Berdell A. Seibert
CONNEAUT - Berdell A. Seibert, 93, of Woodworth Road, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital.
The daughter of John and Lela (Davis) Brown, she was born Nov. 13, 1906, in Bemis, W.Va., the daughter of John and Lela (Davis) Brown.
She taught school in West Virginia before moving to Conneaut when she was 18 years old. She was a 50 - year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a life member of the Academy of Friendship and the Ladies of the Moose.
She served as a Democratic precinct worker, was an avid bingo player and loved dogs.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews, including Richard Tuuri of Conneaut.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David L. Seibert, on Sept. 19, 1986; a brother, Edgar Brown; and two sisters, Rosalie Tuuri and June Wetmore.
Service is 3 p.m. Friday at the Marcy Funeral Home, a Family Care Group affiliate, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut. Tim Kraus of the Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in East Conneaut cemetery.
Calling hours at the funeral home are 2 p.m. Friday until the time of service.
Gertrude Sterling
CONNEAUT - Gertrude Sterling, formerly of Baltic Street, died on her 100th birthday Tuesday morning, Jan. 18, 2000, at Carington Park, Ashtabula, where she had been a resident since 1994.
She was born Jan. 18, 1900, in Mayville, N.Y., and had lived in Conneaut since 1919.
She owned a grocery store for 10 years in the vicinity of Salisbury and Lake roads in Conneaut. She was a member of the West Springfield, Pa., congregation of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, and the North Conneaut Garden Club.
She enjoyed gardening, especially raising African violets.
Survivors include a son Searle K. Sterling of Ashtabula; a sister, Annie Bovee of Ripley, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren, 10 great - grandchildren, and nine great - great - grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Sterling, in 1958; a daughter, Phyllis Wrisley; a son, Roger C. Sterling; six brothers and five sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Marcy Funeral Home, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, a Family Care Group affiliate, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut. Richard Emerson, of the West Ashtabula Congregation, will officiate. Burial will be in Glenwood cemetery in Conneaut.
Calling hour at the funeral home is 2 p.m. Saturday until the time of service.
John G. Gateo Sr.
ORWELL - John George Gaeto Sr., 83, of Route 322, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at Grand Valley Country Manor in Windsor Township, following an extended illness.
The son of Vincent and Mary (Bako) Gaeto, he was born Aug. 21, 1916, in Patton, Pa. He had also lived in Altoona, Pa.
A career Navy man, Mr. Gaeto retired after 33 years' service. He also served four years in civil service, in aeronautics.
He was a life member of the Altoona VFW and the National Rifle Association; and a member of the National Association of Uniformed Services.
Survivors include his wife, Jenevieve E. (Sommers); a daughter, Patricia Porta of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; a son, John G., of Sevierville, Tenn.; a sister, Netta Lorman of Chicago, Ill.; 14 grandchildren and a great - grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Dolores, in 1995; and a brother, Vincent Sr.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2700 Broad Ave., Altoona. The Rev. John Hall will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Patton.
Calling hour is 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Warren H. Replogle Funeral Home, 2636 W. Chestnut Ave., Altoona.
Charles Arthur Smith Sr.
BLOOMFIELD TWP., OH Charles Arthur (Art) Smith Sr., 84, of Bloomfield Township died at his home early Friday morning.
He was born July 9, 1919 in Warren, Ohio, the son of Charles Arthur (Charlie) and Katherine Isabelle (Crouch_ Smith Sr.
Mr. Smith was retired from the Orwell Telephone Company, a member of the Champion Church of the Nazarene, former board member of the Bloomfield - Mespo Schools for 20 years and was active in the Bloomfield Community with baseball and boyscouts. He was a big fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, enjoyed fishing, and loved working outdoors, gardening and camping.
Mr. Smith is survived by children; Charles A. Smith Jr. of Orwell, Judy A. Slusher of North Bloomfield, Ronald L. Smith of Orwell, Nancy J. Reed of Cortland, Karen S. Cunningham of Mesopotamia. Sisters; Mary Tretera of Gustavus, Helen Herbert of West Virginia, Dorothy Stevens of Kinsman, Phyllis Smith of Mecca. Brothers; Fred Smith of Gustavus, Gene Smith and Earl Smith of Farmdale, Emerson Smith of Johnson. 20 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
He is preceded by his parents, his wife of 55 years Geraldine E. Smith who preceded him on March 12, 1997, sisters; Arleen Brownlee, Evelyn Miester, and brother; Robert Smith.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at the Guerriero Funeral Home, 140 East Main Street, Orwell, Ohio with interment following in Brownwood cemetery, North Bloomfield, Ohio.
Friends will be received 1:00 to 3:00 and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home.
Peter Shovelski
ASHTABULA Peter Shovelski, 89, of S. Ridge Rd. died Thursday, October 15, 2003, at Hospice Unit at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
He retired from the Cleveland Police Department.
Survivors include his beloved wife Helen (Houser) of Ashtabula; son Peter of Austinburg; three grandchildren; and seven great - grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters, and his parents.
A private graveside service will be held at Saybrook cemetery.
No calling hours will be observed.

WARREN, OH John E. Sommerville, Sr., 58, died Friday, October 17, 2003 in Trumbull Memorial Hospital, Warren, OH. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2003, at 7:00 p.m. at the Pymatuning Community Church, 6459 St. Rt. 7, Andover, Ohio, with Pastor Steven Mickels officiating. Dorothy Arndt
ROCKFORD, Ill. - Dorothy Arndt, 87, died Sept. 16, 1999, at Asta Care Center in Rockford, Ill., where she had been a resident for the past six years.
Born April 29, 1912, in Newbury, he was a son of Ottis and Nellie Saintjohn.
She was a former resident of Mayfield Heights, Newbury from 1952 until 1976, Parma Heights until 1988 and Oklahoma for four years.
She was a former member of Newbury United Community Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Shoot of Rockford, Ill.; two sons, Harold of Columbus and Ronald of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; numerous grandchildren and great - grandchildren; and two great - great - grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold F.; a son, Gerald; and a brother, Charles Saintjohn.
Graveside service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Hill cemetery, Butternut Road, Burton.
Arrangements are being handled by the Ritondaro Funeral Home, 126 South St., Chardon.
Mary Fiala
KINGSVILLE TOWNSHIP - Creek Road resident Mary Fiala, 89, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at her home.
Born Dec. 3, 1909, in Czechoslovakia, she was a daughter of Charles and Anna Dinnebier.
She came to this country at the age of 14 and resided in Cleveland for several years before moving to Conneaut and later to Kingsville Township.
She had worked in the kitchen at Amboy Elementary School for many years, as well as the former Olsen's Bakery in North Kingsville.
Mrs. Fiala was a member of the Kingsville Presbyterian Church, the East Ashtabula Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Social Club.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing bingo and cards, bowling, cooking, baking, embroidering, sewing and polka dancing.
Survivors include two daughters, Ruth M. Dratwa of Mentor and Mary Ann Thorpe of Kingsville Township; a son, Joseph Simak of Monroe Township; 11 grandchildren; 24 great - grandchildren; 10 great - great - grandchildren; and a sister, Pauline Monroy of Las Vegas.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph Simak; her second husband, Ernest F. Fiala on June 24; a daughter, Rebecca Wheeler on July 12; a sister, Caroline Jergens; and a brother, Charles Dinnebier.
Funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Thompson - Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut, with the Rev. Jerry Webb, pastor of the Kelloggsville Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mildred Evelyn Gilson
HUNTSBURG TOWNSHIP - Mildred Evelyn Gilson, 93, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at Burton Health Care in Burton.
Born July 29, 1906, in South Newbury, she was a daughter of Hugh and Lily (Hoskins) Patch.
She married
Earl Gilson on April 7, 1924.
A lifelong area resident, she was a former waitress and chambermaid at Hotel in Chardon and factory worker at Velchek (now Flambeau) in Middlefield.
She was a member of the Parkman 55+ Club and the Troy Ladies Club.
She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery work and vegetable and flower gardening.
Survivors include a daughter, Violet Katic of Huntsburg; seven grandchildren; and several great - grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Earl; a son, Donald; a daughter, Dorothy; and a brother, Richard Patch.
Funeral is 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Russell Golden Rule Funeral Service, 15670 West High St., Middlefield, with the Rev. George Dauler, of the Orwell Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Patch Family cemetery in Troy Township.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Michael Anthony Lignetta
ASHTABULA - Michael Anthony Lignetta, 86, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, in the Hospice Unit of Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Born April 19, 1913, in Ashtabula, he was a son of Michael and Carmella (DeDomenico) Lignetta.
He was employed by Consolidated Coal and retired from State Metals and Steel Co..
He was a member of our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Lignetta was a former Little League coach; he helped to start and develop the Little League in Ashtabula. For several years, he refereed basketball and was a hard ball umpire throughout Ashtabula County.
He enjoyed his family and sports.
Survivors include a son, Anthony of Aliquippa, Pa.; three daughters, Lita Kovacs, Carol Carney and Teresa Licate of Ashtabula; seven grandchildren; four great - grandchildren; a brother, Leo of Youngstown; and a sister, Josephine Noce of Ashtabula.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by infant twin daughters; three brothers, Sam, Thomas and Carmen; and a sister, Florence Rossetti.
Funeral is 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Church, with the Rev. Michael Balash officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Guerriero Funeral Home, 1550 W. 19th St., Ashtabula.
Douglas Keith Haller
LAS VEGAS - Douglas Keith Haller, 61, died April 15, 1999, in Las Vegas, after suffering for three years from a chronic liver disease.
He was born Aug. 11, 1937.
He was a graduate of Conneaut High School and later earned a bachelor of science degree from California Western University.
He served as an Air Force pilot from 1954 to 1958. After his discharge, he worked as a field engineer for aircraft companies consulting with the air forces of Korea, Japan, Thailand and South Vietnam (the former Republic of Vietnam).
Mr. Haller spent virtually his entire adult life working to make American aircraft superior to anything else found in the world. He spent 40 years in a wide range of supervisory roles for various corporations.
He was widely published as an author of complex, focused technical papers and was a registered, professional aeronautical/aerospace engineer. He also was a certified pilot of both helicopters and fixed - wing aircraft.
As a project engineer for Fairchild Aviation, Mr. Haller led the electrical and electronic teams that helped convert the U.S. Air Force's C - 119 cargo planes into the AC - 119G Shadow gunship. The converted aircraft was necessary for the American military's nighttime missions against North Vietnamese forces along the famed Ho Chi Minh Trail.
At Grumman Aerospace, he worked on a wide variety of systems to improve the overall effectiveness of the Navy's F - 14A Tomcat fighter/interceptor, the plane most Americans recognize from the movie "Top Gun." His engineering work culminated in his being honored in 1975 at a formal Gruman dinner party.
Mr. Haller also worked for three years as manager of special projects engineering for Falcon Jet Corp. working to develop the Falcon 20 Guardian aircraft for the Coast Guard.
Before retiring, Mr. Haller worked for Computer Sciences Corp. and for the Army's Aviation Systems Command at NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif.
He was a senior member of the Society of Logistics Engineers and the Society for Technical Communication. Author of nearly 50 technical papers and reports specific to his career in aeronautical and aerospace engineering, he also was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
In 1967, he became a 32nd Degree member in the Taipei Consistory of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, four years after becoming a 3rd Degree member of the Cherry Blossom Lodge in Fukuoka, Japan.
Survivors include his wife Jacqueline and his mother, Marie Tyrvainen of Conneaut.
Adeline Hitchcock
RICHMOND TOWNSHIP - Footville - Richmond Road resident Adeline Hitchcock, 75, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at her residence in Richmond Township.
Born Aug. 9, 1924, in Cleveland, she was a daughter of Stanley M. Zmersky and Viola D. Zellinski.
She married
Gordon C. Hitchcock on Aug. 28, 1943.
A lifelong area resident, she spent more than 18 years working as a housekeeping supervisor at Pymatuning State Park, before retiring in 1984. She also wrote for the Star Beacon for many years.
She was a member of the Andover Church of Christ. She was a former president and member of the United Methodist Women at the Richmond United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Hitchcock was a member of the Richmond Hobby Club.
She enjoyed cooking, fishing and family get - togethers.
Survivors include her husband; five sons, Robert M. of Andover, Gordon M. Jr., Jerry L. and Thomas M., all of Richmond Township and William D. of Dorset; six daughters, Connie Paul of Cherry Valley Township, Linda M. Call of Linesville, Pa., Kathy J. Sweeney of Hot Springs, Va., Holly L. Brown of Louisville, Ohio, Jeanne M. Kjellman of Lakeville, Mass. and Sharon K. Corson of Richmond Township; 32 grandchildren; 14 great - grandchildren; and a sister, LaVerne Kolvisto of Ashtabula.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Stanley M. Zmersky Jr. and Michael Zmersky; and a grandson.
Funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Andover Church of Christ, with the Rev. Robert Gears officiating. Burial will be in Richmond Center cemetery.
Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
