Russell C. Henderly taught shop
Russell C. Henderly taught wood shop to hundreds of seventh-graders at Gamble Junior High School in his years as an industrial arts teacher.
Mr. Henderly taught at Gamble from the time it opened until he retired in 1979. In 1974, he was named outstanding teacher of the year by the American Industrial Arts Association.
"He was very personable. He was a born teacher," said his wife of 49 years, Betty Jane (Bates) Henderly. "He was everybody's friend."
Mr. Henderly, 76, died Thursday at his Westwood home. He was a 1947 graduate of Miami University in Oxford and received a master's in education from the University of Cincinnati. He was a World War II veteran and a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Westwood, where he was a trustee and a choir member. Other survivors include a son, Russell L. Henderly of Westwood; and a brother, Harry J. Henderly of Montgomery.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lori B. Conley.
Visitation was Sunday. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, 3011 Harrison Ave., Westwood. Burial services at Arlington Memorial Gardens will be private.

Jason Hall, 16, of Lawrenceburg
Jason Hall, a member of the Lawrenceburg High School swim team and a recipient of the Marge Wells Kindness Award, died Saturday after an automobile accident. He was 16.
Jason, a sophomore at the Indiana school, had been chosen by his teachers to attend a leadership conference. The Jason Hall Scholarship Fund has been established in his honor, and his family asks that memorial contributions be made there.
He leaves his parents, Michael Hall and Teresa Cullen Hall, and sister, Christen Hall, all of Lawrenceburg; paternal grandparents, Stanley and Gloria Hall of Guilford, Ind.; maternal grandparents, Richard and Helen Cullen of Lawrenceburg; and great-grandmothers, Flora Craig of Lawrenceburg and Loretta Hall of Aurora, Ind.

James A. Mills, surgeon
Dr. James A. Mills, 60, of Clifton, a faculty member of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine's department of surgery and a surgeon in local practice for more than 20 years, died suddenly Monday at his home.
Dr. Mills was a past president of the UC Medical Alumni Association and a member of the executive committee of Christ Hospital. During his career, he served on staffs at Christ, Bethesda, Deaconess and Mercy Anderson hospitals. He was a member of the AOA Honorary Medical Society and was an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Jeri Atwood Mills, and a daughter, Jodi Ann Mills.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Spring Grove Cemetery's Norman Chapel. Visitation: 10 a.m. at the chapel.

Herschel West, longtime educator
Herschel D. West, 88, a retired associate superintendent of the Hamilton County schools and a former superintendent of Brown County schools, died Monday at St. Francis-St. George Hospital.
Mr. West became Brown County superintendent in 1937 and served there for 17 years during which he also served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was superintendent of the Anderson-Forest Hills schools from 1954-62, then became associate superintendent of Hamilton County schools before retiring in 1971. Mr. West was involved in the creation of Great Oaks Vocational District and was a member of the board of directors of the Ohio and Hamilton County Retired Teachers associations. He leaves a son, James West of North Bend; sister, Dorothy Tullis; and three grandchildren. His wife, Lillian Shannon West, died in 1992.
