Vincent Berry, youth coach

It's been a rough week for the Max C. Fleischmann Boys and Girls Club in Avondale.

Some volunteer coaches are so overwrought they're unable to even enter the building.

On Tuesday about 300 people tied black and gold ribbons - team colors of the Avondale Warriors - around the tree where Vincent "Tubby" Berry often stationed himself to coach the football team of 9-year-olds. Then they went to his Avondale home, where ribbons were again tied around a tree.

Talbert House is providing crisis counseling to children and club coaches, some of whom saw him fatally shot at the team's benefit car wash in the 1000 block of Linn Street Saturday. Roxanne Ushery, 34, of the 5300 block of Eastknoll Court, Mount Airy, has been charged with his murder.

A baker by trade, Mr. Berry, 43, worked the last 10 years at Butternut Bread. Yet he will best be remembered in Avondale as the soft-spoken coach and co-founder of the Community Sports Organization.

Children and staff at the Max C. Fleischmann Boys and Girls Club will memorialize Mr. Berry - who also coached baseball, baseball and soccer - when they install a memorial photograph and a plaque inside the club.

"Basically the loss will mean devastation to the (football) program because he supervised a lot of kids," said Bernard Roberts, director of the Fleischmann Boys and Girls Club.

"He acted as a positive role model for a lot of kids who didn't have a father and he was very helpful wherever we needed him to be."

James Smith, co-founder of the Community Sports Organization, a group of men providing tutoring, sports supplies and coaches to underprivileged children, was also a friend.

"He was the type of person who never raised his voice to a kid," Smith said of Mr. Berry. "He had a different style of coaching than I've ever seen . . . You wouldn't believe how many friends he had. He was just such a nice guy."

Mr. Berry is survived by his wife, Cheryl Clemmons Berry; sons, Vincent and Justin Berry; daughters, Georgia and Betty; brothers, John Berry Jr., Glen Wayne and Ernest Berry; sisters, Delinda Berry Griffin and Michella Molden Jeffrey; and many uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. Saturday at old St. George Church (Christian Ministries Center), 42 Calhoun St., Corryville, with funeral services at 11 a.m.

Memorials may be made to the Max C. Fleischmann Boys and Girls Club, 3504 Washington Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45229.

Fifi Taft Rockefeller, proud of role as "town character'

The woman who called herself Fifi Taft Rockefeller, the self-described "town character of Cincinnati," died Saturday after an extended illness.

As near as anyone can tell, Fifi, as she was most commonly known, was about 82.

Known for her outrageous dress and multitude of causes - she even mounted campaigns to run for President of the United States and the vice presidency - Fifi was part Cherokee and 100 percent indomitable.

"She was an incredibly creative, generous and liberal woman who was interested in helping the downtrodden," said one close acquaintance.

"Fifi was extremely intelligent and she knew how use the legal system. I can't confirm this but she said she went to law school for a time."

Fifi also was known as a follower of the courtroom, frequently traveling to courtrooms around the country for trials of the famous and notorious.

When Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge Deidra Hair wrote a book on the legal system a few years ago, Fifi even earned a mention in it. Ms. Hair wrote an entire chapter on Fifi, calling it "The Mascot of Bedlam."

Born in Clark County, Ill., during World War I, Fifi told people she was a cousin of Presidents Truman and Kennedy. She also claimed to have been married to many famous men, hence her most frequently chosen last names of Taft and Rockefeller. Fifi also said she had children by Elvis and Howard Hughes.

Her birth name was Fay, and for a time she also was known as Fay (Fifi) Carpenter-Swain.

Fifi was a regular at the Our Daily Bread soup kitchen in Over-the-Rhine. A memorial service for her will be conducted there at 1 p.m., Aug. 12.

Fifi was cremated Saturday and her remains taken back to Illinois, friends said. Survivors include at least one daughter, Gay Caldwell, who lives in Cincinnati.
