Mary Lemponen Oliver
ASHTABULA - Mary Lemponen Oliver, 89, of E. 26th Street, died early Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at the Country Club Retirement Center, where she had been a resident the past six years.
The daughter of Albert and Blanche (Armstrong) Owen, she was born Sept. 7, 1910, in Austinburg Township. She lived most of her life in Austinburg Township, before moving to Mount Dora, Fla., in 1980. She later moved to Jacksonville, Fla., before returning to Ashtabula in 1993.
Mrs. Oliver was a teacher in the Geneva Area City Schools. She taught 32 years at the Austinburg Elementary School, retiring in 1972. She was a member of the the Ashtabula County Teachers Association and the Delta Kappa Gamma sorority.
She enjoyed painting and playing cards, especially bridge.
She is survived by four children, Donald L. of Ashtabula, David O. of Austinburg Township, Norma L. Keller of Geneva, and Phillip A. of Wisconsin; 11 grandchildren; six great - grandchildren; three brothers, William Owen of California, Ralph Owen of New Jersey, and Charles Owen of Florida; and one sister, Eleanor Bone of Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Rufus Lemponen in 1962 and Leonard Oliver in 1993; a son, James Lemponen in 1999; and a grandson, Douglas Lemponen.
Cremation took place at the Family Care Group Cremation Center. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Fleming Funeral Home Inc., a Family Care Group affiliate, 49 W. Jefferson St. The Rev. Raymond Mote will officiate. Burial of ashes will take place in Mechanicsville cemetery, Austinburg Township.
Calling hours are 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
William Robison
THOMPSON - William T. "Bud" Robison, 85, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at Heather Hill Hospital Health and Care Center, Chardon.
A lifelong Thompson resident, he was born Dec. 4, 1913, the son of Willis J. and Elizabeth (Buckley) Robison.
He graduated from Thompson High School in 1931, and dairy farmed all his life. He belonged to the Thompson Fire Department from 1943 to 1976, and was captain of the organization from 1952 to 1976.
Mr. Robison also was an avid raccoon hunter, and he played on baseball leagues in Chardon and Montville. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Survivors include a niece and two nephews, Mary Beth Bartlett of Columbia Falls, Mt. and Thomas P. and Paul Daniel Robison, both of Thompson; and a brother, Paul, also of Thompson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Thomas J.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 16550 Rock Creek Road, Thompson. The Rev. Paul Smith will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery, Thompson.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Behm Family Funeral Home, 26 River St., Madison.
Lloyd R. Hollister
ALBION - Lloyd R. Hollister, 94, formerly of Albion, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Rolling Fields Nursing Home, Conneautville, Pa.
The son of Frank and Neille Brace Hollister, he was born March 8, 1905, in Erie.
Mr. Hollister was a foreman for A.J. Frasenmayer and the McCormick Construction Co. in Erie before his retirement. He served as justice of the peace in the west county area from 1946 to 1951.
He was a member of the Albion Moose Club and the Northwestern Rod and Gun Club, and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Survivors include a son, Lloyd F. of Erie; daughters Doris Becker and Violet Ditrich, both of San Jose, Calif., Lois Emler of Phoenix, Joyce King of Albion, Joan Hites Eaton of Conneaut, Barbara Gido of Girard, Pa, Donna Knepp of Springboro, Pa., and Linda Chromik of North East, Pa.; 27 grandchildren; and several great - grandchildren and great - great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Elrose Hines Hollister, and by a granddaughter, Susan Rudler.
Service is 11a.m. Friday at the Samuel J. Steff Funeral Home, 188 East State St., Albion, with lay minister Randy Hites of the Albion Church of the Nazarene officiating. Internment will be in Lakeside cemetery in Erie.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Helen Patricia Goodell
SARASOTA - Helen Patricia Goodell, 77, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000.
She was born April 24, 1992, in Loda, Ill. She earned a bachelor's degree from Illinois State University, a master's degree in elementary supervision and administration, and a doctorate in curriculum and teaching from Columbia University.
She taught in Alaska, Illinois and New York before retiring in 1967.
A a part - time instructor at Teachers College, Columbia University, she also taught in the College of Education at Kent State University, and was retired professor emerita from Lock Haven State University.
She also visited schools in the British West Indies, in England, and in Moscow and Leningrad with the Research Center for the Study of Socialist Education.
In addition to teaching, Miss Goodell served two terms as acting director of international education and was coordinator of the British exchange student and faculty programs between Lock Haven State and Nottingham University.
She studied at the University of London and supervised American students in London. Her professional memberships included Pi Lambda Theta, life membership in Kappa Delta Pi, and Phi Delta Kappa.
As a life member of the Nature Conservancy and the Iroquois County Historical Society, she was instrumental in the preservation of a virgin tall - grass prairie plot in Loda, dedicated to the memory of her parents and the pioneers who crossed the tall - grass prairie.
While living in Sarasota, she was a member of Sarasota Audubon; a life member, trail guide, docent, and member of the board of directors and advisory board of the Crowley Museum and Nature Center, and served six years on the board of directors of the Sarasota Area Housing Inc.
Miss Goodell was an Asolo Angel, a subscriber and friend of Florida Studio Theatre, a member of the Sarasota Opera Guild, a member of the Ringling Museum of Art and of the Selby Botanical Gardens, a friend of the Selby Public Library, and a member of the Century Foundation Corinthian Club of Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
She was a life member of the Pontesbury Bells in St. George's Church in Shropshire, England, and a member and former moderator at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Sarasota, Fla.
Survivors include one brother, Addison of Ashtabula; one niece, Elizabeth; two nephews, Addison IV and Robert Thomas; and a great - grand niece and nephew.
Services will be private.

Glenn S. Fisher
MONTVILLE TOWNSHIP - Glenn S. Fisher, 63, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000 at home.
The son of Arthur P. and Freda (Fobes) Fisher, he was born June 24, 1936, in Burton. He lived in Chardon Village before moving to Montville 14 years ago.
An Army veteran, he was discharged in 1958.
Mr. Fisher was co - owner of the Tri County Camp Inn in Montville.
He also worked many years in the banking industry. He was a founder of First County Bank, Chardon, and was president of the Geauga County National Bank/Bank One in Chardon and also of National City Bank in Chardon.
He also had worked at Peoples Savings and Loan in Ashtabula, Citizens Banking Co. in Rock Creek, Jefferson Savings and Loan in Jefferson and North American Rockwell's Federal Credit Union in Ashtabula.
He was a member of the Church of St. Mary in Chardon Village, and he belonged to the Chardon Rotary Club, where he served as a host father for the club's Foreign Exchange Student program.
Mr. Fisher was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, where he served as treasurer of the Geauga Unit, and he was a past treasurer of the Salvation Army in Geauga County.
He served 20 years as a director of the Boy Scouts of America and was a past chairman of the Geauga County United Way.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; daughter Cheryl (Rory) Breedlove of Hambden Township; sons Leonard of Hickory, N. C., and Arthur of Charlotte, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Jesse, Misty, Jennifer, Nicholas, Jamie, Sheonna, Kayla and Christopher; sister, Ardythe Ashley of Wooster; and brothers William of Middlefield and Phillip of Marlborough, Mass.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen; a sister, Donna Ross; and a brother, James.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Church of St. Mary, 401 North St., Chardon Village. The Rev. Thomas Gilles will be the celebrant. Burial will be in All Souls cemetery in Chardon Township.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon Village.

Thomas J. Mahoney
CLEVELAND - Thomas J. Mahoney, 78, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000.
Mr. Mahoney was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mary (Cragon); sons John, Thomas and Nicholas; daughters Mary Hladky, Margaret O'Brien, and Eileen Harshman; 17 grandchildren; and brothers John P., William F. and Joseph.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, baby Mary in infancy, and by one brother, Robert.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Ascension Church, 14040 Puritas, Cleveland. Internment will be in Holy Cross cemetery.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Chambers Funeral Home, 4420 Rocky River Drive, Cleveland.

M. Jane Rice
TUCSON - M. Jane Rice, 78, of North King Road, Tucson, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at her home following a lengthy illness.
She was born March 14, 1921, in Williamsfield.
She was a 1939 graduate of Andover High School and attended Miami University in Oxford. She graduated from the Youngstown School of Nursing in 1944.
A lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II, she served in the United States, the Philippines and Japan.
She married
Joseph E. Rice on July 4, 1950.
Survivors include a daughter, Debra J. Rice of Tucson; a son, David G. Rice of Clinton, Mass; a sister, Betty Gay Morse of Fort Myers, Fla.; three grandchildren; and one great - grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Audley V. and Lottie (Martin) Gay; her husband on Dec. 30, 1998; and two brothers, Gordon M. Gay and John A. "Jack" Gay.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date with scattering of ashes in the Catalina Foothills.
Dorothy M. Robinson
DURHAM, N.C. - Dorothy McMahon Robinson, 76, a former Ashtabula resident, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Northwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Durham.
Mrs. Robinson was born in Columbia, S.C., and reared in Ashtabula. She also lived in Edinboro, Pa. and south Texas, before moving to Durham in 1992.
She attended Beaver College and worked at several professions. A homemaker, she also worked in real estate and sales, and always motivated and inspired others by her good example.
In her later years, she traveled to Mexico for extended visits. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her husband, John; sons Calvin of Durham, Scott of Ashtabula, Marc of Kutztown, Pa., and Quentin of Pittsburgh; a daughter, Annette Brun of Durham; nine grandchildren; brothers George of Knoxville, Tenn., Bert of Ypsilanti, Mich., and Joe McMahon of San Antonio; and a sister, Beverly Regas of Rocky River.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Jan. 21, at 3 p.m. at Woodstone Clubhouse at Croasdaile Farms in Durham.

Andrew L. Gilbert
ASHTABULA - Andrew Leon Gilbert, 40, of West 49th Street died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at the Cleveland Clinic.
Born May 31, 1959, in Ashtabula, he was a lifelong city resident.
He attended Ashtabula High School and enjoyed cars, wrestling and being with his children.
Mr. Gilbert is survived by a son, Aubrey James of Ashtabula; a daughter, Vanessa DiMare of Ashtabula; his mother, Effie Boswell of Ashtabula; his father, the Rev. Thomas Gilbert of Sheffield Township; two brothers, James of Rainvillers, France, and John; and two sisters, Sheila Hood and Rosa Whitted, both of Ashtabula.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Leo Lipsey.
Funeral is 7 p.m. Friday at the Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Alfred Lewis of Union Missionary Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in Chestnut Grove cemetery.
Calling hour is Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

John V. Ryan
ASHTABULA - Mass of Christian Burial for John V. Ryan will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, 3330 Lake Ave. The Rev. Philip Miller will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery, Carpenter Road, Saybrook Township.
The location of the service is a change from what was previously announced.
Mr. Ryan, 70, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at the U.S. Veterans Care Facility in Sandusky.
No calling hours will be observed.

Ruth Mildred Jury
CONNEAUT - Ruth Mildred Jury, 81, of Harbor Street, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital. She had been ill a year.
The daughter of Joseph W. and Ruth I (Carns) Young, she was born Dec. 1, 1918, in Clearfield, Pa.
A Conneaut resident since 1941, Mrs. Jury was a homemaker. She enjoyed caring for her family, knitting, crocheting, embroidering and working crossword puzzles.
Survivors include her mother of Conneaut; sons William L., Thomas I. Jr., Robert J., David C., and Kenneth E., all of Conneaut; 13 grandchildren and six great - grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father; her husband, Thomas I. Jury, on May 6, 1987; a grandson, Joseph E. Jury, in 1980; and a great - grandson Michael in 1992.
Service is 2 p.m. Thursday at the Marcy Funeral Home, a Family Care Group affiliate, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut. The Rev. Ash Welch of East Conneaut United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in East Conneaut cemetery.
Calling hours at the funeral home are 12:30 p.m. Thursday until the time of service.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Conneaut Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Ruth A. Jenzen
CONNEAUT - Ruth A. Jenzen, 91, of Edgewood Drive, died Monday Jan. 17, 2000, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
The daughter of James O. and Gertrude (Potter) Vosseller, she was born Sept. 22, 1908, in North Kingsville.
A lifelong area resident, she was a graduate of Ashtabula High School and received her nurse's training at Ashtabula General Hospital. She worked as a practical nurse for 17 years at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home and retired from Brown Memorial Hospital.
She was a member of First Baptist Church and was to have received an award for perfect attendance this Sunday.
She enjoyed walking, baking, sewing and loved all animals.
Survivors include her husband, Joyce Neal of Conneaut; a son, William F. of Conneaut; six grandchildren and seven great - grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Fred, on Feb. 12, 1981.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, 370 State St., Conneaut. The Rev. Todd Regester, assisted by the Rev. Olland Cole, will officiate. Graveside service will be held in Center cemetery Friday at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours.

Randall Ferguson
BAD AXE, Mich. - Randall "Randy" Ferguson, 35, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at his home.
The son of Morris Ferguson and Nancy (Cann) Watson, he was born Aug. 28, 1964, in Bellevue.
He had been employed at US Manufacturing in Bad Axe, and enjoyed fishing, citizen band radios and small electronic work.
Survivors include his father, of Conneaut; his mother of Smithville, Va.; his wife, the former Janet Best, whom he married
May 12, 1984, at St. Mary's Church in Conneaut; a son, Jeremy of Bad Axe; a daughter, Jessica of Bad Axe; a brother, Craig of Indiana; sisters Wendy Ferguson and Jill Grant, both of Iowa; and his stepmother, Irene Ferguson of Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Church, 480 State St., Conneaut. The Rev. Raymond Thomas will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery.

Maria Louise Stillman
PAINESVILLE - Maria Louise Stillman, 42, died Jan. 9, 2000, at her home.
The daughter of Neil Warren Stillman and Marian (Williams) Stillman Gibson, she was born April 23, 1957, in Painesville, where she was a lifelong resident.
Miss Stillman was a 1975 graduate of Madison High School and received her nursing degree from Cleveland Metro School of Nursing in 1979. She enrolled in a masters degree program in art therapy at Ursuline College.
She was a member of Greater Grace Church in Mentor.
Survivors include her mother of Mesa, Ariz.; her stepfather, A.W. Gibson of Mesa; and a sister, Jacqueline L. Stillman of Mesa.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Service is 3:30 p.m. Thursday, at the Greater Grace Church, Hart Prospect Building, 8492 Prospect Ave., Mentor, with the Rev. William Alderson officiating.
There will be no visitation.
Contributions may be made to the Greater Grace Church.
