Richard Lewis, rights activist
Over his life, Richard Lewis toppled many racial barriers in Cincinnati.
Mr. Lewis, 77, died Thursday at the Veterans Administration Medical Center of heart failure.
He was a union leader who wrote a job-posting agreement hailed as a positive way for blacks to use seniority to secure and earn jobs and advancements in the work force.
He also served for the West End Employment Committee to help blacks get jobs, the West End Development Corporation - where he supervised the development of 362 residential units - and was assistant bureau chief of the Ohio Department of Urban Affairs for Gov. John Gilligan in the 1970s.
He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Cincinnati and was a World War II veteran.
Mr. Lewis was an unsuccessful candidate for Cincinnati City Council in 1975. The city proclaimed March 22, 1996, as Richard Lewis Day for his accomplishments.
He taught at many area colleges and in the Cincinnati Public Schools before founding with his wife the private school, Cincinnati Community Academy in 1980. He retired in 1985.
He leaves his wife, Rachel of Avondale; mother, Iline Scott of Walnut Hills; daughter, Charlotte Lewis of Yellow Springs; sons, Richard Jr. and Mark of Oxford, Ohio; stepdaughters, Regina Wal lace, of Richmond, Va., Emma Kelly of Bond Hill and Sylvia Williams of Silverton; stepsons, Arnold Stenson of Avondale, Dwight Stenson of Pomona, Calif., Michael Walker of San Diego and Bill Walker of Hyde Park.

Theodore Benseler, physician
Dr. Theodore "Ted" Charles Benseler, 73, a Middletown, Ohio, family physician, died of lung cancer Wednesday at Hospice of Dayton.
The native of Long Island, N.Y., he practiced family medicine 41 years in Middletown.
After graduating Miami University, he did cancer research at Sloan Kettering Institute in New York, said his wife, Rita. He also graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathy Medicine and Surgery in Kirksville, Mo.
After illness forced his retirement, he recently began volunteering as a clinical instructor at Corwin Nixon Health Center and the Grandview Outpatient Clinic, both in Dayton.
Other survivors are a son, Dr. Jeffrey Benseler, Springboro; daughters, Pamela Patrie of Trenton, Ohio, and Nancy Price of Ashville, N.C.; a sister, Ruth Peters of Tucson, Ariz.; and five grandchildren.

Sister Richard Marie Elstro, 94, died Saturday.
She entered the convent of the Sisters of St. Francis of Oldenburg, Ind., in 1922 and made her final vows in 1928. Sister Richard Marie was a business teacher and among her assignments were Sacred Heart School in Cincinnati and the old Our Lady of Angels High School in St. Bernard.
She retired to the order's motherhouse in 1980.
