Verna W. "Janie" Cook, 88, of Lawrenceville died Wednesday, April 25, 2001.

Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. June 2, 2001 at Mendon-Union cemetery, Mendon, Ohio.

A native of Mercer County, Ohio, Mrs. Cook was a public school cafeteria manager.

She was preceded in death by her husband Paul A. Cook, grandson Chris Cook and granddaughter Tracey Cook.

She is survived by sons and daughtes-in-law, Jack and Dorothy Cook of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Gary and Sue Cook of Hilliard, Ohio; grandchildren Carey J. Cook, Stacy C. Lacy, Tammy Immell, Terry Szlag; sister Eunice Krumlauf of Columbus, Ohio; and eight great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are being handled by TIM STEWART FUNERAL HOME, Lawrenceville, (770) 962-3100.

Alice Tangeman
Died: Wednesday, April 25, 2001

Alice O. Tangeman, 86, of 10 B Defiance Commons, Wapakoneta, Ohio, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at 10:33 p.m. at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys, Ohio. Funeral services will be on Monday, April 30 at 10:30 a.m. at GILBERG-HARTWIG FUNERAL HOME, New Bremen. Calling hours will be on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the German Protestant cemetery, New Bremen. Memorial contributions can be made to the New Bremen Emergency Squad.

Lusean Blosser
Died: Tuesday, April 24, 2001

Lusean (Bill) C. Blosser, 81, passed away on April 24, 2001.

He is survived by two sisters and one brother, Katherine Bailey, Margaret Edinger and Lester Blosser; two children, Jerry Blosser and Suzanne M. Yates; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two daughters and two sons.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, Urbana.

Jean Hornbeck

Jean Hornbeck, 76, of Springfield, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at her residence. A gathering of family and friends will be held in LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Memorial services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Mark United Methodist Church, 2043 Memorial Drive, Springfield. Burial will be in Paint Township cemetery, London, Ohio.

Mary Waldren
Died: Tuesday, April 24, 2001

Mary L. Waldren, 84, of Springfield, Ohio, and formerly of Urbana, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at 2 p.m. in St. John Nursing Center, Springfield, Ohio.

She was born Feb. 28, 1917, in North Lewisburg, Ohio, to Mason and Ethel Martin.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her children, Charles Waldren Sr., of Urbana, James (Susan) Waldren, of Springfield; grandchildren, Hope Ramsini, Holly Waldren and Charles Waldren Jr., Kim Smith, Todd Heck, Amy Knotts, Emily Waldren, Jolynn Waldren; great-grandchildren, John Chatwood, Lyle Hall, Grace Knotts, Jesse Waldren, Renata and Larsa Ramsini.

Preceded in death by parents; husband, Don J. Waldren, Aug. 17, 1967; six sisters; and a daughter, Nancy Heck, on Feb. 21, 1993.

A private memorial service was held at WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, Ohio.

Robert King
Died: Monday, April 23, 2001

Funeral services were held Monday, April 23, 2001, at 1 p.m. in the Walter-Schoedinger Funeral Home for Robert R. King, 74, who died Friday, April 20, 2001, at 517 Gwynne St., Urbana, Ohio. Rev. Clifford Kissinger and Rev. Stanley Cover officiated and burial was in Oak Dale cemetery. Pallbearers were Richard L. King, James Allison, Mark D. Ewing, Ben Weaver, Bob Wellman and Bill Weaver. Honorary pallbearers were Andrew M. King and Bill King.

Evelyn Leffel
Died: Monday, April 23, 2001

Evelyn M. (Ferryman, Gatten) Leffel, 83, of Springfield, died Monday evening, April 23, 2001, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 17, 1917, in Champaign County, the daughter of Kenton and Margaret (Wilkins) Ferryman.

She graduated from Champaign County School of Nursing and worked for many years there and at Mercy Hospital in Springfield and spent her last working years at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana.

Survivors include her husband of 30 years, Victor J. Leffel; three children, Judith and (Kenneth) Melvin, Michael and (Cindy) Gatten and Susan Gatten and husband James Burns, all of Springfield, Ohio; one stepchild, Vicki (Dave) North, of Springfield, Ohio; six grandchildren, Melissa (Keith) Fugate, Kenneth Gatten, Shawn (Tracy) Gatten, Allyson McDuffie, Andrew McDuffie and David (Simone) McDuffie; three stepgrandchildren, Robbie (Kathy) North, Douglas (Diana) Melvin, Julie Bergdorf; six great-grandchildren; a soon-to-be great-grandchild; six stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean and (Charles) Shirk, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, Joyce and (Ken) Peter, of Urbana, Ohio; one brother, Willis and (Betty) Ferryman, of Florida; one sister-in-law, Rebecca Ferryman Freeman, of Texas; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Millard K. Gatten; two sisters, Lois Charles, Janice Circle; a sister and brother who died in infancy; brother, Roger Ferryman; and numerous sisters and brothers-in-law.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at 5 to 8 p.m. at the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME, in Urbana. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Thursday where friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Oak Dale cemetery, in Urbana, Ohio.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Hospital CHIEF, 2615 E. High St., Springfield, Ohio 45505, or Heartland of Springfield, 2615 Derr Road, Springfield, Ohio.

Pauline Pheneger
Died: Monday, April 23, 2001

Pauline Grace Thompson Pheneger, 86, of Urbana, formerly of the Springhill-DeGraff area, died Monday, April 23, 2001, at The Ohio State University Hospital.

She was born Sept. 18, 1914, in Harrison Township, the daughter of Lloyd Leroy and Bessie Leota (Fry) Thompson.

She was a graduate of Harrison Adams High School and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Urbana, Constance Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Springhill Presbyterian Church and White Shrine of Urbana, Ohio. Served as a trustee of the Champaign County Senior Citizens, a member of the Farm Bureau Council and presiding judge at elections.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and (Charles) Caudill, of St. Paris, Ohio, Sally and (Dale) Couchman, of Sidney, Ohio; four grandchildren, David and Jana Caudill, Cindi and Jeff Buell, Heidi and David Daulton, Robin and Stan Hughes; two great-granddaughters, Mallary Jo Caudill and Bailey Grace Buell; one brother, Herbert K. Thompson, of Springfield, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond D. Pheneger, whom she married Oct. 24, 1936; one brother, Fred Thompson.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME, in Urbana. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 27, 2001, at 10 a.m. where friends may call. Burial will be in Greenwood Union cemetery, in DeGraff, Ohio.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Urbana Presbyterian Church Stain Glass Restoration Fund, 116 W. Court St., Urbana 43078.

Opal Mae Green
Died: Wednesday, May 9, 2001

Opal Mae Green Cauley Graves, 83, of Urbana, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at the McAuley Center in Urbana.

She was born on July 29, 1917, in Clark County, Ohio, the daughter of Harry and Melinda (Oiler) Green.

She was a former member of Lagonda United Methodist Church in Springfield, which she attended most of her life and was currently a member of Urbana Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Alice and Jerry Neer, of Urbana; six sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Becky Capper, of New Carlisle, Robert and Tanya Cauley, of Mingo, John and Judy Cauley, of Urbana, Tim Cauley, of Urbana, Bill and Iris Cauley, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Dick and Shelby Cauley, of Bellefontaine; one brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Violet Green, of South Vienna; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special daughter-in-law, Sarah Cauley; and caregiver, Sandy Conley, of Urbana.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Bartley James Cauley Sr. and Fred Graves; one son, Bart Cauley; and three brothers, Harry Green, Joe Green and Ray Green.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME, Springfield. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home, with the Rev. Roger Childers officiating. Burial will be in Newcomers cemetery.

Jasper Twade Propst
Died: Wednesday, May 9, 2001

Jasper Twade Propst, 62, of 175 W. Herr Road, Urbana, Ohio, died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at 11:50 p.m. in Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana, Ohio.

He was born April 8, 1939, in Springfield, Ohio, to Pearl and Martha (Koons) Propst.

He was a Service Engineer for Sasib Packaging DePere, Wis.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Hazel Propst, of Urbana; his son and daughter-in-law, David W. (Lisa) Propst, Urbana; daughters and sons-in-law, Leigh Anne (Robert) Trainer, of Springfield, Ohio, Marianne (Steve) Mabry, of Urbana, Ohio; three precious grandchildren, Zachary and Sydney Propst and Lexee Trainer; stepgranddaughter, Adrianne Mabry; stepgreat-granddaughter, Cortney Kiser; sisters, Helen Bryant and Shirley Seward; special nieces, Linda, Kari, Jessica Herbig; and a special nephew, Bill Collozo.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 13, 2001, from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. in the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, Ohio, where a funeral service will be held on Monday, May 14, 2001, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Larry Poling officiating. Burial in Oak Dale cemetery.

The family requests memorials to A Special Wish Foundation, P.O. Box 535, Urbana, Ohio 43078, or to Clark Champaign Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1106, Springfield, Ohio 45501, in lieu of flowers.

Elizabeth Thompson
Died: Monday, May 7, 2001

Elizabeth Helfrich Thompson, 91, of 428 Mosgrove St., Urbana, Ohio, died Monday, May 7, 2001, at 6:55 p.m. in Mercy McAuley Center, Urbana, Ohio.

She was born June 13, 1909, in Urbana, Ohio, the daughter of John and Lena (Feith) Helfrich.

She graduated from Urbana High School in 1927 and was retired from the Champaign County Engineer's Office.

Survived by children, Albert (Jean) Thompson, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, Ernest (Nancy) Thompson Jr., Robert (Mary) Thompson, all of Urbana; 18 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Thompson, Feb. 6, 1947; daughters, Dorothy Watson and Justine Richards; grandson, Steve Thompson; brothers, Forest, Howard, August and John Helfrich.

She was a member of Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, Daughters of American Revolution, Order of Eastern Star, Elizabeth Hood Chapter 505, Senior Citizen Center, Secretary of Ohio Club, an avid skater and Cincinnati Reds fan. She worked for the Champaign County Red Cross and was past president of PTA North.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 10, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, Ohio, where a funeral service will be held on Friday, May 11, 2001, at 10:30 a.m., with Pastor Larry Donner officiating. Burial will be in Oak Dale cemetery.

Marvin Collier
Died: Sunday, May 6, 2001

Marvin "Lucky" Collier, 75, of Woodstock, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2001, in his residence.

He was born April 26, 1926, in Paintsville, Ky., to Clara (Woods) Collier, of Mechanicsburg, and the late Oscar Collier Sr.

Lucky was an employee of Navistar International for the last 57 years, attended Woodstock Freewill Baptist Church, was a member of Local UAW 402 and an Army veteran of WWII.

He also is survived by his wife, Linda (Haynes) Collier, of Woodstock; seven children, Richard (Karen) Collier, of Marysville, John Collier, of Summer, Ga., Debra Sigmon, of Georgia, Brenda (Roger) Brannon, of Springfield, Peggy Collier, of Huntingon Beach, Calif., Phillip (Jackie) Collier, of Springfield, Jimmy (Tammy) Haynes, of Lakeview; six sisters and brothers, Dorothy Dobbins, of Marysville, Oscar Collier Jr., of Columbus, Mildred Wallace, of Mechanicsburg, Barbara Moore, of West Liberty, Marilyn Wyatt, of Mechanicsburg, Donald Collier, of Mechanicsburg; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2001, in SKILLMAN-MCDONALD FUNERAL HOME, Mechanicsburg, with Rev. Don Hix officiating. Burial will follow the service in Maple Grove cemetery, Mechanicsburg. Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Arlin Thackery
Died: Sunday, May 6, 2001

Arlin L. Thackery, 68, died unexpectedly May 6, 2001, at his home in Willimantic, Maine.

He was born Jan. 26, 1933, in Jackson Township, Ohio, son of Hobart and Anna (Davis) Thackery.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and then worked all his life as a mechanic. He was a member of the Willimantic Community Chapel. He loved hunting and fishing and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Pearl (Watkins) Thackery, of Willimantic; five daughters, Robin Rattigan, of Bangor, Maine, Sarah and her husband James Sill, of Parkman, Maine, Joyce Burton, of Willimantic, Patricia and her husband Alex Preble and Kathy and her husband Jared Panciera, of Abbot, Maine; a son and his wife, James and Mary Thackery, of Sangerville, Maine; a sister and her husband, Eileen and James Marchal; two brothers, Richard Thackery and Ivan Thackery and his wife Linda, all of St. Paris, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 9 at the CROSBY & NEAL FUNERAL HOME, 21 Oak St., Guilford, Maine. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Rev. Lloyd Rozelle officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside cemetery, in Willimantic.
