Chester J. Hageman
October 14, 1914 - December 07, 2001
Birthplace: Lorain, Ohio
Resided In: Bay Village Ohio USA
Chester J. Hageman, 87 years old, a 49 year resident of Bay Village and recently of St. Paul Minnesota passed away December 7th. Chester was born in Lorain, Ohio and raised in Oberlin, Ohio. He graduated in 1936 from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio with a Bachelors Degree in business marketing. He was a member of the Alpha Chapter of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. A pre-Pearl Harbor Veteran, Staff Sergeant Chester J. Hageman, Medical Department, served during World War II in the 66th Armored Regiment of the 2nd Armored Division ('Hell on Wheels') in the U.S. Army for almost four years. He went from Casablanca, French Morocco to Berlin, Germany with the tank division. Chet was on the initial amphibious assualt landing in the Sicily invasion and D-5 in Normandy. He participated in all seven major campaigns (North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, North France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe). He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for commanding a medical half-track that provided close medical support during the entire mission clearing Kaldenhausen, Germany of enemy troops on 3 March, 1945. He disregarded his own safety, picked up all casualties, gave them immediate treatment, and evacuated them to the rear while under heavy enemy mortar barrage and machine gun cross fire. He also received the Belgian Fourragere and served six weeks as an exchange soldier with the British Army. Before his retirement in the late 1980's Chester worked as a food broker handling the restaurant trade in the Cleveland Area for the Carl H. Weber, Co. Prior to his service to his country, he met Hope Anita Steiner through his sister, Grace, both of whom worked at the Lorain Telephone Company. Hope and Chester became engaged while he was training at Fort Benning, Georgia and married
in January 1946. Their union led to the births of two daughters, Holly and Cindy. Chet was a very family-oriented man. His daughters remember him for the many evenings after dinner when he would play rummy with them, share a dish of ice cream, and then read a story or just talk to each of them as they drifted off to sleep. Each year he carefully planned a ten-day driving vacation or the family. These vacations covered the East Coast from Maine to South Carolina and went as far west as Wisconsin. He was well known in Bay Village in the 1950-60's for the best 4th of July fireworks backyard display before there were community fireworks. Chester was a member of Bay United Methodist Church. Surviving Chester are his two daughters Hollace Hageman and Cynthia Sargent, his one granddaughter, Jennifer Sargent and his sister Grace Hageman of Sarasota, Florida. His wife Hope A. Hageman (nee Steiner) and his parents Elmer and Marie G. (Peck) Hageman preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held on Thursday December 20th at 11:00am at Jenkins Funeral Chapel, 2914 Dover Center Road, Westlake, Ohio. The service will be conducted by Rev. Rollin Conway of Bay United Methodist Church. A private burial will be held a Brownhelm cemetery.
