Joseph A. Hall, business leader
Joseph A. Hall was a highly respected man in both the business and social welfare communities in Greater Cincinnati, colleagues say.
Mr. Hall, 89, died Monday at Deaconess Hospital.
In 1948, Mr. Hall began his association with the Division of Negro Welfare which was the forerunner of the Urban League of Greater Cincinnati. As the Urban League's first executive director, he worked to bring about positive social changes in breaking discrimination barriers.
"Joe Hall brought people together around issues in which they agreed so that they could resolve issues in which they did not agree," said United Way President Dick Aft. "(He) built bridges among diverse people where none existed before."
Mr. Hall retired from the Urban League in 1973.
He was a certified social worker and a past president of the National Association of Social Workers Cincinnati and Ohio chapters. He served as an officer with the National Urban League Council of Executive Directors, the Ohio Welfare Conference and the Ohio Advisory Council for Vocational Education. He also served on the Cincinnati Musical Festival Association Board and the Children's Home Board, which later established a scholarship at the University of Cincinnati School of Social Work in his name.
Later in life, Mr. Hall was recognized with several awards for his lifetime achievement, including being honored by the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce as a "Great Living Cincinnatian."
He was a guest lecturer and consultant to more than 150 local business firms.
Survivors include his wife, Marguerite L. Clemmons; a son, Joseph A. Hall; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Marlene Holwadel, parks booster
Marlene Holwadel, a longtime Cincinnati Parks Board member and booster, died Wednesday at age 65.
Credited with renovating Ault Park in the early 1980s, Mrs. Holwadel also started the Park Board Volunteers and Krohn Conservatory gift shop, which she ran for nearly two decades, said her daughter, Lauren Niemes, of Cincinnati.
"She was a wonderful person," said Parks Board president Roger Ach.
Mrs. Holwadel was also a booster for her alma mater Withrow High School.
She leaves her husband, Kent; two other daughters, Kathy Holwadel of Cincinnati, and Jody Holwadel- Taylor of Los Angeles; a son, David Holwadel of Madeira; and five grandchildren.
A public service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Krohn Conservatory. Memorials may be made to Withrow Alumni Association Inc. No visitation. T.P. White Funeral Home is in charge.

Rev. Robert Hoffer, teacher, chaplain at Motherhouse
The Rev. Robert Hoffer, 78, of Delhi Township, died Friday. He was a Franciscan friar.
He retired in 1992 but had since ministered as chaplain at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity on Delhi Road.
Ordained in 1946, Father Hoffer was a teacher at Roger Bacon High School from 1946 to 1951, a parish priest and the treasurer of St. John the Baptist Province of Franciscan friars from 1961-66. Assigned primarily in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, he served as assistant pastor at St. Bonaventure in Cincinnati from 1959 to 1960, assistant pastor at St. Stephen in Hamilton from 1960 to 1961, pastor at Holy Family Church in Oldenburg, Ind., from 1972 to 1975, and pastor at St. Louis Church in Batesville, Ind., from 1978 to 1984. His last assignment in active ministry was at St. Mary's of Lourdes Parish, Metamora, Ill.
Survivors include brothers, Rev. Charles Hoffer of Covington, Rev. Francis X. Hoffer of Delhi Township and Ralph Hoffer of Lakeside Park; and a sister, Frances Hoffer of Ft. Mitchell, Ky.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Clement Church, St. Bernard. Visitation will be after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Rev. Elmer R. Moore taught at Purcell
The Rev. Elmer R. Moore, 74, who taught at Purcell High School in the 1940s, died Jan. 10 at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, Ky.
Father Moore served at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Ft. Mitchell, Ky., from 1954 to 1957 before transferring to St. Anthony Parish in Bellevue, Ky., and serving there until 1960. He then went to Lexington in 1960 and was chaplain and later pastor of the Newman Center at the University of Kentucky and taught at Lexington Catholic High School. He also was pastor at Lexington St. Paul Catholic Church. He retired in 1988.

Betty Showalter King, nurse and health-field professional
Betty Showalter King, 59, of Hyde Park, died Friday at Jewish Hospital in Kenwood.
She was a registered nurse and key member of the management group that opened Bethesda North Hospital. She later led the nursing team that help start Jewish Hospital in Kenwood. Mrs. King
then entered into mental health counseling and became director of case management at CRI, which serves mentally disabled persons.
