Les Wilson, founded weekly newspaper
Community newspaper founder Les Wilson, 73, of Lockland, died Saturday.
Mr. Wilson coined the phrase "the valley takes care of its own" during his 43 years as owner, editor and columnist of the Valley Courier.
Stricken by ill health last year, first breaking a hip, then suffering pneumonia, the Florida native had no money to cover funeral or burial expenses, said Mike Koewler, the current owner of the 4,600 circulation weekly.
"Some of the expenses connected to the burial and funeral were donated, but it's not enough," said Koewler. "If you don't count his cane and a few clothes, all his worldly goods would've fit in a cigar box."
Donations to cover burial related expenses are being accepted through Valley Cares, in care of the Valley Courier, 218 W. Benson St., Reading, Ohio, 45215.
Widowed since the 1950s, Mr. Wilson settled in the Reading area after World War II and spent much of his career writing columns. He leaves a brother, William Wilson, of Florida.
