Mires Stine: Bullet couldn't stop him
The same day in 1947 that Mires Christian Stine and another Cincinnati police detective were wounded in a gunfight with a robbery suspect, his photograph appeared on The Post's front page.
The detective wore a confident smile in his hospital bed. One arm was casually draped between his head and the pillow, even though his other wrist had been shattered by a bullet.
Mr. Stine, who served the Cincinnati Police Division from 1936 to 1966, and who later worked five years for the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, died Saturday at his Mt. Washington home after a 9 1/2-year battle with cancer. He was 83.
Mr. Stine, who was then 32, and the other detective had apprehended four robbery suspects, when one pulled a gun and began firing. Mr. Stine threw himself at the suspect while Det. Matthew Meldon shot the man four times. Both detectives were wounded but didn't realize it. Mr. Stine, wrestling with the man, lifted his own pistol. "I rammed it into his hair and pulled the trigger," he told a reporter afterward.
Mr. Stine, who was wounded one other time in his career, served on security details for the Eisenhower inauguration in Washington, D.C., and for Richard Nixon's 1960 presidential campaign stop here. He also worked 10 years in Fifth Third Bank's security department.
A 60-year Mason, he belonged to Yeatman-Mt. Washington Lodge 162 F.&A.M.
Mr. Stine leaves his wife of 63 years, Leona E. "Betty" Stine; son Mires C. Stine Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa.; daughters Joan Ayer of Milford, Nancy Boyles of Mariemont, and Janice Fuller of Anderson Township; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
