NORTH CANTON - Walsh University President Kenneth N. Hamilton Jr., 57, died Tuesday at his home in Lake Township.
A school official said he apparently had suffered a heart attack.
"It was totally a surprise, " university spokesman Richard Russell said yesterday. He said Hamilton had undergone outpatient surgery a week ago for an apparently unrelated problem and appeared to be doing well.
Hamilton became president of the Catholic liberal arts school in 1997. It has an enrollment of 1, 500 students.
Russell credited Hamilton with having a major impact on the school in the four years he was there. Faculty was strengthened and wireless communications were established, he said. The college also constructed two residence halls and a science-center addition and is building a student center. He said the school launched its largest fund-raising campaign last year.
Hamilton was vice president of academic affairs and chairman of the economics division at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., before he took the post at Walsh. He had been a professor of economics at West Liberty State College in West Virginia, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He had a master's from Ohio State University and a Ph.D. from West Virginia University. He served as an officer in the Navy from 1967 to 1969.
He was born in Miami, Fla.
Hamilton is survived by his wife, Peggy; a daughter, Laura of New York City; and a brother.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Catholic Church, 726 Cleveland Ave., N.W., Canton.
Memorial donations may be made to Walsh University Capital Campaign, 2020 Easton St., N.W., North Canton, Ohio 44720.
Arrangements are by Wackerly Funeral Home of Canton.
