Martha Metz
Died: Thursday, October 18, 2001

Martha Hazel Metz, 82, of Springfield died Thursday evening, October 18, 2001 in Mercy Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 11, 1918 in Champaign County, Ohio, the daughter of Abe and Mary (Barger) Johnson. Mrs. Metz graduated from Salem High School in 1938 and was owner and operator of Martha's Yarn House for 38 years. She was a member of the Mad River Embroiderer's Guild of America, the Dayton Knitting Guild, active in the Springfield Violet Club and The National Needlework Association. She was also a member of Omega Sigma Sorority and various other needlework associations.

Her survivors include her daughter, Cheryl Paxton of Huntsville, Ohio; son, Will Metz of Huntsville, Ohio; sister, Phyllis Wilkins of Mingo, Ohio; two granddaughters, Teresa and her spouse, Casey Matteson, Barbara Metz; one great-grandson, Andrew Metz; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Metz, Jr. in 1991; and three sisters, Ethel Smith, Myrtle Powell, and Ruth Johnson.

A gathering of family and friends will be held in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME, Springfield, Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.

Funeral services will be held in the funeral home Monday at 1 p.m. with Rev. Fred Clogg officiating. Burial will be in Ferncliff cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Embroiderer's Guild of America, 335 W. Broadway, Suite 100, Louisville, Kentucky 40202 or the charity of the donor's choice.

Betty Singleton
Died: Thursday, October 18, 2001

Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. in the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME for Betty L. Singleton, 81, who died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, in The Wellington. Rev. Clara Boyd Williams officiated and burial was in Oak Dale cemetery, Urbana, Ohio. Pallbearers were Wendell Hill Jr., Lonnie Givens, Micah Honore, Richard P. Smith II, William A. Grinter and Roussel Jackson.

Jacqueline Thomas
Died: Saturday, February 2, 2002

Jacqueline R. Thomas, 49, of Springfield, died in Mercy Medical Center on Saturday, February 2, 2002, following a brief illness. She was born in Clark County on November 4, 1952, the daughter of Lloyd and Norma (Spickity) Clapp. Jacqueline was a 1970 graduate of Shawnee High School and a die-hard Cleveland Browns fan.

She is survived by her husband Kevin L. Thomas; one daughter, Amy N. Steinhauer and her fiance Rodney Sanders, of Springfield; one son, Steven L. Warren; one sister and brother-in-law, Kathy L. Brittin, of Springfield; two brothers, Steven Clark of Orlando, Fla. and Gary Clapp of Springfield; three grandchildren, Aaron J. D. Steinhauer, Mickaela L. N. Steinhauer and Ryan E. Sanders; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Friends my call on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. in the RICHARDS, RAFF AND DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. in the Memorial Home. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery.

Gladys Davis
Died: Thursday, January 31, 2002

Gladys Davis, 92, formerly of Celina, died at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2002, at her daughter's home in Urbana, Ohio, where she had resided for 14 years.

She was born on Dec. 17, 1909, in Maywood, Ill., to Albert and Alma (Haker) Nieman.

She was married to Ervin S. Davis on Nov. 10, 1932. He died on Dec. 12, 1975.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by one son, Stan (and Nancy) Davis, of St. Marys, Ohio; two daughters, Carol (and Mike) Detrick, of Urbana, Ohio, and Judy Davis, of Celina; two sisters, Edythe Brooks, of Santa Clara, Calif., and Eleanore Finkbeiner, of LaGrange, Ill.; four grandchildren, Chris (and Coy) Boroff, Mark (and Shelly) Davis, Todd (and Cathy) Detrick and Jim Detrick; eight great-grandchildren; and special friend and caregiver, Sharon (and Ricky) Shumaker, of Springfield, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacquelyn Joyce Davis; three sisters, Dorothy Fike, Kay Ross and Arlene Brooks; four brothers, Ed, Irving, Herb and Willis Nieman.

A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3 at the W.H. Dick & Sons Funeral Home, Celina, with Rev. Norman Wright officiating. Burial will be in State Line cemetery, Washington Township, Mercer County. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 at the W.H. Dick & Sons Funeral Home, Celina, Ohio.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice, Urbana.

James Harmon
Died: Thursday, March 14, 2002

James Harmon, age 56, of 8490 Snapp Road, St. Paris, Ohio died Monday, March 11, 2002 at 11:55 p.m. in his residence.

He was born in Springfield, Ohio on Sept. 19, 1945 to Rev. Ralph "Dutch" and Maxine (Gribble) Harmon. He was an English and Social Studies teacher at West Liberty-Salem and Marysville Middle Schools for 30 years.

He is survived by his wife, Kristen (Evringham) Harmon of St. Paris; mother, Maxine Atha of Bellefontaine; brothers, Richard (Nancy) Harmon of Bellefontaine, Mark (Patti) Harmon of West Liberty; sister Jackie (Jim) Markin of Urbana, Ohio; step-sons Chad Burroughs, Ty (Becky) Burroughs, Andy (Angie) Burroughs, all of St. Paris; grandchildren Logan and Ryan Burroughs.

He was preceded in death by his father and sister, Deborah Brown.

He received a bachelor of science from Urbana University and a master's degree from Ohio State University.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2002 in the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, A Dignity Memorial Provider, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, Ohio where a funeral service will be held on Friday, March 15, at 10 a.m. with Rev. William Turner officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove cemetery, St. Paris, Ohio.

James Clifford
Died: Wednesday, March 13, 2002

James K. Clifford, 82, of Urbana, formerly of Marysville, died March 13, 2002, at the McAuley Center, in Urbana.

He was retired after 34 years from the Marysville post office; many of those years were spent serving as window clerk. Good service to the public was his forte. He was co-owner of Dee's Gems along with his wife and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, in Marysville. James was a Navy veteran of WWII. He was an avid sailor and enjoyed fishing, traveling, nature, being out of doors, bird watching and took great pride in caring for his lawn and vegetable garden. He also enjoyed many sports, especially basketball. One of his fondest memories was playing "Forward" in the 1936-37 season, which was the only boys basketball team at Union Rural High School in Milford Center to ever win a state championship. After high school, he played with a local team called the TIGERS, who were considered good competition for the best basketball players in the area.

He was a loving husband, father and treasured his grandchildren. He was born Feb. 18, 1920, in Milford Center, to the late John I. and Bertha Reed Clifford and was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Maynard, a brother, Paul Reed Clifford, and a sister, Mary D. Mercer.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, the former Doris "Dee" Lee; three daughters, Carol (Edward) Griffith, Nancy (Bill) Neely, of Marysville, and Barbara (Joe) Mlcuch, of Miami, Fla.; stepdaughter, Shari (Tom) Teutsch, of Omaha, Neb.; stepson, John (Anne) Hahn, of Urbana; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, nine stepgrandchildren; and two nieces.

Calling hours will be at the INGRAM FUNERAL HOME, Marysville, Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. The Revs. Renee Ahern and Larry Donner will officiate, with burial following at the Milford Center cemetery. The Union County Honor will provide full military honors at the cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home.

Marvin Bowen
Died: Tuesday, March 12, 2002

Marvin Bowen, 72, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Mt. Carmel Medical Center.

Charter member of Grove City Church of the Nazarene since 1961, where he was active in many areas of the church, veteran of the Korean War era, retired from Cantwell Machinery Co. after 32 years of dedicated service.

Preceded in death by parents, Charles and Viola Bowen, brothers, Hobart and Everett Bowen, two sisters, Opal and Neva Bowen, brothers-in-law, Charles (Edna) Hinkle and Harold Hinkle.

Survived by wife, Wilda Bowen, daughter, Angie (Mike) Bailey, granddaughter, Makayla Anne Hicks, grandson, Austin Michael Hicks, sister, Verna Muncy, brother, Willis (Ann) Bowen, sisters-in-law, Magdalene (Ern) Kennedy, Bonnie (Roger) Horn and Freda Hinkle and Carmen Bowen Harless, brothers-in-law, Bob (Maggie) Hinkle and Joe (Sharon) Hinkle, many nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends.

Family will receive friends Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Grove City Church of the Nazarene Activity Center, 4770 Hoover Road, Grove City, where the funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Worship Center, with Pastors Owen Stotts, Bob Huffaker and Ralph Perdew officiating. Interment will be in Concord cemetery. Honor Guard services by American Legion Post 144. Pall bearers will be Jim Swart, Leo Baugess, John Cordle, Jeff Thornton, Ron Huffman and Joe Hinkle. Arrangements under the care of MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 875-4878. Flowers should be delivered to the Grove City Church of the Nazarene.

Hazel Newman
Died: Tuesday, March 12, 2002

Hazel F. Organ Newman, 92, of Marysville, formerly of North Lewisburg, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Heartland of Marysville, where she resided for two years.

She was a former waitress for Ewing's Restaurant and Billie's Truck Stop, in Urbana, and was a former member of the Women of the Moose, Marysville Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 1651 and Eagles Auxiliary Aerie No. 3506. Throughout her life, she enjoyed quilting and traveling. She was an accomplished pianist and organist, having never taken lessons.

She was born July 4, 1909, in Kennard, Ohio, one of six children, to the late Samuel E. and Viola Shull Martin. She was raised on the family farm near North Lewisburg.

She is survived by six daughters, Eleanor Black and Maxine (Charles) Murphy, both of Marysville, Virginia (Philip) Black, of Springfield, Charlene (Paul) Page, of Colorado, Marilyn Daniels, of Marion, and Lois Feasel, of Delaware; a son, Frederick (Marilyn) Organ, of Urbana; 24 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, 20 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Mt. Carmel cemetery, in Champaign County. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at UNDERWOOD FUNERAL HOME, 703 E. Fifth St., Marysville.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heartland of Marysville, either directly at 755 S. Plum St., Marysville, Ohio 43040, or in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.underwoodfuneralhome.com

Leona Higbee Higbee
Died: Saturday, March 9, 2002

Leona B. Higbee, 81, of 232 Boyce St., Urbana, died Saturday March 9, 2002 in Community Hospital in Springfield, at 7:45 p.m. She was born on Aug. 21, 1922 in Logan County, to Gottleib and Maude (Stemble) Siegenthaler. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, David Higbee. Children; Pat (Bernie) Ranney of Columbus, Kay (Bruce) Lium of Hailey, Idaho, Sue (Randy) Poe of Urbana. Grandchildren; Mark (Sue) Ranney, Carol (Lee) Hopkins, Rebecca (Dustin) Rowland. Great-Grandchildren; Brandon Ranney, Christina Hopkins, Collin Rowland and Amber Ranney. Sister, Ruth Birt of Springfield. Preceded in death by brothers, Wilbur and Gilbert Siegenthaler and sisters, Margaret Birt and Minnie Watson. She was a member to the Urbana Free Methodist Church and Women of the Moose Chapter 429. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday March 12, 2002 in the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, a Dignity Memorial Provider, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, with Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating. Moose Chapter 429 service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, in the funeral home. Dakota Longwell
Died: Saturday, March 9, 2002

Dakota Jean Legge Longwell, the infant daughter of Robert Longwell and Emanuela Ann Legge passed away March 9, 2002 in Mary Rutan Hospital. She is survived by her parents, Maternal Grandparents; Theresa and Russell Legge of Urbana, Paternal Grandparents; Kitty and Mark Stanley of West Liberty and Robert and Gretta Longwell of Otway. Maternal Great-Grandparents; Robert and Emma Holbrook of Urbana. Paternal Great-Grandparents; Everett R. Reed of West Liberty and Elman and Thelma Kelley of Woodstock. Aunts and uncles; Amy and Doug Metz of Urbana, Shawn and Tammy Longwell of Woodstock, Danielle Longwell and Jessica Stanley both of West Liberty and Mark Stanley Jr. of Bellefontaine. Two cousins; Kayleigh and Kyndall Metz both of Urbana. She was preceded in death by Paternal Great-Grandmother; Mable E. Reed and Maternal Great-Grandparents; Milton and Nellie Legge. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday March 11, 2002 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the LITTLETON AND RUE FUNERAL HOME, Highland Chapel, West Liberty, where funeral services will follow at 4:30 p.m. with Pastors Abraham Kenner and Charles Runion officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial cemetery, West Liberty. Following the services the family will receive friends at the Metz residence, 669 Sonander Road, Urbana. Judy Sneary
Died: Thursday, October 18, 2001

Judy Davis Nichols Sneary, 63, of Lakeview, died Thursday morning, October 18, 2001 in Mary Rutan Hospital.

She was born April 17, 1938 in Urbana, Ohio the daughter of Emmett and Mary (Junken) Davis. Judy was a member of the Indian Eagles Women's Chapter Post 3615, Moose Lodge Chapter 452 and was employed for many years by Grimes Manufacturing. She loved boating and fishing with her family and spending as much time as possible with her beloved dog "Elvis."

Her survivors include her second husband, John Sneary of Lakeview; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Douglas "Tank" Nichols and special friend Susie Pullins, Dwight E. and Lora Nichols, all of Urbana; one brother and sister-in-law, Ned R. and Delores Davis of Urbana; two step-daughters and sons-in-law, Reva and Jim Leach of Lima, Mary and Fran Martin of Florida; two step-sons, Terry Sneary of Lima, Mike Sneary of Lima; grandchildren, Megan, Morgan, Niki, Kyle and Kevin; many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Garland C. Nichols; one son, Dirk Allen Nichols; two sisters, Virginia Reisinger and Nancy Young; and one brother, Max Davis.

A gathering of family and friends will be held in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME, Urbana, Monday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held in the funeral home Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Jim Leach officiating. Burial will be in Oak Dale cemetery.

Richard Deer
Died: Wednesday, October 17, 2001

Richard G. Deer, 79, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, died Oct. 17, 2001, in Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. A gathering of family and friends will be held in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME, Highland Chapel, West Liberty, Ohio, from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001. Graveside services will be held in the Highland Memorial cemetery at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Bonnie Edwards
Died: Wednesday, October 17, 2001

Bonnie Jo Edwards, 55, of Mechanicsburg, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, in Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus.

She was born Sept. 4, 1946, in Fayette County, the daughter of the late Willis and Janie Fraley Hayes.

Bonnie was a homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include husband, Jimmy L. Edwards, whom she married May 29, 1965, in Urbana; son, John Edwards and wife Marilyn, of Mechanicsburg, daughter, Janie Edwards and Chriss, of North Ft. Myers, Fla., Shelly Edwards and Ron, of Bellefontaine, Patty Trowbridge and husband Jeff, of Marysville, grandchildren, Crystal, Donnie, Corey, Marvin, Brandon, Samantha, Justin and Trent, four brothers, Roger (Sandy) Hayes, David (Paula) Hayes, Charles (Joy) Hayes and Billy Hayes, sister, Katie Cowgil.

Preceded in death by parents and a sister, Rosie Angle.

Funeral service at 10 a.m. Monday in the SKILLMAN-MCDONALD FUNERAL HOME, Mechanicsburg, where family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Arthur Stokes

Arthur Stokes, 45, of Urbana, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, in OSU Medical Center, Columbus, Ohio. Arrangements are pending at the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, A Dignity Memorial Provider, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, Ohio.

Richard Griest
Died: Monday, October 15, 2001

Richard L. Griest, 58, of Springfield, Ohio, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, in his residence.

He was born May 30, 1943, in Clark County, Ohio, the son of Gerald and Hazel (Suver) Griest.

He was a graduate of Tecumseh High School in 1961. Member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he held many offices and was a member of the choir and men's quartet. He served as a coach and little league baseball commissioner of New Carlisle during the 1960s. He was an avid softball player and coach in the Springfield area. He was actively involved in the Clark County Fair and served on the fair board and sheep committee and was an adviser for the Clark County Junior Fair Board. Dick was an employee of Stull Implement Company in New Carlisle and a local farmer.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Carolyn (Meyer) Griest; two daughters, Krissie (Mike) Mastin and Kelley (Jason) Berner, of Springfield; six grandchildren, Wade, Clay and Kylee Mastin and Layne, Kinley and Gatlyn Berner; sister, Lois (Bill) Rush, of Kettering; sister-in-law, Barbara Griest, of New Carlisle; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by mother, Hazel (Suver) Griest; father, Gerald Griest; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Jim McGowan; brother, Bob Griest.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at the Bethel Baptist Church, 6370 New Carlisle Pike, Springfield, Ohio, with Pastor Randy Warner and Rev. James Skedel officiating. Burial in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Bethel Baptist Church. Arrangements by the TROSTEL CHAPMAN & CHRISTMAS FUNERAL HOME, New Carlisle, Ohio.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
