Cincinnati attorney Edward K. Halaby died June 5 at the age of 78.
Mr. Halaby, a longtime Mt. Washington resident, specialized in trial law, an area in which he was well-respected both for his ability and legal ethics. He practiced law from 1950 until his retirement in 1993.
"He could be a forceful guy," said his son, Dennis Halaby, who followed his father into law. "He made the decision to be a trial lawyer, so he had to be an outgoing guy by nature."
Mr. Halaby focused his abilities on civil law, at one time defending a client in a suit involving the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire.
He preferred personal injury work, his son said.

Cynthia Vindiola, 14, leaves legacy of unconditional love
Cynthia Vindiola lived only 14 years, but that was 10 years longer than the cancer victim had been expected to survive, and her mother is grateful for all the love she generated.
"Her greatest asset was unconditional love," said Anna Vindiola. "She touched people in an awesome way with her unconditional love. That's what she taught us.
"I've always known I could lose her, but I feel so fortunate to have been given such a gift. She has done what she was supposed to do on this Earth."
Cynthia, who lived in Glendale and was a patient of Starshine Hospice of Children's Hospital, died Wednesday. A former resident of Monterey, Calif., she was the subject of a column in The Post last month by Monterey writer Sharon Randall.
"Just before she died, she told me she loved me and I told her I loved her and that I was proud of her," said Mrs. Vindiola.
Cynthia, who moved with her mother to Glendale five years ago from California, was hospitalized at age 4 with an inoperable malignant brain tumor.
"Radiation caused her brain to swell," said Mrs. Vindiola. "She was in a coma and on a respirator. I'd been raised an atheist, but I decided to have her baptized in the hospital." After the baptism, she said, came a turning point.
"I told a nun (a hospital chaplain) that I didn't know how to pray. She said, "Just ask God for what you want.' So I did. I asked him to either take Cynthia right away or give her back to me. He gave her back for 10 years."
In the last decade, Cynthia lived with side effects of cranial radiation, including mental retardation and violent seizures, but she also was able to do many things she enjoyed - like coloring pictures, riding a carousel and becoming known as the girl who hugged and kissed everyone and told them, "I love you."
In March, she was found to have a second tumor, possibly caused by radiation.
"I'm missing her a great deal," said Mrs. Vindiola. "But even in death, she's still giving love. She had the most beautiful brown eyes and her corneas were transplanted in two other people. I was told they were a perfect fit."
Funeral arrangements and visitation were not available today.
