Died: Friday, March 16, 2001

Gene Russell Hess, 71, of 5517 Wesley Chapel Road, Urbana, died at 9:03 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2001, in Lee Memorial Hospital, Ft. Myers, Fla.

He was born June 22, 1929, in Urbana, Ohio, to Ora and Lura (Heaton) Hess.

Mr. Hess retired from the Dayton Power and Light Co. after 35 years of service; a former member of Graham Board of Education and a Concord Township trustee. Member and past president of the Urbana Lions Club and the McGrew Lodge No. 433, Knights of Pythias; a central committee member of the Champaign County Democratic Party; member of Honda Wings Club. Bellefontaine Hi-Point See-Saw Square Dance Club and Wesley Chapel Church. Served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict.

Survived by his wife of 48 years, Betty (Straley) Hess, of Urbana; children, Mary Jo (Tim) Kohl, of Defiance, Ohio, Lora (Bob) Roush, of Urbana, Carol Hess, of Urbana, and Mark (Michele) Hess, of West Liberty, Ohio; grandchildren, Sean and Rusty Kohl, Curtis, Andy and Adam Roush, Rachel (Aaron) Hess Bradshaw and Michael (Sarah) Hess; great-grandson, Jared Bradshaw; sister, Betty Vanscoy, of Urbana; brothers, Alfred (Shirley) Hess, of Florida; Frank (LaDonna) Hess, of Urbana.

Preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Eathel, Paul, Freddie, Stanley, Phil, Leonard, Charles and Master Hess; sisters, Marcia and Carol Hess.

Friends may visit the family on Wednesday, March 21, 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. in the Walter-Schoedinger Funeral Home, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, Ohio, where services will be Thursday, March 22 at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Frank James officiating. Burial in Union cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made in Gene's memory to the Champaign County Cancer Association, Make a Wish Foundation or a charity of your choice.

Joseph Hlastan, 86, of Columbus, Ohio died Thursday, March 15, 2001 at 8:38 a.m.

Jayne Morris
Died: Friday, March 16, 2001

Jayne A. Morris, 72, of West Liberty, Ohio died on March 16, 2001 at 6:48 a.m. in her residence.

She was born Dec. 5, 1928 in Coffee County, Tennessee to Dillard and Lula Belle Steakley Stout, both deceased.

Jayne served in the community in many ways as a member of women's services groups in the First United Methodist church, honored for 35 years of volunteer participation at Mary Rutan Hospital Guild where she also served as local coordinator for the Ruth Lyons Children's Fund for hospitalized children.

An avid bowler, in BWBA leagues in her younger years, she participated in many league championships.

An avid golfer, Jayne won several honors and two club championships at the Bellefontaine Country Club. She was also a member of the state championship team for the American Cancer Society. She was also a member of the Urbana Country Club.

She was the co-owner of C&J; Laundries.

She is survived by her husband, Clinton Morris of West Liberty, Ohio, who she married on May 2, 1959 in Monroe, Michigan; sons, Richard Lynn Morris of Hebron, Ky., Clinton "Bill" (Petra) Morris Jr. of Omaha, Nebraska and Randolph R. (Miki) Morris of Honolulu, Hawaii; daughters, Mary Ann (Duane) Hartzler of West Liberty, Ohio, Elizabeth J. (Beti) Camisa of Houston, Texas, and Joyce (Richard) Brown of Miami, Florida; brother J. D. (Betty) Stout of Little Rock, Arkansas; sisters, June Bush of Franklin, Tennessee, and Helen (Bruce) Williams of Nashville, Tennessee; half brother Claude (Lucille) Julian of Chattanooga, Tennessee; half sister Cora (Bobbi) Hartley of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brother, John T. Stout; half brothers Fred Julian and Ernest "Shelby" Julian; half sister Ann Humphries.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 19, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Bellefontaine, Ohio with the Rev. William Zeller officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial cemetery in West Liberty, Ohio.

Visitation will be on Sunday, March 18 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the KAUFFMAN-EICHHOLTZ FUNERAL HOME in West Liberty.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hope Lodge, 11432 Mayfield Road, Cleveland, Ohio 44106 or to the Logan County Cancer Society.

Nicholas Dragics
Died: Thursday, March 15, 2001

Nicholas G. Dragics, 61, of 1018 Bon Air Drive, Urbana, Ohio died Thursday, March 15, 2001 at 4:14 a.m. in Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana, Ohio.

He was born in Newark, Ohio on April 14, 1939 to Nicholas and Cecil (Provin) Dragics. He was a CPA and owner of Home Hobbies and Crafts in Springfield, Ohio.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Susan (Gibson) Dragics of Urbana; mother, Cecil Dragics of Columbus, Ohio; children, Brad (Cyndee) Dragics of Hilliard, Sharon (Lawrence) Reaven of Urbana; grandchildren, Christopher Dragics, Sarah and Kathryn Reaven; brothers, Robert Dragics of Reno, Nevada and David (Jackie) Dragics of Laurel, Md.

He was preceded in death by his father.

He was a graduate of The Ohio State University and was a member of the OSU Alumni Association, the Ohio Society of CPAs, the Urbana United Methodist Church and the B&O; Historical Society.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 18, 2001 in the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, Ohio where a funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday with the Rev. Norman Wright officiating. Entombment in Oak Dale cemetery.

Donations may be made in Nicholas' memory to P.A.W.S., 1535 U. S. Route 36, Urbana, Ohio 43078.

Joseph Hlastan
Died: Thursday, March 15, 2001

Joseph Hlastan, 86, a resident of The Worthington Christian Village, Worthington, Ohio, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2001 following a brief illness.

He was born in Madison, Pennsylvania to Michael and Marie Hlastan on Jan. 31, 1915.

He was formerly of Urbana and lived in Sandusky, Ohio for many years before moving to Findlay, Ohio and then to Wildwood, Florida. He had been employed at Philco in Sandusky and RCA in Findlay. He was an avid golfer and also enjoyed gardening.

He is survived by two sons, Thomas (Sandy) Hlastan and Ronald (Janet) Hlastan, all of Columbus, Ohio; three daughters, Claire (Jay) Schaumleffel of Hayes, Va., Cindi (Damon) Hicks of Beaverton, Oregon and Susan (Wayne) Bilbrey of Sandusky, Ohio; two brothers, Dennis and Michael, both of Maryland; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia, parents, two sisters and two brothers.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the Worthington Christian Village with Pastor Glenn Zorb of All Saints Lutheran Church, High Street, Columbus, Ohio officiating.

Entombment will be in the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Leesburg, Florida.

The WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, Ohio is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Clark
Died: Wednesday, March 14, 2001

Elizabeth Clark, 90, of 581 Washington Ave., Urbana, Ohio died Wednesday, March 14, 2001 in Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana, Ohio.

She was born Nov. 2, 1910 in Champaign County to Fred and Alta (Stout) Clark. She was the former owner of Clarks Greenhouse.

Preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Harold Clark in 1980.

She attended the Urbana United Methodist Church.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 19, 2001 at 2 p.m. in the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, Ohio with calling hours one hour prior with Rev. Norman Wright officiating. Burial in Oak Dale cemetery.

Emma Sheline
Died: Wednesday, March 14, 2001

Emma J. "Janet" Sheline, 82, of 307 N. Church St., St. Paris, Ohio, died at 12:25 p.m. Monday, March 12, 2001, in Ridgewood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Springfield.

She was born on July 22, 1918, in Champaign County, Ohio, to Harry F. Niece and Ruth Vera (Williams) Niece, both deceased.

A homemaker, she was a member of the Covenant Lutheran Church, St. Paris, and the AARP.

She is survived by two sons, Donald Sheline, of Grandview Heights, St. Paris, and Robert W. "Bill" (Sue) Sheline, of Sacramento, Calif.; two daughters, Dixie D. Randall, of St. Paris, and Ruthanna (Tom) Heymann, of New Carlisle; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one brother, Harry (Juanita) Niece, of Springfield.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elwood F. Sheline, who she married on Oct. 30, 1937, and who died on Sept. 22, 1987; one son, Fred Elwood Sheline; one grandson, Robert William Sheline Jr.; one brother, Robert William Niece; one sister, Opal Dixie Pence.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2001, at the Covenant Lutheran Church, 103 S. Church St., St. Paris, with Rev. Gerald Anderson officiating. Burial will take place in Sacramento, Calif., at a later date. RICHESON-WICKHAM AND ATKINS FUNERAL HOME, St. Paris, is serving the family.

Raymond R. Garvey
Died: Tuesday, March 13, 2001

Raymond R. Garvey, 58, of Springfield, Ohio, died on Sunday, March 11, 2001, at 6:19 p.m.

He was born June 26, 1942, in 5 Points, Pickaway County.

He had retired from Speco Corp. after 26 years of service.

He is survived by his mother, Grace Garvey, of Urbana, Ohio; sons, David Garvey, of Springfield, Ohio, and Mark (Melissa) Garvey, of Urbana, Ohio; grandchildren, Suzzanna, Levi, Zach, Sue Ji, Austin and Alicia; brothers, John, Kenny, Frank, Larry, Gary, of Urbana, and Fredrick Garvey, of Quincy, Ohio; sisters, Geneva Corwin, of Florida, Connie Scott and Rossetta Slusher, of Kenton, Ohio, Barbara Kiss, of Zanesfield, Ohio; fiancee, Bobbi Geuy, of Urbana; special niece, Debbie Lock, as well as other nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his father, Fred Garvey, of Urbana, Ohio; sisters, Lucille Holland and Willa Jean Blue.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 13, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, Ohio, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. James Chess officiating. Burial in Kingscreek cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice, 1343 N. Fountain Blvd., Springfield, Ohio 45504, in Raymond's memory.

Anna Burkholder
Died: Friday, April 13, 2001

Anna Mary Burkholder, 90, recently of Woodstock, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 13, 2001, at McAuley Center, in Urbana, Ohio, following a brief illness.

She was born on Nov. 29, 1910, in Allen County, Ohio, to Albert L. and Mildred Newell Burkholder, both deceased.

She was married to William E. Burkholder, on Nov. 12, 1929, in Covington, Ky., and had made her home in Lima, Ohio, until March of 1999.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard L. (Jean) and James E. (Patricia), both of Lima, Ohio, and Thomas W. (Patricia), of Woodstock, Ohio; a sister, Florine (Snookie) Keister, of Virginia, and a sister, Helen (Elvis) Gibbons, of California. She leaves behind a great many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.

She was retired from Lima Memorial Hospital, where she worked for many years as an elevator operator and later as part of the housekeeping staff.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 59 years; a son; a daughter; two brothers; and three sisters.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 16, 2001, at CHILES AND SONS FUNERAL HOME, on Shawnee Road, in Lima. Pastor Richard Otto will share a time of prayer with the family. A graveside service for the family will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Memorial Park, in Lima. Pastor Dan Leiker will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to McAuley Center, 904 Scioto St., Urbana, Ohio 43078.

Charlene Taulbee
Died: Friday, April 13, 2001

Charlene Marie "Cookie" Appel Taulbee, 58, a longtime resident of Marysville, died unexpectedly Friday, April 13, 2001, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, in Columbus, from complications following surgery.

She was an associate with the Union County Board of MRDD and worked as a production trainer for U-Co Industries, in Marysville, for several years. She was a loving wife and mother and a devoted grandmother. She was proud of her huge collection of salt and peppershakers, especially her Christmas sets. She enjoyed collecting antiques. She was an experienced seamstress and loved to crochet and quilt.

She was born Aug. 17, 1942, in Springfield, to the late Charles and Evelyn De La Croix Appel. She was a 1961 graduate of Villa Madonna Academy, in Covington, Ky.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, John C. Taulbee Sr., whom she married Sept. 16, 1961, at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Russells Point, Ohio; a son, John C. Taulbee Jr., of Marysville; three daughters, Joan (Dale) Andrews, of West Mansfield, Jenny (Dan) Kibbey, of Raymond, and Jill Taulbee, of Massena, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren, Jessica and Philip Taulbee, Julie, Jarid, Tori and Allison Andrews, Amanda (Vaughn) Young, Joe, T.J. and Heather Kibbey; one great-granddaughter, Rowan Andrews; three sisters, Sue (Dennis) Kelly, of Springfield, Virginia Sachs, of Urbana, and Mary Lynn Johnson, of Springfield; a brother, Charles Appel, of Powder Springs, Ga.; a brother-in-law, Julian Taulbee; two sisters-in-law, Frances Schroer and Louanna Walker; and several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church, at Russells Point. The Rev. Fr. Patrick A. Toner will officiate and interment will be at Huntsville cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at UNDERWOOD FUNERAL HOME, 703 E. Fifth St., Marysville.

Memorial contributions may be made to U-Co Industries, 835 E. Fifth St., Marysville, Ohio 43040. Memorial envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Timothy Wynn
Died: Friday, April 13, 2001

Timothy D. Wynn, 35, of Prospect Street, Mechanicsburg, passed away suddenly Friday, April 13, 2001, at 7:05 p.m. in the emergency room of Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana.

Timothy was born Aug. 16, 1965, in Urbana.

Survivors include two sons, Zachary and Joshua Wynn, of Urbana; father and stepmother, William (Karen) Wynn, of Woodstock; brothers, Bryan Wynn, of Urbana, Mark (Heather) Wynn, of San Diego, Calif., Scott (Raeanna) Wynn, of East Liberty, Matt (Missy) Wynn, of Richwood, Kevin (Paula) Wynn, of Marysville, Larry Wynn, of Illinois; stepbrother, J.P. Culp, of Woodstock; grandparents, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

His mother, Mary L. (Harris) Wynn, preceded him in death.

Graveside funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday in Woodstock cemetery, with Roger Wicks officiating. Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the SKILLMAN-MCDONALD FUNERAL HOME, Mechanicsburg. The pallbearers who will serve are Bryan, Mark, Scott and Kevin A. Wynn, J.P. Culp, Steve Stapleton, Doug McCreay. The honorary pallbearers are Kevin, Larry and Keith Wynn and Rusty Pence.

To help defray funeral expenses, contributions may be made to the Skillman-McDonald Funeral Home.
