughters, Janice Charrie Thompson and Sandra Early; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Carl Moon Jr., ran Mt. Healthy bake shop
For Carl Moon Jr., baking was his life's passion.
At 14, he became an apprentice baker; at 16, he became a master baker. When he came back from World War II, he opened up his own shop - the Moon Bakery in Mt. Healthy.
"He made some of the best bread and buns ever," said his daughter, Jenny Lee Crone of Wilmington, N.C. "He was a great baker. He was an old-fashioned baker."
Mr. Moon, formerly of West Union, Ohio, and Cincinnati, died Friday in Wilmington, N.C. He was 78.
Mr. Moon operated the Moon Bakery for 40 years until he sold it in the 1970s and retired to a farm in West Union. He moved to North Carolina in 1996, shortly before the death of his wife.
An Army veteran, he also leaves daughter Carol Jo Adleta of White Oak; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

William L. Ahlert, architect and city official
William L. Ahlert, 84, architect and former Cincinnati building commissioner, died Sunday.
The University of Cincinnati graduate served as a Navy Seabee during World War II and worked more than 30 years with the Cincinnati Park Board and Building Department before becoming building commissioner. His original architectural designs - such as the slide in Burnet Woods - can still be seen in parks and the Cincinnati Zoo.
After retiring, he dedicated his life to music, gardening, and Mt. Auburn Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Mt. Washington Men's Garden Club and the American Theater Organ Society, working to reconstruct the Wurlitzer from the old Albee Theater to the Emery Theater.
As an ordained elder of the Presbyterian Church, Mr. Ahlert served as chairman of his church's last major building expansion. Mr. Ahlert sang in the church choir and composed music for religious services at the church.
He leaves his wife, Mary Ruth Ahlert; sons, Glen Ahlert of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Carl Ahlert of Winter Park, Fla.; daughter, Carolyn Ahlert of Anderson Township; and two grandchildren.

Claude W. Johnson Jr., 82, chairman and chief executive officer of Johnson Electric Supply Co., died Sunday. The Ft. Thomas, Ky., resident was a fund-raising chairman for the American Cancer Society; Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce chairman; a past president of the Cincinnati Optimist Club; board member of the National Association of Electrical Distributors; and member of the Young Presidents Association, the Chief Executives Forum and the Cincinnati 49ers.
Mr. Johnson co-founded the Committee of 500 political reform group of Campbell County.
