Mary Gruber, social worker
Mary E. Gruber, 85, a retired social worker and lifelong Cincinnatian, died Monday.
At age 52, she joined the Peace Corps. After a period of strenuous physical training, she was assigned to an island off the coast of Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Many of her Peace Corps associates became lifelong friends.
She was a University of Cincinnati graduate and a member of Theta Phi Alpha Sorority.
During World War II, Ms. Gruber worked at Wright Aeronautical in Evendale.
She then became a social worker at Catholic Charities, and was responsible for placing children with adoptive parents. Over the years, Ms. Gruber often maintained contact with the families and watched the children grow from a distance. She also delivered Meals on Wheels for 16 years.
Ms. Gruber loved to raise exotic flowers, was an avid reader and gourmet cook and a classical music lover, said her brother, Charles.
A year before her death, while living under full-time nursing care, she organized a dinner party at the Phoenix restaurant downtown for her closest family and friends.
She also leaves two other brothers, Robert of Highland Beach, Fla., and Paul of Cincinnati; sister Margaret Harland of Cincinnati; and 13 nieces and nephews.

Robert A. Giuffre, beverage executive
Robert Anthony Giuffre, 61, of Springfield Township, died Tuesday.
Mr. Giuffre has spent his career in the beverage and vending business, working with the 7-Up Bottling Co. and Servamation as a district manager.
Mr. Giuffre was a vice president of Coca Cola marketing and sales, and owner of Cup Vending Co. Until recently, he was co-owner of Automatic Refreshment Service in Blue Ash.
He leaves his wife, Virginia Giuffre; daughters, Kathy Lowks and Mary Giuffre; son, Robert A. Giuffre; stepson, Scott Francis; stepdaughter, Becky Francis; brother, John Giuffre; and nine grandchildren.

Edward Pomeroy, Lawrenceburg
Edward E. Pomeroy, 67, of Lawrenceburg, Ind., died Tuesday.
He was a banker and an Army veteran of the
Korean War. But he also served his community in many ways. He was a former president of Lawrenceburg Lions Club and the Dearborn Country Club; a former Greendale Police Commissioner and a member of Dearborn County Hospital Board.
He was a seven-year member of Lawrenceburg School Board and a state commissioner for the Emergency Medical Technician Committee. He also was a member of Greendale Planning and Zoning Board.

Eugene Stagnaro Sr., of Thriftway
Eugene J. Stagnaro Sr., 82, of Western Hills, longtime Cincinnati supermarket executive, died Wednesday.
Mr. Stagnaro was a former president of Thriftway Foods. He was a former vice president of Colonial Stores and worked with the Kroger Co. for 28 years. He began his career as a meat helper here in 1932.
Mr. Stagnaro leaves his wife, Beverly Stagnaro; a son, Eugene Stagnaro Jr.; a daughter, Janet Casey; and five grandchildren.
