Sherman Dye was long-time general counsel of Scripps
Sherman Dye, 81, former general counsel of the E.W. Scripps Co. and its subsidiaries, died Saturday in Cleveland.
Mr. Dye was responsible for tax work for Scripps Howard from 1948 until 1980. He served as general counsel of the E.W. Scripps Co., which owns The Cincinnati Post and Kentucky Post and WCPO-TV, from 1970 until January, 1982.
"Sherm Dye was a valued and trusted adviser," said Charles E. Scripps, chairman of E.W. Scripps Trust. "His hand helped guide Scripps to become the company it is today."
Mr. Dye oversaw the entire gamut of legal services, Scripps said, from counseling and business transactions, to defense of reporters jailed for contempt of court.
The Oregon native was a graduate of Oberlin College and received his law degree from Western Reserve University Law School in 1940.
Mr. Dye joined the Cleveland law firm of Baker, Hostetler & Patterson (now Baker & Hostetler) and became a partner in 1952. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Cleveland Bar Association, president of the Tax Club of Cleveland and a trustee of the First Baptist Church.
He and his wife, Jean, were married 58 years.
He also leaves sons, Peter S. Dye, of Oakland, N.J., Richard F. Dye, of Vernon Hills, Ill., and William T. Dye, of Millinocket, Me.; daughters, Kathleen L. Spaller, and Mary H. Dye, both of Kingsville, Ohio, and Alice Maechtlen, of Albuquerque, N.M., and 10 grandchildren.
Services: 4 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, Cleveland Heights. Arrangements: Brown-Forward Funeral Service, Shaker Heights, Ohio.

Sister Jane Anthony, of Booth Center
Sister Jane Anthony, 53, of Norwood, died Friday in an automobile accident while returning home from Florida. She was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Oldenburg, Ind.
For the past 10 years, Sister Jane ministered at the Catherine Booth Child Development Center in Avondale. She is remembered by friends as a woman with a caring spirit and a deep love of children.
Sister Jane was sensible and gentle, with a contagious laugh, said Sisters Rose Marie Weckenmann and Rose O'Brien, with whom she lived in Norwood. In her work with the children at the development center, she touched countless lives, they said.
Born in Missouri, Sister Jane lived there until she entered religious life in 1966. She went on to minister to people throughout Missouri and Indiana.
She leaves her mother, three brothers and four sisters.
