Rev. J. Schaeper, Elder principal
When the Rev. Jerome Schaeper became principal of Elder High School in 1988, he infused new life into the school's old motto.
"He came in and challenged us to follow our own motto, "Altiora' - the higher things," recalled Elder teacher Roger Rosen. "He thought we
should strive to be more than we were. We were already a good school. He made us a better school. His legacy is that he challenged us to be better."
Rev. Schaeper, 62, who took a leave of absence from Elder five months ago because of cancer, died Friday.
Under his leadership, more than $3 million was raised since 1992 to renovate the 75-year-old school in Price Hill.
"Father Schaeper is responsible for the largest renovation we've ever had," said Rosen. "Never in our history had we ever come close to the $3 million he raised. It's quite an achievement.
"And Father Schaeper made sure that every bit of the hard-earned money that people donated was put to good use. He personally directed the spending of it, down to the last nickel, to completely renovate every room, every corner, of the building.
"But more important than the physical improvements, Father Schaeper made us a better school academically and spiritually."
Rev. Schaeper's tenure at Elder climaxed a long career in Catholic education. He previously had been superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and before that was principal of a high school in suburban Dayton.
Born in 1934, Rev. Schaeper grew up in College Hill, where he attended St. Clare School. He graduated from Purcell High School, now Purcell-Marian High School.
He earned a bachelor's degree from Athenaeum of Ohio, a master's from Xavier University and a doctorate from Miami University.
Rev. Schaeper began his career as a classroom teacher at Alter High School in Kettering, a Dayton suburb, and was principal of the school from 1970-74.
He then moved into the central office of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, where he was superintendent of schools until 1983, when he became director of educational services for the archdiocese.
Throughout his career, he also had taught education administration classes at the College of Mount St. Joseph, Miami University at Oxford, the University of Dayton and Xavier University.
His final career move came in 1988 when he became principal of Elder, the largest all-male enrollment (1,000 students) high school in the archdiocese.
"To his credit, Father Schaeper decided to get back into the trenches again, so to speak," said Rosen.
"Most people would have just retired after the archdiocese positions, but he decided to get heavily involved at Elder."
During his tenure at Elder, the school had nine straight years of increased enrollment. Financial aid to students increased and an old debt of nearly $500,000 was erased.
Elder will be celebrating its 75th anniversary this coming school year with a series of events.
"It's a shame Father Schaeper won't be able to help celebrate the anniversary because he did so much to help the school as the anniversary approached," said Rosen.
"He loved Elder and will be greatly missed."
Survivors include brothers Raymond Schaeper of Anderson Township and Alvin Schaeper of Loveland, sisters Marian Young of St. Bernard and Joan Hilton of Anderson Township.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral, Eighth and Plum streets. Services will immediately follow visitation.
