Esther G. Dilly
PERRY TOWNSHIP - Esther G. Dilly, 76, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at the Mentor Way Care Center.
The daughter of Emery and Zona (Zickefoose) Hinkle, she was born Sept. 18, 1923, in Alton, W. Va. She had lived in Perry Township since 1952 and had also lived in Mayville, N.Y.
She retired in 1980 from the coning department of I.R.C. Fibers Corp. in Painesville after 28 years of service. She was a member of Perry United Methodist Church, Blue Star Mothers, Perry - Madison Senior Citizens Center.
She enjoyed gardening and cats.
She is survived by sons Richard Myers of Lakeland, Fla., Samuel D. Myers of Rock Creek and Benjamin K. Myers of Concord; daughters Mary Ann Brown of Mayville, Esther A. "Billie" Mellon of Austinburg, Zona L. James of Painesville, Carol J. Phillips of Pontiac, Ill., and Ginny S. Dilly of Perry; 18 grandchildren; 28 great - grandchildren; one great - great - grandchild; and a sister, Alice Lett of Madison.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Brady E. Dilly in 1990; daughter, Dorothy Mae Judd; her parents, Emery and Zona (Zickefoose) Hinkle; a brother, Lyle Hinkle; and a sister, Lois Hinkle.
Service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Spear - Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Ave., Painesville, with the Rev. Joy Blainey of Perry United Methodist Church officiating.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Hugh Dennis Smith
ASHTABULA - Hugh Dennis Smith, 60, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at the Cleveland Clinic.
He was born June 22, 1939, and was married
to the former Janice Ann Whittingham, a former Ashtabula resident.
An Army veteran, he attained the rank of command sergeant major. He was a retired Cleveland police detective.
He is survived by his wife; three stepchildren, Grant A. and Bruce E. Wolfe and Carol A. Osburn, all of Columbus; six grandchildren, Jessica, Adam and Haley Osburn and Quinten and Payton Wolfe; brothers Brother Charles Terrence of Gilmour Academy, Joseph N. of Cambria, Calif., and Kevin of Kokomo, Ind.; and sisters Maureen Helen Smith of Ashtabula, Veronica Pauer of Cambria, and Teresa Glick of Kokomo.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Cleveland. Internment will be in Holy Cross cemetery.
Calling hours are 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Schuster - Straker - O'Conner Funeral Home, 5904 Ridge Road, Parma.

Florence A. Meola
MAYFIELD HEIGHTS - Florence A. (Buonomo) Meola, 92, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000.
The daughter of Rose and Anthony Buonoma, she was born in Ashtabula.
Survivors include a son, Sylvester J. Jr.; daughters Geraldine Thomas - Moore and Barbara J. Rendina; 12 grandchildren; 10 great - grandchildren; and a brother, Tony Buonoma of Ashtabula.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Sylvester J. Sr.; a grandson, Robert Haberecht; three brothers, John, Lewis and Harry Buonoma; and two sisters, Theresa Severa and Mary Donatone.
Services were Thursday at St. Gregory the Great Church, South Euclid. Burial was in Lake View cemetery, Cleveland.

Matthew W. Ambrose
KINSMAN - Matthew W. Ambrose, 11 months, the son of William G. Ambrose and Cindy M. (McFarland) Vilagi, of State Road N.E., died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at UPMC - Horizon Hospital, Greenville, Pa.
He was born Dec. 4, 1998, in Youngstown.
Survivors include his parents; a brother, Billy E. Ambrose; three sisters, Heather M. and Makenzie L. Ambrose, and Alissa M. Vilagi; and paternal grandparents, Harold and Mary Lee Weese of Kinsman.
He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Charles and Esther McFarland.
Service is 11 a.m. today at Baumgardner Funeral Home, a Family Care Group affiliate, 8569 Main St., Kinsman, with the Rev. Kenneth Kubichek of Kinsman United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Kinsman cemetery.

Vina Virginia Ball
ASHTABULA - Vina Virginia Ball, 70, of Norwood Drive, died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Born Sept. 15, 1929, in Wendel, W.Va., she was the daughter of Roy and Flora (Moyers) Mayle.
A lifelong area resident, she retired in 1984 from Rockwell, Ashtabula. She enjoyed embroidery painting, watching soap operas and spending time with her family. She was a past member of Eagles Auxiliary 1463; and a member of Pentecostal Church, Ashtabula.
Survivors include her former husband, Ray Ball, of Ashtabula; sons Ray and Harold "Joe" of Ashtabula, and Gary of Kingsville; daughters Virginia Newsome and Roberta Hale of Ashtabula, and Rosa M. Peet of Maple Heights; brothers James, Doug and Ken of Ashtabula; sisters Winnie Marple and Adeline Bort of Conneaut, Shirley Shipbaugh and Romona Thompson of Ashtabula, Linda Schelgo and Liz Smith of Texas; 11 grandchildren; and eight great - grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sons Roy Jr., Troy and William; and stepson Roy Beaver.
Service is 11 a.m. Thursday at Burton Funeral Home, 1329 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Kenneth Roberts, Ashtabula Pentecostal Church, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Anne Santry
PAINESVILLE - Anne Santry, 95, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at Painesville Nursing Home.
Born July 8, 1905, in Cleveland, she lived there until moving to Ashtabula in 1964. She had lived in Painesville for the past two years.
A homemaker, she was a member of St. Joseph Church, Ashtabula.
Survivors include her daughter - in - law, Carole Reddig of Stow; and three granddaughters, Diana Ania, Heather Rasocco and Renee Koch.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, in 1964; and a son, Harry Jr., in 1965.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph cemetery, Ashtabula.
Arrangements are by the Potti Funeral Home, 538 Fifth St., Fairport Harbor.
Nancy Jane Walters
ROAMING SHORES - Nancy Jane Walters, 62, died Nov. 14, 1999, at her Roaming Shores home.
Born July 22, 1937, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Albert Alexander and Olive Elizabeth (Gardiner) Bigalke.
She married
her husband, naval Capt. Ray A. Walters, on July 28, 1958, in Cleveland Heights.
A homemaker, Mrs. Walters moved to Roaming Shores six years ago from Baltimore County in Maryland.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Jefferson.
She was a member of the Cleveland Art Museum, and she volunteered with the American Red Cross, assisting returning Vietnam War veterans in California hospitals. An avid reader, when her husband, a dentist, was stationed in Florida, she volunteered with a local literacy program.
Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Padale and Veronica Iyer, both of Roaming Shores; a son, Lt. Col. Eric Walters of Virginia Beach, Va.; two grandchildren, Pallavi Iyer and Olivia Padale; and a sister, Mary Knierman of Cleveland Heights.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Funeral is 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 89 East Satin St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Fred Grimm officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview cemetery in Cleveland.
The family will receive friends after the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
Ray O. Wright
ASHTABULA - Ray O. Wright, 85, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at Carington Park, Ashtabula.
Born July 18, 1914, in Girard, Pa., he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Wright. He had lived in Bellevue for 25 years, moving from Conneaut.
Mr. Wright was employed for 31 years by the former Nickel Plate Railroad. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 286, and Loyal Order of Moose No. 472. He was a Cleveland Indians fan and enjoyed working crossword puzzles.
Survivors include two sisters, Grace Elaine Sullivan of Concord, Calif., and Nanette Robbins of Dallas, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pearl; and a brother, Elmer "Dutch" Wright.
Service is 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Thompson - Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut, with Tim Krause, pastor of the Conneaut Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood cemetery.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Joseph Vespe
CONNEAUT - Joseph Vespe, 82, of Parrish Road died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
A lifelong Conneaut resident, he was born there July 19, 1917, the son of Carmen and Sylvia DeStephona Vespe.
Mr. Vespe was an engineer for the former Nickel Plate and Norfolk & Western railroads for 37 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Church.
His hobbies included golf, bowling and spending time with family.
Survivors include his wife, the former Lillian Tobias, to whom he was married
61 years; two daughters, Peggy Moore of Beaver, Pa., and Sandy Stewart of Aurora; two sons, Joseph A. and James C., both of Conneaut; 14 grandchildren; 12 great - grandchildren; a sister, Marian Magliere of Williamsburg, Va.; and three brothers, Vincent of Albuquerque, N.M., Ben of Euclid and Anthony of Tarpon Springs, Fla.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and John Vespe; and a sister, Amelia Forsty.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Church, Conneaut. The Rev. John Summers will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville.
There will be no calling hours.
Contributions in memory of Mr. Volpe may be given to St. Mary's Church or Conneaut Station Three Rescue Squad.

Helen Febel
EAGLEVILLE - Helen Febel, 88, of Water Street, died Friday, Jan 14, 2000, at
UHHS Memorial Hospital of Geneva.
Born Sept. 26, 1911, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Frederick and Susanna (Nadich) Gutwein and had been an Austinburg Township resident for the past 54 years.
She married
Adam Febel on July 9, 1932, in Cleveland.
She was the kitchen manager and cook for Austinburg and Geneva schools for 23 years, retiring in 1973.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Geneva, and enjoyed cooking, crocheting, and bowling.
Survivors include three children, Peter C. of Eagleville, Michael F. of Madison, and Susann E. Newman of Wilmington; nine grandchildren; and 17 great - grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Adam in 1992; daughter Katherine J. Gaylord 1991; three sisters, Elizabeth, Susanna, and Salomia Gutwein; a brother, Peter Gutwein; a half brother, Frederick Gutwein; and a half sister, Katherine Gutwein.
Service is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, 811 S. Broadway, Geneva, with the Rev. Charles Altoff officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Fleming Funeral Home Inc., a Family Care Group affiliate, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

Robert M. Hanson
GIRARD, Pa. Robert M. Hanson, 86, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at St. Vincent Health Center, Erie, Pa.
The son of Emmett Louis and Dima Ella Marsh Hanson, he was born April 20, 1913, in Girard.
Mr. Hanson graduated from Rice Avenue Union High School in 1931 and from the University of Pittsburgh in 1936.
He was secretary for the Borough of Girard for more than 30 years, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Girard, where he was a former trustee. He also was a former member of the Erie County Local Governmental Secretaries Association, the Pennsylvania State Local Governmental Secretaries Association, the Erie County Association of Boroughs, and the Girard - Lake City Exchange Club.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Sherman) Hanson; a daughter, Elizabeth M. of Olmsted Township; four sons, Charles S. of Conneaut, Robert M. Jr. of Edinboro, Christopher L. of Girard, and William E. of Tucson, Ariz.; two step - sons, James P. Shollenberger of Girard and Sherman Shollenberger of Lake City. Pa.; two step - daughters, Roberta Starks of Tampa, Fla. and Sue Van Horn of Honesdale, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; four step - grandchildren; and a great - granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean (Smith) Hanson; his parents; a sister, Lucile H. Miller; and a brother, Dale.
Services were held at the convenience of the family, with internment in Girard cemetery.

Thomas 'Tim' Hubbard
ASHTABULA - Thomas "Tim" Huntington Hubbard, 76, of Schenley Avenue, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at his home.
The son of Holland and Eleanor (Seymour) Hubbard, he was born in Toledo.
Mr. Hubbard was a resident of Ashtabula for most of his life.
He worked in the securities business with Hayden Miller, Parker Hunter, Murch, Wheat First Butcher, and Singer.
He was a trustee of Erie Insurance Exchange, Erie, Pa. and a partner in the Markko Vineyard, Conneaut. He attended the Choate School in Wallingford, Conn., and Hobart College, Geneva, N.Y.
He served in the U. S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Hubbard was an active member of the community, particularly of the Ashtabula Area Museum and Historical Society. His main emphasis was on the formation of the Hubbard House Underground Railroad Museum on Walnut Boulevard.
Survivors include his wife Mary "Cissy" Cochran Hubbard; a daughter Mary "Polly"; a son, Lucius "Luke"; and a step - daughter, Elizabeth Flauto.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Hubbard Robinson Naslund.
Arrangements for a memorial service are incomplete at this time.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ashtabula Area Museum and Historical Society with a designation for the Hubbard House Underground Railroad Museum, the Marine Museum or the Ashtabula Arts Center.
Aini M. Ritanen
CONNEAUT - Aini M. Ritanen, formerly of Mill Street, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Youngstown.

John V. Ryan
SANDUSKY - John V. Ryan, 70, died Thursday Jan. 13, 2000, in the Griffin Care Facility, Sandusky.
Born June 9, 1929, in Ashtabula, he was the son of Michael J. and Mary K. (Waldron) Ryan.
A 1948 Ashtabula High School graduate, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Ryan was a member of the St. Joseph Church, Ashtabula.
Survivors include four daughters, Renee Spencer of Ashtabula, Jaclin Ryan of Philadelphia, Pa., Kelly and Shannon Ryan of Wooster; two sons, Sean Daniel of Knoxville, Tenn., and Michael of Wooster; a brother, James of Gatlinburg, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and a sister, Theresa Brennen of Sun City, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Carol Niemi; and a brother, Joseph.
Service is 10 a.m. Thursday in the Chapel of the St. Joseph cemetery, Carpenter Road, Saybrook Township with the Rev. Philip Miller officiating.
No calling hours will be observed.
