Cora Mericle Maroney

Age: 90
LIMA — Cora Mericle Maroney, 90, of Lima died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at Shawnee Manor, Lima.
She was born Oct. 13, 1912, in Putnam County, the daughter of the late S. Edward and Elizabeth (Hunt) Good. She married William R. Mericle Sr., who preceded her in death in 1959. In 1965, she married Matthew Maroney, who also preceded her in death.
Prior to her retirement, she was the owner of a clock repair shop in Dayton, where she lived for many years. During World War II she was employed at the Lima Tank Depot.
Survivors include:
Daughters — Beverly (Dr. John) Carroll of Ft. Meyers, Fla., Elaine Hartman of Riverside, Calif., and Carol (Tony) Topp of Celina
Sister — Leota Hindenburg of Clovis, Calif.
Fifteen grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Mericle of Fort Jennings, and a special niece, Becky DeVelbiss, also survive.
She was preceded in death by a son, William R. Mericle Jr.; four brothers, Clarence, Ellis, David and Lewis Good; four sisters, Ada May, Edna Granger, Grace Good and Ruth DeVelbiss; a granddaughter, Patricia Mericle, and a grandson-in-law, Daniel Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Harter & Son Memorial Chapel, Delphos, the Rev. Larry Hopkins officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Delphos.
Calling hours are 2-4 p.m. Sunday and an hour prior to service on Monday at the funeral home.
Mary A. Sponseller
Died: Thursday, July 31, 2003
Age: 95
PAYNE — Mary A. Sponseller, 95, of Payne died at 6:50 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Paulding County Hospital, Paulding.
She was born Nov. 23, 1907, in Monroeville, Ind., the daughter of the late Homer and Minnie (Geyer) Casselman. Her husband Harold R. Sponseller preceded her in death in 1993.
Mrs. Sponseller was a homemaker.

Four grandchildren and a great-grandchild also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. (EDT) Monday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Payne, the Rev. Amy L. Haines officiating. Burial will be in Wiltsie Cemetery, Payne.
Calling hours are after 4 p.m. (EDT) Sunday at Slade Funeral Home, Payne.
Cynthia A. Bilimek
Died: Thursday, July 31, 2003
Age: 51
Cynthia A. Bilimek, 51, of Van Wert died at 11:06 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Van Wert County Hospital.
She was born March 10, 1952, in Lima, the daughter of Lee Kinstle, who survives in Van Wert, and the late Betty M. (Hedrick) Kinstle. On April 8, 1993, she married C. James Bilimek, who survives in Van Wert.
Mrs. Bilimek was a homemaker. A 1971 graduate of St. Joseph’s High School in Wapakoneta, she was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Van Wert.
Other survivors include four daughters, Emily M. Agler, Nikki L. Agler, Brittany E. Agler and Shelbi E. Bilimek, all of Van Wert; a sister, Diana "De De" (Larry) Greve of Van Wert; a granddaughter, Bailee G. Wallace of Van Wert; four nephews, Brian Greve of Van Wert, Scott Greve of Wapakoneta, Matt Greve of Cincinnati and Brad Greve of Van Wert; four great-nephews, and a great-niece.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Internment will be in Woodland Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at Brickner Funeral Home from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Monday with a parish wake service to be held at 8:45 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are American Cancer Society and Crisis Care Line.
Joan G. VanMetre

Age: 73
Joan G. VanMetre, 73, of Van Wert died at 11:10 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Van Wert County Hospital.
She was born Nov. 23, 1929, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of the late Charles and Gertrude (Taube) Cusmano.
Ms. VanMetre worked as a dispatcher for the Ohio State Highway Patrol Post in Van Wert for 24 years. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert, Van Wert American Legion Auxiliary and Van Wert Fraternal Order of Police.
Survivors include her children, Kenneth ( Lisa) Bridgman of Van Wert, Gordon S. (Cindy) VanMetre of Kent, Karen Bridgman of Van Wert, Debra (Jack) Harmon of Rushville, Ind., and Susan Leiendecker of Venedocia; 10 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Jerome Cusmano.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, Van Wert, the Rev. Charles Odinwa officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery.
Calling hours are 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorial is St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital.
Isaac Herb Zuercher

Age: 88
ASHLAND — Isaac Herb Zuercher, 88, of Ashland died at his residence Thursday afternoon, July 31, 2003.
He was born July 8, 1915, near Berne, Ind., the son of the late Albert S. and Verena Falb Zuercher. On July 16, 1939, he was married to Florine H. Zuercher, who survives him. They were married for 64 years in July of this year.
As a young man, he was employed as a cost accountant by V.C. Graber Poultry and Eggs of Berne, and later he was employed as an accountant for Fruehauf Trailer Company. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, but had been attending the Dickey Church of the Brethren since he moved to Ashland in 1996. He was a life member of Gideons International.
Other survivors include four sons, Herb (Alice) of Columbus, Ted of Cleveland, Ken (Shirley) of Fairfield and Tom (Susan) of Ashland; one daughter-in-law, Marge Zuercher of Canton; a sister, Metta Zuercher of Fort Wayne, Ind.; one foster brother, Don Miller of Tucson, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth and Helen, and three brothers, Enos, John and George.
Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Dickey Church of the Brethren, the Revs. Tom Zuercher, Durward Hays and Mark Moore officiating. Private burial will be in the Dickey Cemetery.
Calling hours are 3-5 p.m. Saturday in Denbow-Primm-Kemery Funeral Home, Ashland, and an hour prior to services Sunday at the church.
The family suggests that memorials in his memory may be made to Gideons International.
Linda L. Odenweller
Died: Thursday, July 31, 2003
Age: 60
DELPHOS — Linda L. Odenweller, 60, of Delphos died at 1:15 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.
She was born April 3, 1943, in Van Wert County, the daughter of the late William Dean and Alice L. (Mohler) Rice. On May 17, 2003, she married Joseph D. Odenweller, who survives at the residence.
Mrs. Odenweller had worked at Eaton Corp. in Van Wert for 18 years, Central Mutual Insurance Company in Van Wert and Mershman’s Brothers in Rockford. A 1961 graduate of Ohio City-Liberty High School, she was a member of Ohio City Church of God, presently attending St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos. She was also a member of Glass Society Corvette Association and Northwest Ohio Garden & Pond Society.
Other survivors include a daughter, Cheryl L. (Paul) Rutledge of Risingsun; two sons, Danny Plasterer and George Clarke, both of Toledo; four stepsons, Bruce (Jodi) Odenweller, Daryl Odenweller, Ryan Odenweller and Brent Odenweller, all of Delphos; three brothers, Charles D. Rice, Rodger D. (Barbara) Rice and Gary L. (Phyllis) Rice, all of Ohio City; two sisters, Ruth (James) Hill of Van Wert and Barbara (Kenneth) Hill of Fort Wayne, Ind.; three sisters-in-law, Elaine (Jim) Hogan of Curtice, Ellen (Jim) Gordon of Delphos and Ann Odenweller of Baton Rouge, La.; two brothers-in-law, Jerry (Sally) Bolenbaugh of Rockford and Don Jent of Ohio City; two grandchildren, Grant Rutledge and Adam Rutledge, both of Risingsun; two stepgrandchildren, Ian and Lindsey Odenweller, both of Delphos, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John Jay Rice, and two sisters, Marilyn Bolenbaugh and Joyce A. Jent.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert, the Revs. Brad Adams and Paul Rutledge officiating. Burial will be in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Cemetery, Delphos.
Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Preferred memorial is Ohio City EMS.
John L. Smith
Died: Saturday, September 27, 2003
Age: 79
CELINA — John L. Smith, 79, of Celina died at 12:57 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at W.H. Dick & Sons, Celina, the Rev. Robert Metheny Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Swamp College Cemetery, Celina, with
military graveside rites conducted by Celina Veterans of Foreign Wars.
