Alice Lucille Hawes
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Alice Lucille Hawes, 85, died Jan. 12, 2000, in Riverside.
The daughter of Charles and Mabel (Cone) Lago, she was born Feb. 21, 1914, in Northeast, Pa. She grew up in North Kingsville and later lived in Pittsburgh and Ashtabula before moving to California.
Survivors include daughters Pat Mericka of Jefferson and Bobbi Morris of Mareno Valley, Calif.; brother Melvin P. Todd of Deming, N.M.; sisters Kathryn Sposito, Elsie McKain and Lillian Weagraff, all of Ashtabula, and Cora Weston of Riverside; and 11 grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Alfred Patterson; her second husband, George Hawes; a daughter, Esther Cole Yeager; a grandson, Jeffrey Mericka; four brothers, William, Robert, Charles and Leonard; and two sisters, Helen Hart and Audrey Makynen.
A memorial service was held in Mareno Valley. A graveside service was held in Eastlake cemetery, North Kingsville.
Florence Vogelsang
LARGO, Fla. - Florence Vogelsang, 87, a former Geneva resident, died Monday, Jan. 25, 2000, at Largo Medical Center.
She was born in Cleveland and moved to Largo from Geneva in 1962.
She was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Largo.
Survivors include sons Louis A. of Largo and John M. of Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and seven great - grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Martin Vogelsang, former pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church in Tampa, Fla.
Harold W. Banfield
CONNEAUT - East Main Road resident, Harold W. Banfield, 77, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at his home following a seven - month illness.
Born Jan. 24, 1922, in Cuba, N.Y., he was the son of George M. Banfield and Merle (Whaley) Banfield Scowden. He was a Conneaut resident for 50 years.
Mr. Banfield was a 1941 graduate of Albion High School.
He was employed at Reactive Metals Inc. for 32 years.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving as a gunner on merchant ships during World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific.
Mr. Banfield was a member of Company "C" National Guard 137th Armory; the Conneaut Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2836; Cowle Post 151 American Legion; and the Armed Guard Association.
He was affiliated with East Conneaut Baptist Chapel.
He enjoyed collecting arrowheads, woodworking and watching boxing on television.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille (Williams) Banfield, whom he married
May 30, 1944; three daughters, Patricia Huston of Indeo, Calif., Sandy Lane of California, Md., and Cynthia Miller of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two sisters, Barbara Reitz of Albion, Pa., and Louise Henretty of Noel, Mo.; and four grandchildren, Jason D. Harrington, Donna M. Space, James H. Space, and Sarah Harrington.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda L. Space in 1993; and two brothers, Bud and Jim Banfield.
Service is 2 p.m. Saturday at the Marcy Funeral Home, a Family Care Group affiliate, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with the Rev. Terry Kern, pastor of East Conneaut Baptist Chapel, officiating. Burial will be in East Conneaut cemetery with the American Legion conducting military rites.
Calling hours are noon until the time of service Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Blache B. Battles
THOMPSON TOWNSHIP - Blanche B. Battles, 89, of Thompson Township, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at Geauga Regional Hospital in Claridon Township.
She was born Feb. 21, 1910, in Willoughby, the daughter of William George and Charlotte (Surko) Black, and had been an area resident since 1934.
She was a bookkeeper for the former Snap Out Forms for many years, retiring in 1975. Previously, she worked for the former Thrasher's Meat Market on Chardon's square.
She married
Harmon Battles on April 4, 1934, in Mentor.
She was a 25 - year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, past matron of the Ruby Chapter in Chardon, Myrtle Chapter in Madison and a member of the Urania Chapter in Painesville; and a 50 - year member of the Ledge Grange in Thompson Township and Pomona Grange in Geauga County.
In her leisure time she enjoyed gardening, needlework, cooking lodge dinners with the Eastern Star and preparing pancake breakfasts at the Geauga County Maple Festival.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis of Thompson Township, and Ford of New Lyme; four grandchildren and three great - grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Dorothy Woods and Evelyn Lamos; and a brother, George Black.
Service is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., in Chardon. David West, pastor of the Southington United Methodist Church in Southington, will officiate. Burial will be in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chesterland.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Richard L. Dodd
CONNEAUT - Richard L. Dodd, 59, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at his home following a two - year illness with cancer.
Born March 8, 1940, in Ashtabula, he was the son of John N. and Lorna (McClintock) Dodd.
He attended Ashtabula High School.
After high school, he was employed by Austinburg Feed Mill. He later worked for the Exomet Co. in Conneaut, and for more than 20 years, was a truck driver for many local companies in Ohio and around the country.
Mr. Dodd enjoyed boating, fishing, John Deere tractors, electric trains, and was a steam train enthusiast.
He was a member of the Conneaut Moose Club.
Survivors include his wife, the former Jane Wnoroski, whom he married
Feb. 6, 1960 at St. Frances Cabrini Church; two sons, Robert of Conneaut, and Michael of Mount Vernon; two daughters, Pamela Blackwell of Jacksonville, Fla., and Kimberly Hostetler of Pittsburgh; a brother, Dale of Jefferson; a sister, Linda Lepke of Twinsburg; and seven grandchildren, Matthew, Mallory, Raymond Frabotta, Micah, Derrick, Megan Blackwell and Tyler Hostetler.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Service is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Raisian Funeral Home, a Family Care Group affiliate, 581 Harbor St., Conneaut, with the Rev. Ash Welch of East Conneaut United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Gageville cemetery in Sheffield.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Caroline Jeanne Jackson
ARTESIA, N.M. - Caroline Jeanne (Schultz) Jackson, 68, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, of cancer, at her home.
Born Feb. 11, 1931, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Harry L. and Regie C. Schultz.
She married
H. Clair Jackson on June 10, 1950.
Mrs. Jackson lived in the Ashtabula County area until 1976, when she and her husband moved to Florida, then on to Artesia, where they lived for the past 19 years.
While in Ohio, she was employed by several restaurants, Char - Lotte Village Nursing Home, and Premix. She retired in 1993 from the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Artesia.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Linda E. of Albuquerque, N.M., and Debbie J. of Artesia; two sons, E. Harley and Kevin D., both of Conneautville, Pa.; four sisters, Arlene Roscoe of Greene, Betty Gubanyar of Orwell, Carol Cartner of Rock Creek, and Virginia Muse of Ashtabula; three brothers, Robert of Jefferson, Charles of Ashtabula, and Paull of Grier, S.C.; 13 grandchildren; and two great - grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Harry L. Jr.
There will be no calling hours or funeral.

The Rev. John A. Loxterman
PAINESVILLE - The Rev. John A. Loxterman, 80, of Painesville and Cape Coral, Fla., died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at Lake East Hospital in Painesville.
He was born Nov. 28, 1918, in Fairport Harbor.
A 1937 graduate of Harding High School, he served with the Army during World War II. He co - founded Lockie Lee Dairy and Ohio's Convenient Food Mart, which led to the creation of 147 stores.
Before founding Lockie Lee, he was employed by Buckeye Dairy and Diamond Alkali. After graduating from Wittenberg University and Hamma School of Theology, he was ordained in the Lutheran Church of America on July 6, 1969, at Zion Lutheran Church in Fairport.
While in seminary he served at Lees Creek United Church of Christ, and after ordination served at Faith Lutheran in Millersburg. He also served as interim minister at Zion Lutheran Church in Fairport, where he was given the title "Honorary Finn." He is pastor emeritus of the Millersburg and Fairport churches.
Survivors include his wife, the former Elma Hokkanen; a daughter, Patricia Rousch of Painesville; sons Richard of Madison and Kirk of Painesville; two brothers, Lawrence of Painesville, and William of Concord; three sisters, Virginia Sandstrom, Louise Jacobson and Lourdean Falcone, all of Painesville; 10 grandchildren and 13 great - grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers Andrew, Paul and Howard, and a sister, Annaclair Loxterman.
Service is 1 p.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, 508 Eagle St., Fairport. The Rev. Richard Bowen will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran cemetery, Fairport Harbor.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home, 368 Mentor Ave., Painesville, and 11 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church.

Ruth R. Stoffel
RICHMOND TOWNSHIP - Leon Square resident Ruth R. Stoffel, 82, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at UPMC - Horizon Hospital in Greenville, Pa.
Born Oct. 12, 1916, in Hughart, W. Va., she was the daughter of James E. and Lucy R. (Shirkey) Carr, and lived in the area her entire life.
She married
Herbert D. Stoffel on Feb. 14, 1937.
Mrs. Stoffel was a homemaker, and she worked on the Stoffel family dairy farm with her husband.
She was a 1934 graduate of Shaw High School in Cleveland and trained as a nurse at the St. Luke's School of Nursing in Cleveland.
She was a member of the Richmond Grange and Richmond Hobby Club. In earlier years, she was active in the Richmond 4 - H; Parent - Teacher Association; and the Holstein Association.
She attended both the Cherry Valley and Leon United Methodist churches.
Survivors include her husband, Herbert of Dorset; a son, James C. Stoffel of Andover; two daughters, Christine M. Kniesly of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Julia Lee Pasker of Lititz, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; and five great - grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, George D.
Memorial service is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Leon United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sandra K. Payette officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be in West Andover cemetery.
Calling hours are 10 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church.

Samuel K. Taylor
CLARIDON TOWNSHIP - Samuel K. Taylor, 77, of Claridon Township, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at Geauga Regional Hospital.
He was born April 12, 1922, in Cleveland, the son of William R. and Katherine (Kelley) Taylor. He moved to the area from Cleveland 23 years ago.
He was a mechanical engineer for the former Technicare of Solon, retiring in 1986 after 44 years' service.
He served with the Army during World War II, and was a 1944 graduate of University School in Cleveland and the Massachuettes Institute of Technology.
Mr. Taylor was known as the father of the mechanical aspects of CAT Scan Imaging and was instrumental in the development of the MRI Medical Resonance Imaging and patient lift chairs. He also was the owner of several patents.
He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and was a member of the Fairmount Presbyterian Church in Cleveland.
Survivors include his wife, the former Joan Pfeifer, whom he married
June 15, 1946, in Cleveland; four daughters, Janet Lichtkoppler of Denver, Colo., Carolyn Thum of Lakewood, Joan Cikra of Bay Village, and Barbara Anderson of Burton; a brother, William R. Taylor of Dunedin, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Katherine Anderson.
Service is 2 p.m. Sunday at Lakeview cemetery, Wade Chapel, Mayfield Road, Cleveland. Donald Grauer, pastor of the Valley Presbyterian Church in Bainbridge, will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeview cemetery, Cleveland.
Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

Albin F. Urankar
GENEVA - Albin F. Urankar, M.D., 82, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at home, following a short illness.
Dr. Urankar was an area resident since 1957, moving here from Cleveland.
Memorial service is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Assumption Catholic Church, 594 W. Main St., Geneva. The Rev. Paul Tobin will officiate. Burial will be in All Souls cemetery in Chardon.
No calling hours will be observed.

Frances Ann Young
HARTSGROVE - Frances Ann Young, 83, of Hartsgrove, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at the Village Square Nursing Home in Orwell Township.
She was born July 26, 1916, in Cleveland, the daughter of Frank and Frances (Petric) Shenk. She was a licensed practical nurse.
Survivors include a brother, Frank A. Shenk of Euclid; a niece, Geri Becker of Geneva; and a nephew, Al Becker of Rome.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Young, in 1957; and a sister, Olga Becker.
Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Church, 103 N. Maple St., Orwell. The Rev. Gregory Fedor will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery in Cleveland.
Calling hour is 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Church.
The Paine Funeral Home, 140 E. Main St., Orwell, is in charge of arrangements.
Brett Adam Blair
SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP - Brett Adam Blair, 14, of West Farmington, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at his home.
Born Oct. 4, 1985, in Euclid, he was a son of Gary A. and Connie (Finnell) Blair and was a lifelong area resident.
He was an eighth - grader at Cardinal Middle School, Middlefield, where he played offensive and defensive tackle on the eighth - grade football team. He also played Youth League baseball in Middlefield for three years, playing first base.
He played trumpet in the band, loved all sports and enjoyed art and sculpting. He enjoyed playing cars and loved his dogs, as well as playing Nintendo.
Survivors include his parents, his brother, Cory; paternal grandparents Raymond and Ida Blair of West Farmington; and maternal grandparents Reuben and Nancy Finnell of Kent and Shirley Hart of Ravenna.
He was preceded in death by a great - grandmother, Velta Moats, and an uncle, Allen Blair.
Service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Russell Golden Rule Funeral Service, 15670 W. High St., Middlefield. Pastor D. Ray Mullet of Maple View Church, Burton, will officiate. Burial will be in Overlook cemetery, Parkman Township.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
The Trumbull County Coroner's Office will rule on the cause of death.
