Priscilla Connell, nature photographer

As a girl growing up on a Clermont County farm, Priscilla Harrison Connell liked to take nature hikes.

In her late 30s, after her children were in high school, she got a camera and began taking photographs.

Mrs. Connell proceeded to forge her love of nature and cameras into a career as an award-winning nature photographer whose pictures were included in Sierra Club and Audubon Society calendars and books.

"She blossomed with her photography," said Mrs. Connell's friend, Jan Watkins. "She had tremendous artistic talent."

Mrs. Connell, 70, of Terrace Park, died Wednesday after a seven-year battle against multiple myeloma cancer.

"Her doctor told her the average survival rate with that type of cancer was two years," said Ms. Watkins. "She went seven years. It had a lot to do with her will to live.

"Despite the pain, she continued to pursue her passion as a nature photographer. She told me, "I really don't want to die. I still have so much I want to do.' "

Mrs. Connell once recalled that her mother, a watercolor artist, taught her that "seeing" things was quite different that just "looking" at things.

"I suppose I like nature photography best, primarily from growing up on a farm," she had said. "I especially remember walking the creeks, turning over rocks for crawfish and wondering how water striders stay on top of the water."

Mrs. Connell studied music at Northwestern University and later taught violin and played violin with the Terrace Park Pops Orchestra.

She was married 50 years to Paul Connell, a retired physics teacher at Indian Hill and Anderson high schools, and the couple had five children.

Besides having her photographs published in nature publications, Mrs. Connell's work also was exhibited at places like the Cincinnati Nature Center, which she avidly supported.

Mrs. Connell also leaves sons Philip and Peter and daughters Phoebe Walters and Pamela Grafe. Her remains were donated to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for research on multiple myeloma cancer but memorials may be made to the Cincinnati Nature Center.
