James M. Comer
Died: Thursday, April 12, 2001
James M. Comer, 91, of Russells Point, died on Thursday, April 12 at 7:18 p.m. at Heartland of Indian Lake Rehabilitation Center in Lakeview. He was born on June 7, 1909 in Champaign County, the son of the late Albert and Cora (Greathouse) Comer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie E. Linville Comber, on June 17, 1997. They were married
on Nov. 10, 1933.
Comer was a life-long farmer and retired from Airstream, Inc. in Jackson Center.
He is survived by one brother, Albert Lee Comer, of St. Paris; one sister, Mrs. Rheba Ridder of Springfield; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers in addition to his wife and his parents.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, April 16 at 2:30 p.m. at Huntsville cemetery in Huntsville, with the Rev. Bryan Meadows officiating.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 16 from 1-2 p.m. at the VAN HORN FUNERAL HOME, 115 N. Main St., Lakeview. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.vanhornfuneralhome.com.
Ida Drake
Died: Thursday, April 12, 2001
Ida F. "Tootie" Drake, 93, of Springfield, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in Heartland of Springfield at 2:10 a.m.
She was born Feb. 10, 1908, in Springfield, Ohio, the daughter of Samuel and Mary (Giddy) Evans.
Most of her life she was a seamstress and owned an upholstery shop prior to working with Wendell Smith Interior Decorations until her retirement. She enjoyed playing cards and was active in a local card club. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She was the matriarch of the family and loved each one of her family dearly, always ready with a helping hand and good sound advice.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert R. and Marjorie E. Rice, of Springfield; two granddaughters, Theresa (Tim) Carnes, of Urbana, and Marsha Stapleton, of South Charleston; five great-grandchildren, Tim (Tara) Carnes, Michele Melvin, Jill Stapleton, Michael Stapleton and Amy Lynn Stapleton; five great-great-grandchildren, Brittany, Michael and Hannah Carnes and Timmy and Sadie Melvin; numerous nieces, nephews and special nieces, Kaye Cox, Cathy Rhea, Marie Hughes, Xena Haley.
She was spreceded in death by eight brothers and four sisters.
Friends may visit with the family Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the JACKSON LYTLE & INGLING WILLIAMS FUNERAL HOME, North Limestone Chapel. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Ferncliff cemetery.

Alta Farmer
Died: Thursday, April 12, 2001
Alta Ineatia Farmer, 86, of 341 Hill St., Urbana, died Thursday, April 12 at 10 p.m. in the Wellington Nursing Rehabilitation Center. She was born Feb. 28, 1915 in Mount Morris, Ill., to the late Wiley Newton and Martha Elizabeth (Cunningham) Dolby.
She was a loving mother to Michael H. (Suzanne) Caldwell of Chicago, Ill.; Linda E. Adams of Des Moines, Iowa; Dennis B. Caldwell of Chicago, Ill.; Cheryl M. Irwin of Urbana; George D. Farmer of Gaithersburg, Md.; and stepdaughter Sheila (Norman) Clay of Dayton. She had six wonderful grandchildren: Marcus Caldwell, Andrea Robinson, Kyle Farmer, Anthony Irwin, Derik Farmer, and David Caldwell and one special great-grandchild, Trevor Irwin. Other survivors include sisters Margaret Plummer and Elizabeth Carter, both of Urbana; numerous neices and nephews; and two very close friends, Eugene Fields and Keli Adams.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Farmer, in April 1985; daughter Martha Caldwell in July 1982; grandson Michael H. Caldwell Jr.; brother Richard Dolby and sister Lulu Honore, both in March 2001; and her parents.
She was a devoted member of the Possum Road Church of God in Springfield.
A graveside service will be held at noon on Monday, April 16 at Oak Dale cemetery with the Rev. William Wilson officiating. Family will receive friends from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Monday at the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main St., Urbana.

David Weinert
Died: Wednesday, April 11, 2001
Funeral services for David J. Weinert, 54, of 12911 Christiansburg-Jackson Road, St. Paris, who passed away on Sunday, April 8 in the Upper Valley Medical Center, Troy, were held on Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in the Community Church of the Nazarene, St. Paris, with Pastor William E. Blain Jr. officiating, assisted by Pastor Bob Flint. Burial was in Upper Honey Creek cemetery. Pallbearers were Ron White, Henry, Tim and Dan Weinert, Robert Carmean, Shawn George and Dale Staudter.

Mary G. Smith, 94, of North Lewisburg, died April 10, 2001, in The Gables of Marysville. Graveside funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Maple Grove cemetery, North Lewisburg.
Marjorie Kenton
Died: Tuesday, March 13, 2001
Marjorie H. Kenton, 80, of Urbana, died Sunday evening, March 11, 2001, in her residence.
She was born Jan. 28, 1921, in Gas City, Ind., the daughter of Pearl M. and Martha Helen (Salzmann) Brattain.
Mrs. Kenton was a member of the Urbana Presbyterian Church. She was employed by Hall Company from 1962 to 1978 and was formerly employed by Champaign County Library.
Her survivors include her daughter, Rebecca A. Pyle, of Urbana; son and daughter-in-law, Andrew S. and Teresa Kenton, of Angola, Ind.; sister, Phyllis M. Valandry, of Dunedin, Fla.; brother, Dwight H. Brattain, of Bremen, Ohio; six grandchildren, Matthew (Melissa) Kenton, Peter Kenton, Sarah Kenton, Seth (Rosie) Pyle, Ben (Sarah) Pyle, Luke (Nichole) Pyle; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was spreceded in death by her parents; her husband of 48 years, Harold T. (Pete) Kenton, in 1989; and one brother, Richard.
A gathering of family and friends will be held in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME, Urbana, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial services will be held in the funeral home Thursday at 1 p.m., with Rev. Clifford Kissinger officiating. Burial will be in Oak Dale cemetery.

Woodrow Buck

Woodrow G. "Kapie" Buck, 65, beloved husband and father, died Sunday morning, March 11, 2001, in Mercy Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 22, 1936, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Woodrow and Mildred (Goddard) Buck.
Mr. Buck was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Lakeview.
His survivors include his wife of 44 years, Patricia A. (Yoakum) Buck; daughter and son-in-law, Lorri and Steve Lawson, of Springfield; son, Thomas Buck, of New Carlisle; sister and brother-in-law, Chris and Chuck Weirick, of Lakeview; brother and sister-in-law, David and Leda Buck, of St. Paris; brothers-in-law, Richard (Jerry Lou) Yoakum, of Columbus, Steve (Teresa) Yoakum, of Huron; granddaughter, Amy Branham; two special aunts, Sylvia Fietsam and Georgene Bluder; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held in Ferncliff cemetery Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.

Travis Mildred

Mildred Cordell Travis, 82, of Mechanicsburg, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2001, in McAuley Center, Urbana.
She was born May 6, 1918, in Madison County, the daughter of the late Roscoe and Pearl (Love) Cordell.
Mildred was a homemaker and had retired from the Mechanicsburg school cafeteria. Mildred was a member of the Oak Grove Church of Christ in Christian Union of Mechanicsburg and the Ladies Missionary Prayer Board.
She is survived by seven children, Margaret Welch, of Urbana, Meriam Joyce Gaver, Madelyn "Tootie" (Robert) Welch, Pamela Kay (Steve) Gallimore, all of Mechanicsburg, Bruce W. Travis, of Atlanta, Ga., Arthur W. (Jeannie) Travis, of Hilliard, Clyde Dennis Travis, of Columbus; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Pauline Cordell; brothers, Raleigh (Mildred) Cordell, Granville (Pauline) Cordell, all of Mechanicsburg, Grant Cordell, of Catawba; sister-in-law, Faye Cordell, of Mechanicsburg.
She was preceded in death by parents; husband, Elmer W. Travis, whom she married
May 18, 1935, in Chillicothe; a sister, Irene Salyers; and a brother, Herbert Cordell.
Funeral service at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Oak Grove Church of Christ in Christian Union, with Pastor Kelly Grimmett officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove cemetery, Mechanicsburg. Family and friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the SKILLMAN-MCDONALD FUNERAL HOME, Mechanicsburg.

Roy Carter
Died: Saturday, March 10, 2001
Roy Wesley Carter, 81, of West Liberty, Ohio, died March 10, 2001, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 12, 1919, the son of the late Frank C. Carter and Nettie Fairchild Carter.
He married
Mary Kathryn Bishop on Nov. 20, 1941, and she preceded him in death on July 16, 1977.
Mr. Carter owned and operated R.C. Mower Repair. He had farmed all of his life in Champaign County before moving to West Liberty in 1978. He was a WWII Army veteran and was a former POW. He served in the Battle of the Bulge. He had served as the grand marshal of the West Liberty Memorial Day Parade.
Mr. Carter is survived by one son, Herbert (Bonnie) Carter, of West Liberty; two daughters, Nancy (Jack) Hole, of West Liberty, and Linda (John) Bell, of Richwood; four grandchildren, Karen Aldo, of Bellefontaine, Stuart Carter, of West Liberty, Kenneth Plank, of Mt. Vernon, and Lance Corporal Christopher Plank, of Jacksonville, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, Kayla, Maverick and Jayden Aldo and Kenneth Plank Jr. He is also survived by one brother, Rosco (Ivolue) Carter, of North Lewisburg; one sister, Maybelle Hunt, of Urbana; one brother-in-law, Raymond Orahood, of North Lewisburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Ray Carter; and two sisters, Hattie Orahood and Betty Goff.
Memorial contributions may be made to the West Liberty EMS. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery, in West Liberty. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. at KAUFFMAN-EICHHOLTZ FUNERAL HOME, in West Liberty. Service will be Thursday, March 15 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
Floyd Godwin

Floyd Godwin, 71, of 230 E. Ward St., Urbana, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at 5:20 a.m. in his residence.
He was born on Aug. 19, 1929, in Bellefontaine, Ohio, to Harry Dow and Ethel (Wallace) Godwin.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean conflict.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Godwin, of Urbana; children, Jack, Dennis, Jim (Tammy) and Rob (Cathy) Healy, all of Columbus, Ohio, Chris (Rhonda) Healy, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Ron (Jennifer) Healy, of Appleton, Wis., Lisa Thiem, of San Diego, Calif., Sandra, (Brian) Jones, of Ramstein A.F. Base, Germany, and Heather (Franco) Brady, of Columbus, Ga.; 20 grandchildren; sisters, Nora Lee (Raymond) Deere, of Urbana, Josephine Kelly, of Kenton, Ohio, and JoAnne Cave, of Urbana; brother, Dean (Mickie) Godwin, of Bellefontaine, Ohio; father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Marcella Mott, of Urbana; a friend and honorary pallbearer, Dwight Pence, of Urbana.
Preceded in death by a sister, Waneta Wolford, and a brother, Lewis Godwin.
He was a member of the St. Mary Church of Urbana and St. Ann's Church, Ruskin, Fla.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary Church, with Fr. David Zink officiating. Burial in Oak Dale cemetery, Urbana.

Muriel E. Mitchell

Muriel E. Mitchell, 80, of Springfield, went to meet her maker on Friday, March 9, 2001.
She was born June 19, 1920, in Winnipeg, Canada, the daughter of Earl and Anna (Johnston) Rust.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Mitchell; her parents, Anna and Earl Rust; and a grandson, Douglas Mitchell.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Mary Ann Mitchell, of St. Paris, Ohio; one daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Chuck Wyant Sr., of Lakeview, Ohio; grandchildren, Anna Marie and Barry Adams, of Springfield, Diana and Mike Jett and Penny and Chuck Wyant Jr., all of Urbana, Stephanie and Gary Dibert, of DeGraff, Natalie and Chris Neu, of Springfield, Jennifer and Eric Coleman, of St. Paris, Kimberly Hutchinson, of DeGraff, Melissa and Timothy Wyant, of Buford, Ga., and Heidi and Mark Muirhead, of Urbana; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Doris Murray, of Springfield.
