Kirch was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Hungarian immigrants. Beginning at the age of 13 as a boy soprano in his church choir, he was singing in 12 choirs by his senior year in high school. In New York, he sang with such renowned conductors as Robert Shaw and Peter Wilhousky.
He graduated from Brooklyn Technical School and, after a brief stint in the Navy, the University of Cincinnati. He won a Metropolitan Opera Scholarship, which he used to study voice at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
He sang various roles with the Music Drama Guild (later Cincinnati Music Theater) and with the Zoo Opera Chorus. He sang and directed choirs at a variety of churches and synagogues in the city, as well as the P&G Men's Chorus and the Middletown Civic Chorus.
Kirch also was a 12-year member of the May Festival Chorus and a 30-year member of the Cathedral Choir at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church.
He worked as an engineer for Procter & Gamble for 32 years, retiring in 1983.
He was married for 43 years until his wife, JoAnn, died in March 1994. He is survived by a son, Steve Kirch of Pleasanton, Calif.; and two daughters, Kimberly Kirch, and Carol Armstrong, both of Eastgate.
