Lester Strickler
Died: Wednesday, June 27, 2001
Lester E. Strickler, 79, of Urbana, passed away Friday, May 25, 2001, at home after a brief illness.
He was born June 27, 1921, in Findlay, the son of Roy R. and Ruth M. (Trostle) Strickler.
He was a graduate of Findlay College and Wittenberg University and was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army Air Corps from 1942-1946.
Les served as a teacher and elementary school principal in Delphos and Urbana for 39 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Harmony Lodge No. 8 F&AM;, Rotary, Urbana Senior Citizen Center, and the Urbana United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Audrey (Johnson) Strickler of Urbana, whom he married
Sept. 15, 1946; daughter and son-in-law Jane and Tim Tye of Centerville; son and daughter-in-law David and Jane Strickler of Rock Island, Ill., and four grandchildren.
Funeral services are pending at the convenience of the family.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 12, at 1 p.m. in the Urbana United Methodist Church with the Rev. Norman Wright officiating.
Memorial contributions can be made in Lester's memory to the Senior Citizen Center at the corner of South Walnut and Thompson streets in Urbana. The family extends a special thanks to Mercy Hospice for making Les's last days comfortable and peaceful.
Arrangements are being handled by the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main St., Urbana.
Janet Johnston
Died: Tuesday, June 26, 2001
Janet E. Johnston, 53, of Urbana, passed away June 16, 2001, in her home. Memorial services will be held at New Hope Mission Church, 214 N. Locust St., at 6 p.m. June 30, 2001. There will be services and a reception following.
Christena Riggle
Died: Tuesday, June 26, 2001
Christena Riggle, 93, of 4655 S. Arba Pike, Union City, died at her home Tuesday, June 26, 2001.
She was born in Greens Fork on Sept. 12, 1907, the daughter of Adam and Jesse Earla Oler Souther.
She lived most of her life in the Greens Fork and Economy area and had resided in the Spartanburg area for the past 15 years. She was a member of the Sugar Grove Community Church. She was a loving and faithful homemaker.
She is survived by one son, Walt Riggle, of Urbana, Ohio; two daughters, Mary Lou Riggle, of Costa Rica, Alice Louise Thompson, of Bellmore, Ind.; one brother, Dwight Souther, of Fountain City; six grandchildren and four great-grandsons.
Her husband, Glen Riggle, preceded her to heaven on April 22, 2001.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 29 in CULBERSON FUNERAL HOME, Hagerstown, with Rev. Howard Addison officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Grove cemetery, near Greens Fork. Visitation will be after noon Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sugar Grove Youth Scholarship Fund through the funeral home.
Shirley Sprinkle
Died: Tuesday, June 26, 2001
Shirley A. Sprinkle, 59, of North Lewisburg, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2001, in Ohio State University Hospital.
She was born Dec. 9, 1941, in Clark County to the late Jack Bowman and Hannah (Knisley) Stocker, of Circleville.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Gene Sprinkle, of North Lewisburg, whom she married
May 27, 1960; a son, Donald J. (Lena) Sprinkle, of Seattle, Wash.; a sister, Mary Luckhart; a brother, Robert Bowman; and a grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her father; a sister, Pamela Stocker; and a brother, Jack Bowman Jr.
Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2001, in FRESHWATER-MCDONALD FUNERAL HOME, North Lewisburg, with Pastor Ralph Hucks officiating. Burail will follow the servcie in Maple Grove cemetery, North Lewisburg. Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
Roberta Cordell
Died: Monday, June 25, 2001
Roberta A. Cordell, 72, of Marysville, passed away Monday, June 25, 2001, in Mt. Carmel Medical Center, Columbus.
She was born Jan. 15, 1929, in Clark County.
Roberta was a homemaker. She retired as the bookkeeper for Cordell Construction, of Marysville, and had attended the Mechanicsburg Oak Grove Church of Christ in Christian Union. Roberta loved country music, to travel (especially Hawaii), to cook for family and to sew. Every Saturday got to be known as "Grandma Night." All her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren would gather for her great food.
Survivors include her husband, Frank Cordell Jr., whom she married
July 2, 1945; mother, Marcella Milledge Wood; son, Barry (Susan) Cordell; four daughters, Sheryl (James) Cox, Billie Jo Denty, all of Marysville, Diana Bryant, of Delaware, Karen Rush, of London; 10 grandchildren, Robert (Lisa) Cordell, Paul (Kathy) Cordell, Kevin (Lara) Cordell, Roberta Cox, Jamie (Chris) Rausch, Donna Bryant, Brenda Bryant, Brad (Daphne) Denty, Tracie Denty, Heather Rush; five great-grandchildren; brother, Marvin (Joanne) Wood, of Lake Wales, Fla.
Preceded in death by her father, Robert Wood.
Funeral service at 10 a.m. Friday in the SKILLMAN-MCDONALD FUNERAL HOME, Mechanicsburg, with Rev. Kelly Grimmett officiating. Burial will follow in Our Lady of Lourdes cemetery, Marysville. Family and friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mechanicsburg Oak Grove Church of Christ in Christian Union. Pallbearers who will serve: Robert, Paul and Kevin Cordell, Chris Rausch, Doug Kensinger and Brad Denty.
William Dolby Sr.
Died: Monday, June 25, 2001
William D. Dolby Sr., 85, was born April 18, 1916 in Proctorville, Ohio and was the son of the late Nathaniel and Annie Gomer Dolby. Mr. Dolby departed his life on Thursday, June 28, 2001 at 3 p.m. at the McAuley Nursing Home following a short-term illness.
Mr. Dolby was married
to Josephine R. (Waugh) Dolby and lived in Urbana, Ohio for 65 years. His wife, parents and three sisters, Mildred Steward, Carrie King and Emma Hopkins, preceded him in death.
He leaves to mourn and cherish his memory two sisters, Violet Gilliam, Gary, West Virginia, and Louise (William) Larry of Bluefield, West Virginia; two sons, William D. (Angie) Dolby Jr., Urbana, Ohio, and Bryan K. (Carla) Dolby, London, Ohio; two daughters, Clarice E. (Ervin) Hurd, Las Vegas, Nev., and Ava M. (Curtis) Cabbell, Urbana, Ohio; three step-children, Allen G. (Flora) Nash, Mililani, Hawaii, David W. (Marcia) Nash, Urbana, Ohio and Beverly R. Williams, Las Vegas, Nev. He had 15 grandchildren: Heather Cabbell, Garrett Dolby, Sommer and Madison Dolby, Tara Dolby, Randy Scurry, David Allen and Cicely Nash, Malikkah, Kyani and Kamilah Nash, Karen Gaddis, Robert, Michael and Gregory Williams and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends Joseph and Anita Gardner and daughter Amica.
His loving family and friends will sadly Mr. Dolby.
Entombment will be at the convenience of the family in the Oak Dale cemetery.

Marilynn Bodey
Died: Sunday, June 24, 2001
Marilyn J. Bodey, 67, of Urbana, Ohio, died on Sunday, June 24, 2001, in her residence.
She was born on June 22, 1934, in Springfield, Ohio. She was the daughter of Garnard L. and Dorothy (Apple) Zerkle.
She attended the River of Life Church and the Nazarene Church.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Russell E. Bodey; daughter, Gloria J. and Brack Houchens, of Gallipolis, Ohio; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Gary R. and Vicki L. Bodey, of Welston, Ohio, and Brian Paul Bodey; grandchildren, Jacob, Rebecca, Jason, Rosemary, Laura Joshua, triplets include Dorothy, Perry and Tyson, Hannah, Landon and Levi; several nieces and nephews; and a host of special friends, including Kelly Ruch, Joan Barthauer, Susan Oelker and Lynn Goforth.
Marilyn was very active until her death and loved spending time with her grandchildren.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday, June 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME, Urbana. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 28 at 11 a.m., with Pastor Daniel R. Leiker officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial cemetery.

Hazel Evans
Died: Tuesday, October 9, 2001
Hazel L. Evans, 73, of DeGraff, Ohio died at 1 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001 in her residence.
She was born Dec. 8, 1927 in Shelby County, Ohio, the daughter of Henry and Henrietta (Schemmel) Weiskittel, both deceased. She was a 1946 graduate of Holy Angels High School in Sidney, Ohio, was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sidney, Ohio and was a member of the Shelby County Farm Bureau.
She is survived by her husband, Donald H. Evans, whom she married
on April 6, 1948; one son, Harold (Jane) Evans of DeGraff; four daughters, JoAnn (Terry) Griest of Urbana, Peggy (Storm) Sells of Saint Paris, Donna (Tom) Maloney of Columbus, and Lila (Garry) Millhoff of Edinburg, Illnois; 10 grandchildren, Michael Griest of Springfield, Jennifer Griest of Toledo, Jeff (Tammy) Sells of Rosewood, Brian (Michelle) Sells and Tony Sells, both of Saint Paris, Jody Evans and Kelley Evans, both of Atlanta, Georgia, Vincent Millhoff and Tempi Millhoff, both of Edinburg, Illinois, and Shawnda Millhoff of Columbus; two great-grandchildren, Ron Perrier of Rosewood and Evan Sells of Saint Paris; two brothers, Donald Weiskittel and Edward Weiskittel, both of Port Jefferson; three sisters, Ethel Bush of Sidney, Joan Miller of Leesburg, Florida and Margaret Goffena of Urbana.
She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Walter, Adolf, Louis, Charles, Roy and Hugh Weiskittel; one sister, Jane Hall.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Oct. 12, 2001 at 11 a.m. graveside at Rosedale cemetery, North State Route 235, Conover, Ohio with the Rev. William Turner officiating. There will be no visitation.

William Mott
Died: Tuesday, October 9, 2001
William (Bill) Bernard Mott, 89, of Urbana, Ohio, died at 8:22 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at the home of his daughter, Barbara Godwin.
He was born in Urbana on Oct. 19, 1911, to Mary (Sticksel) Mott and George P. Mott and is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Norbert, George, Louis and Charles; daughter-in-law, Virginia (Meddles) Mott; and son-in-law and special friend, Floyd Godwin.
Bill attended St. Mary School in Urbana, where he graduated in 1929. He owned and operated Mott's Grocery #1 on North Russell Street for many years. The original grocery was opened by his father around 1900. Bill retired from the grocery business in 1972. He then worked as office manager at the dental office of his son, Louis Mott, in London, Ohio, from 1972 to 1975.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marcella R. (McLaughlin) Mott, who he married
on Oct. 26, 1932. He is also survived by his sister, Mary (Mott) Nigh, of Urbana. Bill and Marcella have five children, daughters, Barbara Godwin, of Urbana, and Joyce (Craig) McConnaughey, of Alamo, Calif.; sons, William B. Mott Jr. (Fran), of Medway, Ohio, Louis Mott, DDS, of London, Ohio, and Robert Mott (Marge), of Dayton, Ohio. Twenty-five grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren also survive him.
He has been a lifelong member of St. Mary Parish, in Urbana, where he served as a lector and Eucharistic minister. Bill also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he served as past Grand Knight and was selected as Knight of the Year. He enjoyed traveling and winters in Florida, where he attended St. Anne's Church, in Ruskin, and served daily Mass for 26 years.
Visitation will be held at the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, A Dignity Memorial Provider, 642 S. Main St., in Urbana, Ohio, from 3 to 5 and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, 2001. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Church, 228 Washington Ave., in Urbana, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001. Burial will be in Oak Dale cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospital Hospice of Springfield; the Cancer Society of Champaign County; or St. Mary Catholic Church, in Urbana.
Melvin Stokes
Died: Tuesday, October 9, 2001
Melvin "Gene" Stokes, 68, of Urbana, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, in his residence.
He was born on March 16, 1933, in Urbana, the son of Arthur and Audrey (Geuy) Stokes.
Gene served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and retired from Grimes Manufacturing after 37 years of service. He was a member of the Moose Lodge 1215, the American Legion Pearce-Kerns Post 120, the AMVETS Post 121 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5451. He was avidly involved in fund-raising for all of the clubs in which he belonged. He also was inducted into the Urbana Parks and Recreation Hall of Fame and was a follower of Urbana High School Football.
Survivors include one daughter, Pamela (Stokes) Litreal, of Urbana; two sons, Michael Gene Stokes, of Urbana, and David Arthur and Laura Stokes, of Urbana; two sisters, Lora Tobias, of Mechanicsburg, and Patricia and Bob Young, of Urbana; four brothers, Wendel and Betty Stokes, of Springfield, Marion and Winnie Stokes, of Urbana, Loren and Mildred Stokes, of Urbana, and Roger and Marge Stokes, of Urbana; four grandchildren, Matthew Gene Stokes, Amber Grim, Hayli Litreal and Tori Litreal; two great-grandchildren, Jackson Litreal and Maginta Grim; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Erma Stokes; and three brothers, Howard Stokes, Arthur Stokes Jr. and Frank Dutton.
A gathering of family and friends will be held in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME, Urbana, on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Clifford Kissinger officiating. Burial will be in Oak Dale cemetery, in Urbana.
Rev. Harvey Taylor
Died: Tuesday, October 9, 2001
The Rev. Harvey O. Taylor, 80, of Otterbein-Lebanon Retirement Community, Lebanon, Ohio, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001.
He was born April 3, 1921, in Mosiertown, Pa., the son of Walter C. and Mabel (Finch) Taylor.
The Rev. Taylor was a graduate of Chautauqua Central School, Chautauqua, N.Y. He served in the United States Army during World War II with the 90th Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron Mechanized 10th Armored Division in the European Theater. He entered the ministry from Hurlbut Memorial Community United Methodist Church, Chautauqua, N.Y. He received his Associate Degree at Jamestown Community College, Jamestown, N.Y., his Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of New York at Fredonia, Fredonia, N.Y., and his Master of Divinity from The Methodist Theological School of Ohio, Delaware, Ohio.
Rev. Taylor was ordained an Elder in the United Methodist Church in June of 1963. Extended seminary studies were done at The Royal Holloway College, Englefield Green, England. He served churches in the Western New York, Western Pennsylvania, and Ohio West Conferences for the United Methodist Church. He was a clergyman for the United Methodist Church for 30 years, retiring July 1, 1986. He served churches in Jamestown/Gerry, N.Y., South Vienna/Brighton, Ohio, Little Valley/Napoli, N.Y., Brockport, N.Y., Lancaster, N.Y. and Fredonia, N.Y.
Rev. Taylor served on numerous United Methodist Conference Committees, including the Ministerial Qualifications Committee. He served on the Board for The United Methodist House, Chautauqua, N.Y., for many years and was a member of the Stedman Grange.
His survivors include his wife, Elsie (Johnson) Taylor, whom he married
Feb. 7, 1944, in Jamestown, N.Y.; one daughter, Lucinda Griffith Clay of West Chester, Ohio; two grandchildren, Christopher (Elizabeth) Griffith of Dayton, Ohio, and Michelle (Scott) Griffith Swinney of Charlotte, N.C. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, from 3 to 7 p.m. in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME, Springfield.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Otterbein-Lebanon Retirement Community, 585 State Route 741, Lebanon, Ohio. An additional memorial service will be held at the Hurlbut Memorial Community United Methodist Church on Oct. 21, 2001, at 3 p.m. with burial at Maple Grove cemetery, Ashville, N.Y.
