James Simpson
Died: Friday, August 10, 2001
James N. Simpson, 81, formerly of the Springhills area where he lived with his wife of 57 years (lived in Springhills for 48 years), died at 11:20 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, in Berger Hospital, Circleville, Ohio.
He was born on June 18, 1920, in Quincy, Ohio, to Arthur Simpson and Maud (Young) Simpson.
His wife, Lewanda Brandeberry Simpson, died on Feb. 14, 1998. They were married
on Jan. 22, 1941, in Rosewood, Ohio.
He is survived by a son, James R. Simpson, Orlando, Fla.; daughters, Gwendolyn Dappert, of Destor, Ore., Ruby (Gary) Roberts, Chillicothe, Garnet (Tony) McCammon, of Circleville; brothers, Jack, Rosewood, Donald, of Springhills; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; special friend, Lavern Paskins, Stoutsville.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Downing, and two sisters.
Retired from the Stolle Corp., Sidney, in 1988 after 28 years, he was a former employee of Wal-Mart, where he worked nearly five years. He was a WWII Army veteran. Graveside military rites will be conducted by local veterans services organizations.
A visitation will be held on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Monday from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. in the EICHHOLTZ FUNERAL HOME, Bellefontaine. A funeral will be held in the Eichholtz Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, with Pastor Lonnie Potts officiating. Interment will be in Bellefontaine cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson Foundation.
Thomas Offenbacker
Died: Wednesday, August 8, 2001
Thomas M. Offenbacker, 83, of Columbus, Ohio, and formerly of 424 Pindar St., Urbana, Ohio, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at 2:30 a.m. in Arbors East, Columbus, Ohio.
He was born Oct. 26, 1917, in Urbana, Ohio, to Frank M. and Ethel (Hilling) Offenbacker.
He was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran.
Survived by daughters, Caroline (Henry) Scarberry, of Danville, W.Va., Alta (Greg) Mosic, of Columbus; grandchildren, Denise Laughlin and Alan Neer; four great-grandsons; and a halfbrother, Wayne Simmons.
Preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Offenbacker, on Dec. 11, 1995; grandson, Tommy Neer; two sisters; and his parents.
Tom was a member of the Northside Church of God, Urbana, Ohio, and the Disabled American Veterans.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. in the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, Ohio, on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001. A funeral service will be held on Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the Northside Church of God, 985 East Lawn Ave., Urbana, Ohio, with Rev. David Gammello officiating. Burial in Myrtle Tree cemetery.
Laura Ropp
Died: Tuesday, August 7, 2001
Laura Elizabeth Ropp, 75, of 408 Sonander Road, Urbana, Ohio, died at 3 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, in Mercy Medical Center, Springfield.
She was born on Dec. 30, 1925, in Urbana, Ohio, to Marion N. Bodey and Mae Irene (Newell) Bodey, both deceased.
A former school bus driver for West Liberty-Salem Schools, she was a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, in Bellefontaine, the Rebekah Lodge, in Middleburg, and the Hill and Valley Club, of Mingo.
She is survived by her husband, Leonard George Ropp, of Urbana, who she married
on April 18, 1942; four sons, Nelson (Pat) Ropp, of Urbana, Elmer Ropp, of St. Paris, William Ropp, of Middleburg, and Edward Ropp, of Lucasville; four daughters, Esta Huffman, of Urbana, Clara (Gene) Cupps, of Urbana; Leona (Lewis) Minnich, of Urbana, Susan Holbrook, of Urbana; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one brother, Hugh Bodey, of Myrtle Creek, Ore.; and one sister, Elsie Anaple, of Cincinnati.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Marion Ropp; two brothers, Levi Bodey and Ernest Bodey; and one sister, Thelma Bump.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, in the RICHESON-WICKHAM AND ATKINS FUNERAL HOME, 216 S. Springfield St., St. Paris, with Rev. Bob Instine officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery, Conover. A visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, in the funeral home.

Mary Woodburn
Died: Thursday, February 14, 2002
Mary Mabel Woodburn, 89, of 210 Henry St., Urbana, Ohio, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at 5 p.m. in Mercy Medical Center, Springfield, Ohio.
She was born Sept. 15, 1912, in Champaign County, to Robert and Minnie (Mauck) Neil.
She worked for many years as a nurse for Dr. Pond.
Survived by a son, Neil Barnett, of Cable, Ohio, granddaughters, Rebecca (Harold) Kaiser, Theresa Barnett, Sandra Barnett, stepson, Dr. James Woodburn, California, sisters, Juanita Derr, of Urbana, Ohio, Janice Holovack, of Martinez, Ga., and several nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by parents, husband, Dr. Ansel Woodburn, brothers, George Neil, Cleland Neil, and a sister, Notie Perry.
Mary was a member of the First Baptist Church.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at 10 a.m. in the WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, A Dignity Memorial Provider, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, Ohio, with visitation one hour prior. Rev. Clifford Kissinger will officiate and burial will be in Oak Dale cemetery.
Mary Finlay
Died: Wednesday, February 13, 2002
Mary E. Finlay, 85, a former St. Paris resident, died on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at the Piqua Manor Nursing Home.
She was born in Champaign County Oct. 2, 1916, the daughter of the late Charles and Dolly (McMorran) Wiant.
She was married
to Donald Finlay and he preceded her in death in 1975.
She was a homemaker and a member of the St. Paris Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Neva and James Hufford, of Casstown, and a son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Dianne Finlay, of Heath, Ohio, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Martha Caven, of Sidney, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Neva DeWeese, Susan Weller and Gertrude Stickley.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the SUBER FUNERAL HOME, in Fletcher, in charge of Rev. Dr. James VanZile, pastor of the St. Paris Baptist Church. Burial will be in Spring Grove cemetery, St. Paris. Visitation will be on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Nylan Ruth
Died: Monday, February 11, 2002
Ruth L. Nylan, 89, of Menasha, Wis., and formerly of Urbana and Dayton, Ohio, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, in Menasha.
Ruth was born to the late Herman and Ida (Shoemaker) Shy on Nov. 30, 1912, in Plain City, Ohio.
In 1937, Ruth married
Richard Nylan in St. Mary Catholic Church, in Urbana, Ohio. He precedes her in death.
Ruth will be remembered for her caring way and special smile.
She is survived by daughters, Mary Kiley, of Dayton, Ohio, and Ruth (Ronald) Sell, of Appleton, Wis., grandchildren, Michael (Paula) Alger, Mary Elaine Alger, Marcie (Mark) Mammem, Marisa (Lewis) May, Kevin Kiley, Kara Hall, Benjamin (Katie) Sell and Christopher Sell, sister, Elaine McKinney. She is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
She also was preceded in death by brothers, Ronald and Herman Shy.
Friends may call in the Chapel of Oak Dale cemetery, Urbana, Ohio, from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday where prayers will be recited by Fr. Gregory Konerman at 11 a.m. Arrangements are provided by WALTER-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, a Dignity Memorial Provider, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, Ohio.
Margaret Perry
Died: Sunday, February 3, 2002
Margaret A. Perry, age 108, of Urbana, passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2002, in Heartland of Urbana. She was born February 2, 1894, in North Lewisburg the daughter of the late Joseph and Florence (Speaks) Hackley. Margaret was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and homemaker.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law W. Herman and Evelyn B. Perry, of Urbana, with whom she made her home after her Husband's death in 1955; three granddaughters, Barbara Perry,of Lake Worth, Fla., Carolyn (William) Newell, of Mooresville, N.C., Dorothy (Raymond) Lee, of Dublin; grandchildren William Newell, Michelle Lee, Raymond Lee and Katie Lee.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, William George "Gowie" Perry.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the SKILLMAN-McDONALD FUNERAL HOME, Mechanicsburg with Rev. Norm Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Jenkins Chapel cemetery, Cable. Family and friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the funeral home. Lucy Janser
Died: Saturday, February 2, 2002
Lucy V. Janser, age 76, of Mechanicsburg (formerly of Canton), passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2002, in Heartland of Urbana. She was born on January 10, 1926, in East Liverpool. Lucy was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and homemaker.
Survivors include: three daughters, Garnetta (Darrell) Cummings, of Mechanicsburg, Sarah Dunn of Florida and Peggy Sheldon, of Eads, Colo.; ten grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Joseph Janser.
A Graveside Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in Maple Grove cemetery with Rev. Wandel Lee Toney officiating. Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday in the SKILLMAN-McDONALD FUNERAL HOME.
Jacqueline Thomas
Died: Saturday, February 2, 2002
Jacqueline R. Thomas, 49, of Springfield, died in Mercy Medical Center on Saturday, February 2, 2002, following a brief illness. She was born in Clark County on November 4, 1952, the daughter of Lloyd and Norma (Spickity) Clapp. Jacqueline was a 1970 graduate of Shawnee High School and a die-hard Cleveland Browns fan.
She is survived by her husband Kevin L. Thomas; one daughter, Amy N. Steinhauer and her fiance Rodney Sanders, of Springfield; one son, Steven L. Warren; one sister and brother-in-law, Kathy L. Brittin, of Springfield; two brothers, Steven Clark of Orlando, Fla. and Gary Clapp of Springfield; three grandchildren, Aaron J. D. Steinhauer, Mickaela L. N. Steinhauer and Ryan E. Sanders; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Gladys Davis

Gladys Davis, 92, formerly of Celina, died at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2002, at her daughter's home in Urbana, Ohio, where she had resided for 14 years.
She was born on Dec. 17, 1909, in Maywood, Ill., to Albert and Alma (Haker) Nieman.
She was married
to Ervin S. Davis on Nov. 10, 1932. He died on Dec. 12, 1975.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by one son, Stan (and Nancy) Davis, of St. Marys, Ohio; two daughters, Carol (and Mike) Detrick, of Urbana, Ohio, and Judy Davis, of Celina; two sisters, Edythe Brooks, of Santa Clara, Calif., and Eleanore Finkbeiner, of LaGrange, Ill.; four grandchildren, Chris (and Coy) Boroff, Mark (and Shelly) Davis, Todd (and Cathy) Detrick and Jim Detrick; eight great-grandchildren; and special friend and caregiver, Sharon (and Ricky) Shumaker, of Springfield, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacquelyn Joyce Davis; three sisters, Dorothy Fike, Kay Ross and Arlene Brooks; four brothers, Ed, Irving, Herb and Willis Nieman.
A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3 at the W.H. Dick & Sons Funeral Home, Celina, with Rev. Norman Wright officiating. Burial will be in State Line cemetery, Washington Township, Mercer County. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 at the W.H. Dick & Sons Funeral Home, Celina, Ohio.

John Richard "Flash" Gordon, 76, of St. Paris, and formerly of Mechanicsburg, died Friday, March 16, 2001, in Mercy Medical Center, Springfield.
He was born Feb. 26, 1925, in Mechanicsburg, the son of the late John and Inez (Bradley) Gordon.
Richard was retired from Navistar.
He is survived by a granddaughter, Lori (Jon) Baird, of High Point, N.C.; a great-grandson, Kyle Baird; special nieces, Sandy (Phil) Coolbaugh, of Mechanicsburg, and Betty (Paul) Kennedy, of Columbus; great-nieces, great-nephews, a great-great-niece and all his special firends from the St. Paris Subway store.
His parents, wife, Opal (Ballard) Gordon, son, Roger Dean Gordon, sister, Myrtle Middleton, and a brother, Elmer Gordon, preceded him in death.
Funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the SKILLMAN-MCDONALD FUNERAL HOME, Mechanicsburg, with Rev. Larry Poling officiating. Burial will follow in McConkey cemetery. Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
