Dr. Robert C. Rothenberg, distinguished UC physician
Dr. Robert C. Rothenberg, one of the oldest living graduates of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and a member of the university's clinical faculty until recent years, died Monday evening at his home. He was 95.
Dr. Rothenberg graduated first in his class in 1928 from the College of Medicine. He also had attended Hughes High School and Harvard. He practiced internal medicine from 1932 until 1969, when he retired, although he continued teaching until the mid-1990s.
He and his wife, Jean (Weston) Rothenberg, were married for 68 years.
"He was extremely highly thought of as a teacher," said Jerry Ransohoff, a cousin of Mrs. Rothenberg.
"Some friend said only half in jest 'I've looked all over town to find someone who didn't like Bob Rothenberg, and couldn't find anyone'," he said.
In 1996, the university awarded him a distinguished alumni award. He also was a president of the Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, the Cincinnati Society for Internal Medicine and the Jewish Hospital medical staff, as well as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He was chairman of Jewish Hospital's Department of Internal Medicine, Ransohoff said.
In 1986, the Academy of Medicine presented him the Daniel Drake Humanitarian Award.
He also liked to throw a party at Rothenberg Elementary School in Over-the-Rhine on his birthday, May 5. The school was named for his grandfather, Louis Rothenberg, and the grandson would pay stipends to successful graduates of the school.
Weil Funeral Home, North Avondale, is in charge of arrangements.
