SPENCERVILLE - Dean W. Miller
Died: Friday, November 30, 2001
Age: 76
SPENCERVILLE -- Dean W. Miller, 76, of Spencerville went to be with his Lord and Savior, at 10:40 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002 in his home following a five week illness.
He was born Dec. 8, 1925 in Spencer Township, Allen County, the son of Harry F. and Zoa Hannah Emans Miller. On June 18, 1949 he married Joan E. Hawk, who survives.
Mr. Miller was a 45 year member of the Spencerville Church of the Nazarene where he had served as treasurer, Sunday school superintendent and teacher and was a trustee. He was a member of the Spencerville Invincible Fire Company since 1952 where he had served as chief and president for several years and had served on the Spencerville Village Council.
During World War II, he served in the Army, 4th Armored Division, 8th Tank Battalion, D Company in Europe, where he received the Purple Heart for his injuries. He was a past member of the Harry J. Reynolds Post 191, American Legion.
Dean retired in 1985 following 42 years service with the Norfolk and Southern Railroad where he was a Journeyman Carman. He traveled several states as "Wreck Master," overseeing the cleanup of train wrecks.
Other survivors include three daughters, Cheryl (Greg) Hover of Spencerville, Theresa (Allen) Whittington of Van Wert and Martha Stuck of Troy; two sons, Dana (Donita) Miller of Elida and Philip Miller of Spencerville; a brother, Rev. Lowell B. (Ruth) Miller of Spencerville; a sister, Vonnie McDorman of Clayton; 15 grandchildren, Aundrea (Rick) Good of Botkins, Jeremi (Shelly) Hover of Edison, Benjamin (Rachel) Hover of Philadelphia, Penn., Nandry and Janelle Hover, both of Spencerville, Donald (Karinda) Miller of Elida, Deanna (Denny) Purdy of Spencerville, Derek Miller of Elida, Brett and Emily Whittington of Van Wert, Kristina (Ty) Shellabarger of Brookville, Melissa and Bethany Stuck of Troy and Hope and Matthew Miller of Wapakoneta; and three great-grandchildren, Nathaniel and Hannah Good of Botkins and Abigail Purdy of Spencerville.
He was preceded in death by a son, Steven Miller; three brothers, Albert Miller who died in World War II, Harry Miller Jr. and infant Melvin Miller; and two sisters, Dorothy Thomas and Eloise Miller.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville, with the Rev. Kenneth W. Perdue officiating assisted by his nephew Dan Miller. Burial will be in the Mendon Cemetery, where graveside
military rites will be conducted by the Harry J.* Reynolds Post 191, American Legion and the Bowersock Bros. VFW Post 6772 both of Spencerville.
Calling hours are from 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Invincible Fire Company will conduct services at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to the Spencerville EMS or the Delphos Visiting Nurse and Hospice Program.
ROCKFORD - Berdine Lee Secaur
Died: Friday, November 30, 2001
Age: 80
ROCKFORD - Berdine Lee Secaur, 80, of Rockford died suddenly at her home.
She was born March 1, 1922 in Celina, the daughter of Arnold F. Pierstorff and Emma M. Silk Pierstorff.
She retired from Huffy's Corporation after 20 years of employment.
Survivors include:
Daughter -- Judy (Tom) Stephenson of Rockford
Sister -- Evelyn (Stanley) Hooks of Celina
Three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Ketcham-Ripley Funeral Home in Rockford, with Pastor Mike Berne officiating.
Calling hours are from 2 p.m. until the time of service Monday at the funeral home.
CONVOY - Donald E. Smith
Died: Thursday, November 14, 2002
Age: 77
CONVOY - Donald E. Smith, 77, of Convoy, formerly of Van Wert, died at 7:05 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at Convoy Care Center, Convoy.
He was born Oct. 15, 1925, in Cleveland, the son of the late Elmer and Della Pauline (Abel) Smith. On Oct. 18, 1946, in Bellefontaine, he married AnnaBell McNew, who survives in Convoy.
Mr. Smith was employed as a cable splicer for the former United Telephone Co. for 38 years. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he also served in the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Army.
He was affiliated with Trinity Friends Church, Van Wert, and was a member of the Ohio National Guard for many years. He was an active member of American Legion Post 178 in Van Wert and also the 40 et 8 of the Legion. He was also a member of VFW Post 5087 in Van Wert. For many years, he umpired softball games.
Other survivors include one daughter, Sheryl Height of Convoy; two sons, Jerry (Sandy) Smith and Neil Smith, both of Convoy; one brother, Alvin (Betty) Smith of Reynoldsburg; a sister, Marian Stanley of Bellefontaine, and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Delores Focht and Jocele Tussing and a son-in-law, Jack Height.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Brickner Funeral Home, the Rev. Neil Hammons officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert, with
military graveside service conducted by the combined honors unit of American Legion Post 178 and VFW Post 5807.
Calling hours are 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorial is Van Wert Community Health Professionals.
BELTON
Died: Wednesday, November 13, 2002
BELTON, S.C. - James Douglas"Jim" Johns, 60, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Van Wert, the son of the late Milford Gerald and Mary Beatrice (Sterling) Johns.
He married Audrey Bailey, who survives.
Mr. Johns was employed by Clarion in Anderson.

Daughters - Tammy Johnson of Fort Wayne, Ind., Justine Marie Johns of Miami, Okla.
Stepdaughaters - CherŽ Moules of Anderson, RenŽ Britt of Greenville
Brothers - Robert Johns of Ottawa and Roger Johns of Townville
Six grandchildren also survive.
Memorial services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Gray Mortuary Chapel, Pelzer, by the Rev. Mark Spearman.
The family members were at their respective homes and received friends from 2-3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service.
VENEDOCIA - James G. Hughs

Age: 84
VENEDOCIA - James G. Hughs, 84, of Venedocia died at 11:50 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center, Bluffton, Ind.
He was born Feb. 14, 1918, in Van Wert County, the son of the late Elmer James and Rachiel Ann (Cattell) Hughs. On Dec. 12, 1942, he married Lois Johnson, who survives at Van Wert Manor Nursing Home.
Mr. Hughs was a retired farmer. He had farmed in York Township for 77 years. He attended York High School.
He was a member of the Monticello United Brethren Church and the former Elgin United Brethren Church where he had held many various positions.
He was a former member of the Van Wert County Board of Elections and the Van Wert County Farm Bureau.
Other survivors include two daughters, Judy (Jack) Mauger of Warren, Ind., and Margaret Jane Hughs of Venedocia, two grandchildren, Thomas (Beverly) Mauger and Dea Mauger, and four great-grandchildren, Merscedes, Cheyenne, Presley and Reagan.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Evan Sylvester "Pete" Hughs and William Henry Hughs in infancy, and a sister, Margaret Elizabeth Rauch.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, the Revs. Carey G. Knittle and Andy Atkins officiating. Burial will be held at Goodwin Cemetery, York Township.
Calling hours are 2-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

PAYNE - Dorothy M. Mollet

Age: 97
PAYNE - Dorothy M. Mollet, 97, of Payne died at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at her residence.
She was born June 13, 1905, in Woodburn, Ind., the daughter of the late William and Ada (Sausser) Litzenberg.
Mrs. Mollet retired from General Electric in Fort Wayne in 1967.
Survivors include:
Daughters - Shirley (Edward) Hudson of Hamilton, Ind., Elaine (Maurice) Wannemacher of Payne and Betty (Gerald) Lord of Gas City, Ind.
Eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survive.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sandy Panico, four brothers, and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Payne Church of The Nazarene, Payne, the Rev. Michael Harper officiating. Burial will be in Lehman Cemetery, Payne.
Calling hours are after 3 p.m. Saturday at Slade Funeral Home, Payne.
PAULDING - Arthur Lee Sigley

Age: 66
PAULDING - Arthur Lee Sigley, 66, died at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at his Paulding residence.
He was born Sept. 27, 1936, the son of the late Earl Franklin and Mildred (Perkins) Sigley. On July 10, 1976, in Paulding, he married Marinell Wolfle, who survives.
He retired from Johns Manville as a machine chief after 41 years.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Lilly Mae Glover.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, the Rev. Jack Berry officiating. Burial will be held in St. Paul Cemetery, Paulding.
Calling hours are 2-9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home.
