Donald E. Matthews
ANDOVER - Donald E. Matthews, 53, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, at home.
Born Sept. 20, 1946, in Erie, Pa., he was the son of Clinton and Genevieve Matthews. He was a six - year area resident, and formerly resided in Youngstown.
Mr. Matthews was a member of the Church of Christ in Andover.
He was a self - employed handyman.
Survivors include three sisters, Teresa of Andover, Priscilla Coe of Waterford, Pa., and Nelda Boratyn of Springboro, Pa.; and two brothers, Paul C. and Wayne, both of Andover.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial service is 2 p.m. Sunday at the Holiday Campgrounds Club House, Pymatuning Lake Rd., Andover. The Rev. Bob Gear will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Matthews family, c/o Wayne Matthews, P.O. Box 1223, Andover, 44003.
Arrangements are being handled by Blessing Cremation Center, Mentor.

Brooks `Dick' Milgate
CHARDON - Brooks Richard Milgate Jr., 75, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at Geauga Regional Hospital, Claridon Township.
Born Feb. 21, 1924, in Chardon, he was the son of Brooks R. and Christine (Burkeholder) Milgate Sr. He was a lifelong Chardon resident.
A 1943 graduate of Chardon High School, where he had been active in football, baseball and Thespians, Mr. Milgate attended the former Fenn College, now Cleveland State University. He was a member of Pilgrim Christian Church, and had formerly been active in a number of Chardon area organizations, including the JayCees, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, Ruby Chapter of Order of Eastern Star, Boy Scouts, and the "Summer Theatre" acting group.
An avid sports fan, he enjoyed fishing, especially in Canada. He loved his God and studied the Bible.
Survivors include his wife, Delphine (Brothers), whom he wed July 10, 1947, in Chardon; two daughters, Betsy Cahill of East Amherst, N.Y., and Heather Milgate of Westlake; a son, Donald, of Seattle, Wash.; seven grandchildren, Skyeler, Hobson, Graham and Nolan Milgate, Megan, Erin and Cori Cahill; three sisters, Joanne Koehler of Lilburn, Ga., Patricia Holp of Concord and Janet Shoda of Charlotte, N.C.; and a brother, Thomas of Chardon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, John.
Service is 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon, with the Rev. Robert Penrod of Pilgrim Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Chardon Municipal cemetery.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Russell A. Newell
GENEVA - Russell A. Newell, 71, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, after battling cancer for several months.
Born May 8, 1928, in Conneaut, he was the son of Clayton and Melva (Jones) Newell. He had lived in Geneva since 1943.
An Army veteran, Mr. Newell had worked as a machine operator for Geneva Metal Wheel for 15 years, at True Temper for 11 years, and also at R.W. Sidley. He was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and enjoyed woodworking, a good game of pool, exchanging jokes, and spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Bettie Anne (Miller), whom he wed Oct. 16, 1960, in Geneva; five daughters, Deborah Brelo of Canton, Veronica Gersin and Sandra Mack of Geneva, Valerie Stough of Ashtabula and Dawn Breedlove of Windsor; a son, Robert Glover, of Fort Myers, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; three great - grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Alexander of Geneva; and David Slocum of Geneva, whom the Newells raised as a son.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, James Stevenson; and two brothers, Jack Stevenson and George McCumber.
Service is 11 a.m. Friday at the Behm Family Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 175 S. Broadway, Geneva. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery, Geneva.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Irene P. Nosse
HAMBDEN TOWNSHIP - Irene P. Nosse, 70, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at Geauga Regional Hospital, Claridon Township.
Born July 11, 1929, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Frank and Mary (Zakrajsek) Vidrch.
A homemaker, she was a member of No. 5 SNPJ Lodge; AMLA Modern Crusadors No. 45; Progressive Women No. 1; and Slovenian Womens Union No. 68, Fairport Harbor. She enjoyed reading and volunteering at the library.
Survivors include her husband, Anthony, whom she wed Sept. 5, 1959, at St. Patrick's Church, Thompson; daughters Marie of Hambden Township and Rosalie Stoltz of Middlefield; sons Matt and Greg of Hambden Township; and a sister, Ruth Ash of Leroy Township.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mass is 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 16550 Rock Creek Road, Thompson. The Rev. Paul Smith will be the celebrant. Burial will be in All Souls cemetery, Chardon.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

John Stewart Westcott
ASHTABULA - John Stewart Westcott, 46, of Cardinal Drive died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at University Hospitals, Cleveland, following a massive stroke.
Born July 21, 1953, in Columbus, he was the son of Edwin R. and Marion (Stewart) Westcott. He had lived in the Ashtabula area for 16 years.
Mr. Westcott graduated from Jackson High School in Jackson, N.J. He was a technician at Bailey Transportation Products in Conneaut.
An Army veteran, he served during the Vietnam War.
He loved books, reading and enjoyed programming computers.
Survivors include his wife, Aecha (Chong); two sons, Taesa and Tae Chong, both of Ashtabula; a sister, Penny Ellis of Jefferson; a brother, Russell J. Westcott of Jefferson; a granddaughter; and his father of Jefferson.
He was preceded in death by his mother and a brother, Douglas.
Service is 11 a.m. Thursday at the Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Duck Young Kang, pastor of the Korean Church officiating. Burial will be in Lulu Falls cemetery, Kingsville, with the Ashtabula County United Veterans Council conducting military rites.
Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 10 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made to Mr. Westcott's family.

Charles E. Brown
CHARDON - Charles E. Brown, 43, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000.
The son of William H. and Faye (Lloyd) Burnett, he was born March 19, 1956, in Euclid.
A lifelong Chardon resident, he had been night lead man for Giant Eagle in Chardon for 10 years. Before that he worked for Golden Dawn in Middlefield.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 2261 and Local 880 UFCW. He enjoyed watching football, gardening and farming.
Survivors include his mother of Middlefield Township; his father of Euclid; a son, Joshua Moyers of Cleveland; a sister, Marcie Brown of Chardon; a brother, Cory Burnett of Middlefield Township; and two nephews.
Service is 11 a.m. Monday at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St. (Route 44), with the Rev. Robert Penrod of the Pilgrim Christian Church in Chardon officiating.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Chardon Municipal cemetery.

Charles R. Day
LYNDHURST - Charles R. Day, 78, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000.
For years regarded as Cleveland's premier radio newsman for years, he later was one of area industry's most effective spokesmen with the Ohio Bell Telephone Co.
During his 28 years as a broadcaster, he covered many major news events. He was sent to Austria in 1956 by WGAR Radio to cover the rush of refugees into the country during the Hungarian revolt. In 1959, he accompanied Vice President Richard M. Nixon to the Soviet Union when Nixon engaged in the historic kitchen debate with Soviet leader Nikita Kruschev.
Mr. Day was the first newsman to interview former Browns head coach Paul Brown after he was fired by Art Modell in 1963. He reported from the scene of the Hough riots in the 1960s and interviewed countless celebrities. He also reported on both Sam Sheppard murder trials.
Mr. Day earned numerous news awards, and in 1988, was inducted into the Press Club of Cleveland's Journalism Hall of Fame.
He was born into a family of 10 children. He was hired by WGAR in 1943 and spent a brief time in television in the early 1950s with WEWS Channel 5, but returned to radio after three years.
He joined Ohio Bell in 1971 and served as head of media relations, retiring in 1988.
He served on the South Euclid Board of Education for 21 years and attended the Church of the Savior.
He was married for 56 years to the former Dorothy Hauselman.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Charles R. Jr. of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Robert H. of Shaker Heights; two daughters, Martha Sorohan of Ashtabula and Mary Jane Skala of Chagrin Falls; eight grandchildren; two brothers; and four sisters.
A memorial service was held Jan. 12.

Helen E. Kennedy
MONROE TOWNSHIP - Helen E. Kennedy, 83, of Middle Road, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home in Kingsville.
The daughter of Paul and Elizabeth (Kveska) Lockner, she was born March 8, 1916, in Cleveland. She had lived in the Conneaut area for 30 years.
A Baptist, Mrs. Kennedy taught Sunday school for 25 years. She was a member of the Esther Society and was vice president of the P.T.A. while living in Cleveland.
She was a member of the Ladies Aid of Monroe Township. She enjoyed reading, sewing, singing and was known for her sense of humor.
Survivors include daughters Joyce Brennan of Cherry Valley and Barbara Wade of Bay Village; sons Craig and James of Monroe Township and Robert and Donald of Harpersfield; 13 grandchildren; and five great - grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald C., and a brother, Frank.
Service is 11 a.m. Monday at the Marcy Funeral Home, a Family Care Group affiliate, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with the Rev. Jerry Webb, pastor of the Kelloggsville Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial will be in Kelloggsville cemetery.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made to the Animal Protective League. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Mary E. Green
ASHTABULA ­ Mary E. Green, 88, of E. 51st Street, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at her home.
The daughter of Jacob and Cora E. (Hickox) Vote, she was born April 3, 1911 in Egeland, N.D. She had been a resident of Ashtabula County most of her life.
A homemaker, she enjoyed her family, and best liked being a mother and grandmother.
Survivors include sons Earnest and Clarence of Ashtabula, and Douglas of Dunnellon, Fla.; daughters, Ellen West of Loveland, Colo., Joyce Schlieper of Northeast, Pa., and Mary Lou Rushton of Anderson, S.C.; 20 grandchildren; 25 great - grandchildren; and three great - great - grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John; sons John Jr., David, and Donald; a daughter in infancy; brothers Roy, Ben, Clark, Floyd, and Archie; and sister Nellie Baker.
Service is 1 p.m. Monday at the Ross - Billman Funeral Home, 526 Prospect Road, with the Rev. Shane Nanney of the East Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Edgewood cemetery.
Calling hours are 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made to the family.

Edith M. Childress
PAINESVILLE - Edith M. (Church) Childress, 66, formerly of Mentor, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Lake Med Nursing and Rehabilitation in Painesville Township.
The daughter of Carman and Rose Ellen Church, she was born March 24, 1933, in Flatwoods, Ky.
A homemaker and avid collector, she enjoyed crocheting, decorating and crafts.
She was a member of the Mentor Church of God.
Survivors include her husband, Otis, of Painesville; three daughters, Joan Childress and Lisa Childress, both of Painesville, and Melinda Childress of Willoughby; three sisters, Virginia "Jo" Westerman of Westerville, Laverne Ingles of Zanesville and Wilma Ingles of LaRue; and a brother, Don W. Church of Mount Vernon.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Service is 11 a.m. today at Mentor Church of God, 8250 Garfield Road, Mentor.
Burial will be in Mentor cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Edith M. Childress Memorial Fund, c/o of the family.

Jean A. Kaczur
CORTLAND - Jean A. Kaczur, 76, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at the Cortland Quality Care Nursing Center.
The daughter of Joseph and Ethel (Vandervort) Michel, she was born May 31, 1923, in Mineral Ridge, Ohio. She was a lifelong area resident of Cortland.
She was a 1941 graduate of Mineral Ridge High School, and was a member of Johnston Federated United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Kaczur was a homemaker who enjoyed knitting, playing Scrabble and working puzzles.
Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl L. Tomlinson of Johnston Township, Ohio; two sons, Alan A. of Cortland, and Garry R. of Sugar Hill, Ga.; and two grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew, whom she married June 19, 1943; her sister Nye Noel; and her half - sister Eleanor Howard.
Service is 11 a.m. Monday at Baumgardner Funeral Home, a Family Care Group affiliate, 8569 Main St., Kinsman. The Rev. Thomas D. Snyder, pastor of Johnston Federated United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Crown Hill Burial Park, Vienna, Ohio.
Calling hours are 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Michael T. Protic
ROAMING SHORES - Michael Toma Protic, 47, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Cleveland Metro Hospital.
The son of Toma and Margo (Figge) Protic, he was born June 25, 1952, in Chicago.
He attended Cleveland Heights High School and had worked as a nursing home caregiver.
Survivors include his mother of Roaming Shores; his wife, Laura Jean (Drabik) of Westland, Mich.; daughters Candace Protic of Texas and Selena Protic of Westland; sons Christopher of Texas and Lucas of Westland, Mich.; grandchildren Emily, Heidi and Hunter; and sisters Erica Knostman - Hogan of Chicago and Robin Protic of Bedford Heights.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1965 and his stepfather, Werner Argens, on Sept. 2, 1998.
Services will be private. No calling hours will be observed.
