Elaine Boynton, "Wellness Lady'
Elaine Boynton was known as "The Wellness Lady."
With college degrees in nursing, psychology and education, she forged a career in health care that emphasized staying well so you wouldn't have to get well.
"It was a novel idea in 1981 when she spearheaded "Wellness Week on Fountain Square,' " said one of Mrs. Boynton's friends, Peg Wyant.
"She was among the first to take a new approach - looking at health from a lifestyle standpoint, looking at prevention and wellness rather than illness."
Mrs. Boynton, 53, of Mt. Lookout, died Tuesday after a four-year battle with breast cancer.
She was co-founder and president of Corporate Health Consultants and previously was manager of Bethesda Health Inc. and director of Northern Ken tucky's District Health Department.
A native of Lancaster County, Pa., Mrs. Boynton graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a nursing degree in 1965, received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Wisconsin in psychology in 1972, and earned master's and doctorate degrees in education from the University of Cincinnati in 1978 and 1985.
Mrs. Boynton began her career in 1972 with the Social Health Association of Cincinnati, where she taught middle and high school students about health, drug and alcohol addiction, venereal diseases and sex education.
Later, she taught at UC, initiating the school's first courses in human sexuality and contemporary issues for women in 1978-79.
Ms. Wyant said Mrs. Boynton excelled in a great variety of roles - "educator, health-care professional, corporate consultant, writer, seminar leader, civic volunteer, community leader, hostess, wife, mother, working-mother and friend." She succeeded because she combined a "rare combination of brains, work ethic, facts, beauty, charm, wit and always a sense of humor."
Mrs. Boynton's survivors include her husband, Richard, and daughter, Alison.
