Verna B. Goodman
WILLOUGHBY - Verna B. Goodman, 91, of Breckenridge Village in Willoughby, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Lake West Hospital in Willoughby.
Mrs. Goodman was born in Louisville, the daughter of Marion and Anna (Slutz) Buchman.
A retired elementary school teacher, she taught in Conneaut, Justus and South Euclid.
She was a member of the South Euclid Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Donald L. of Painesville, and Robert L. of Westerville; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by parents; her husband, Leroy J. Goodman, on April 6, 1988; and a sister, Elva Warstler.
Graveside service is 11 a.m. Saturday at Union Lawn cemetery in Navarre. The Rev. Paul R. Crooks will officiate.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Breckenridge Chapel, with the Rev. Rod Funk officiating.
There will be no calling hours.

Donald D. Lyons
ASHTABULA - Donald D. Lyons, 59, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at home, following a battle with cancer.
Born Aug. 11, 1940, in Cleveland, he was the son of Donald M. and Florence R. (Bradley) Lyons. He lived most of his life in Ashtabula.
Mr. Lyons worked at Molded Fiber Glass Premier Plant since 1994. He was a past member of the First Church of God, and his hobbies included woodworking, cars and collecting model trains.
Survivors include his wife, Rosa Lee, whom he wed April 6, 1964; three sons, Dennis and Timothy of Ashtabula and Scott of Conneaut; two daughters, Dawn Lyons and Kelly Sairin, both of Ashtabula; two brothers, Dale of California and Keith of Illinois; two sisters, June of Illinois and Cheryl of Iowa; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Friday at the Zaback - Czup Funeral Home, 500 Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with Pastor David J. Adams officiating.
There will be no calling hours.

MaeBelle E. Otto
JEFFERSON - MaeBelle E. Otto, 89, of Lenox - New Lyme Road, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Austinburg Rehabilitation Center, where she had been a patient for the past 2 1/2 months.
Born Jan. 24, 1910, in New Lyme Township, she was the daughter of Merle and Millie (Brockway) Hodge. A lifelong Ashtabula County resident, she had lived in Jefferson for the past 43 years.
Mrs. Otto was chief clerk for the title department of the Ashtabula County Clerk of Courts for 16 years, retiring in 1977. She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, where she was active with the Church Belles. She was on one of the Rotary teams and was attendance keeper.
She enjoyed dancing, crocheting, growing indoor plants and baking. She was also a member of Ashtabula Moose Lodge.
Survivors include three sons, Gale F. Sr. and James R. of Jefferson, and Donald W. of Ashtabula; a daughter, Dorothy L. Keel of Ashtabula; 23 grandchildren; 25 great - grandchildren; and four great - great - grandchildren; two sisters, Julia Williams of Jefferson and Myrtle Olmsted of New York; and two brothers, Lyle and Fred Hodge of New Lyme Township.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Della Mae Lane; and a grandson, Gary Otto.
Service is 11 a.m. Friday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 41 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. David T. Hill officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale cemetery.
Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Fleming Funeral Home Inc., a Family Care Group affiliate, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson.

Beverly Mixer Stillman
WINDSOR, Va. - Ashtabula native Beverly Mixer Stillman, 69, of Windsor, Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at her home.
She was born in Ashtabula, the daughter of Harold B. and Esther (McCann) Mixer.
She was a retired food service employee of Southhampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin, Va., and a member of the Antioch Christian Church in Windsor.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley S. Dawson of Zuni, Va., and Victoria S. Sulin of Windsor, Va.; two sons, John C. and Timothy K., both of Windsor Va.; four sisters, Alice M. Gegen of Jensen Beach, Fla., Wanona M. Smith of Saybrook Township, Esther Mae Broad of Ashtabula, and Maribelle M. Shields of Conneaut; three brothers, David H. Mixer, Daniel B. Mixer and Harold B. Mixer, all of Ashtabula; 11 grandchildren and six great - grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, John Herbert Stillman.
Service is 3 p.m. Sunday at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, Va. Burial will be in Woodlawn Church cemetery, Isle of Wight County, Va.
Calling hours are 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Angel D. Velez
GENEVA - Angel D. Velez, 38, of Geneva, died Oct. 5, 1999, at UHHS Memorial Hospital of Geneva.
Mr. Velez was born April 26, 1961, in Lares, Puerto Rico, the son of Valdomero and Callita (Roman) Velez.
An employee of Warner Nurseries for 16 years, he had lived in the Geneva area the past 21 years.
He enjoyed fishing and gardening, and also helped friends paint their houses.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, the former Felicita Diaz, whom he married
March 13, 1998, in Jefferson; a son, Angel Antonio Velex of Geneva; five sisters, Milta, Maribel and Beatriz, all of Chicago, Ill., and Goly and Mirian, both of Puerto Rico; three brothers, Angeli, Luis and Jesus, all of Chicago; and brothers - and sisters - in - law in Geneva.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Service is 10 a.m. Saturday at the Behm Family Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 175 S. Broadway, Geneva. The Rev. Paul Tobin, of Assumption Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery in Ashtabula.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Irene Cooke
MADISON - Irene Cooke, 98, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at Madison Health Care, Madison Township.
Mrs. Cooke was born Aug. 27, 1901, in Madison, the daughter of Willis S. and Gertrude (Norton) Joiner and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a homemaker, and had formerly worked as a hostess at Clark Restaurant in downtown Cleveland.
She was a graduate of Madison High School and attended Central Congregational Church, Madison.
Survivors include a niece, Norma Joiner Merrill of Madison; and three nephews, Halford of Mexico, Lynn of Madison, and Richard K. of Acton, Mass.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; her parents; a sister; and two brothers.
Service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Behm Family Funeral Home, 26 River St., Madison, with the Rev. Jay Schmidt of Central Congregational Church officiating. Burial will be in Middle Ridge cemetery, Madison.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Jennie Marie LaRue
ASHTABULA - Jennie Marie LaRue, 101, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home, Kingsville Township.
Mrs. LaRue was born Aug. 11, 1898, in Ashtabula, the daughter of John and Amelia (Wiig) Honkonen and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. LaRue was a housewife and a homemaker. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, worked with cancer dressing groups, nissua bakers, and quilters. She belonged to the Circle B group.
Survivors include a son, Paul of Mount Dora, Fla.; a daughter, Dorothy Kuhn of Ashtabula; two grandchildren, Patti Anderson and Brad LaRue; and six great - grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William; four brothers, Arvi, Onni, Hank, and Swanne Honkonen; and three sisters, Helen Sawyer, Ina Honkonen, and Laila Bucci.
Service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Lutheran Church, 933 Michigan Ave., Ashtabula, with the Rev. David Hofer officiating. Burial will be in Edgewood cemetery, Ashtabula Township.
No calling hours will be observed.

Almond E. Barkhouer
NEWBURY TOWNSHIP - Almond "Elmer" E. Barkhouer, 84, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital, Ravenna.
Born Apr. 21, 1915, in Auburn Township, he was the son of Vern and Tilley (Coy) Davis.
He was a lifelong Newbury area resident and worked as a rubbish collector for John Humphrey and Solon Disposal for 20 years, retiring in 1979.
He also had to "run the farm" for his great - aunt, Kate Green of Newbury.
He enjoyed attending flea markets, auctions, gardening and walking.
Survivors include, two half - brothers, William Barkhouer and Harvey Green of Shalersville; and three close friends, Irene Carraher and Viola Maddocks of Middlefield and Flora Kotkowski of Shalersville.
He was preceded in death by his parents and step - fathers, Fred Barkhouer and Lyle Green.
Service is 7 p.m. today at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon. Burial will be in Newbury Center cemetery, Newbury Township.
Calling hours are 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Margaret M. Bellows
WARREN - Former Orwell resident Margaret M. Bellows, 81, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Community Skills Nursing Home in Warren.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Snyder of Levittsburg and two sons, James Dodd of Roaming Shores and Charles Bellows of Lakeland, Fla.
She was preceded in death her husband Durwood Bellows.
She has willed her body to science; she'll go to Case Western Reserve University.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Minnie M. Duncan
ASHTABULA - Minnie M. Duncan, 93, of East Prospect Road, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home, Kingsville Township.
Born Jan. 19, 1907, in Adams County, Ind., she was the daughter of Robert J. and Emily Anne (Ramsey) Duncan and was an Ashtabula area resident most of her life.
She was a 1927 graduate of Jefferson High School and graduated from Ashtabula General Hospital School of Nursing in 1934.
During World War II, she served in the Army Nurse Corps from 1941 to 1947 as a captain. She was in the Asiatic - Pacific Theater of Operations from 1947 to 1953. She was a surgical supervisor at Ashtabula General Hospital. She then worked as a nurse for Dr. Gordon Jones from 1953, until her retirement in 1972.
Following her retirement, she served as a Red Cross nurse.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Ashtabula, where she was a member of the Mary Martha Circle and became a life member of United Methodist Women in 1980. She also was a member of the local, state, and national Nurses Association and was a Red Cross volunteer.
Survivors include her sister, Lois Cline, with whom she made her home; and a nephew and a niece, Eugene and Shirley Nemitz of Sheffield Township.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Alvin, Cloyd, Clarence and Wilson, who died in infancy; and three sisters, Mary Ryder, Dora Duncan and Martha Rees.
Service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Ross - Billman Funeral Home, 526 Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with the Rev. Barry Wolfe of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale cemetery in Jefferson.
Calling hours will be 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service at the funeral home.

William D. Gardner
BURTON - William Dale Gardner, 72, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Geauga Regional Hospital.
Born Jan. 21, 1928, in Cleveland, he was a son of Charles and Mary (Smith) Gardner.
He married
Ann Harvilla on May 15, 1954, at St. Philomena in East Cleveland.
He had been a Burton area resident since October. He had lived in Hambden Township since 1970 and was also a former resident of East Cleveland.
He had been a water and street worker for Chardon, but retired in 1981. Prior to that position, he was a co - owner of Bill's Lounge in Cleveland and the Country Inn in Chardon.
He was an Army veteran who had served in Germany.
Mr. Gardner was a member of St. Mary's Church in Chardon.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8755 of Sheffield, Pa.; American Legion Post 888 in Ohio; and the Fraternal Order of Eagles 2261 of Chardon.
He enjoyed spending time at a cabin in West Hickory, Pa.; slot machines; and playing cards.
Survivors include his wife of Burton; three daughters, Deborah Shetina of Wickliffe, Mariann Putney of Chardon and Dale Smith of Burton; seven grandchildren; and a great - grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Church, 401 North St., Chardon, with the Rev. Thomas C. Cilles, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be in Chardon Village cemetery.

Gerald Hayes
ANDOVER - Gerald "Fred" Hayes, 93, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Miller Memorial Health Care Center in Andover.
Born Sept. 1, 1906, in Ossian, Ind., he was a son of Abraham Lincoln and Mary (Keller) Hayes.
Mr. Hayes married
his first wife, Anna K. Burr, on May 6, 1933. She died on Dec. 20, 1943. He married
his second wife, Arabella H. Morrison on Aug. 25, 1948.
The lifelong area resident had lived on Maple Street in Andover. He was a 1925 graduate of Dorset High School.
He had owned his own dairy farm in Richmond Township for more than 60 years. He served for 28 years as Richmond Township clerk.
He was a lifetime member of the Leon United Methodist church.
Mr. Hayes had served for 22 years as a member of the former Richmond and Andover boards of education; was a member of the former Richmond Grange 2034, now the Richfield Grange 1654; was a member of the Pomona Grange and state and national granges; had served as a past deputy master of the Ashtabula County Grange; and was a member of the IOOF Lodge in Conneaut and a former member of the IOOF Lodge in Dorset Township.
He also was a member of the Albino Rebekah Lodge 773 in Dorset Township; the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons; and the Pierpont Masonic Relief Lodge.
He was well - known in the area as a square dance caller, story teller and poetry reader. Earlier in his life, he served as a 4 - H adviser for many years. In his later years, he took painting lessons.
He also enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling, woodworking, music and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Joan E. Smock and Doris M. Beckwith, both of Andover, Susan J. McLaughlin of Phoenix and Helen R. Hayes of Mentor; a son, John D. of Phoenix; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great - grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dean and Pete Hayes and eight sisters, Opal O'Dier, Bessie Ruby, Helen Corbin, Edith Williams, Dorothy Rockey, Ruby Cole, Anna Buzzard and May Hawn.
Funeral is 11 a.m. Thursday at Baumgardner Funeral Home, a Family Care Group affiliate, 134 Prospect St., Andover, with the Rev. Sandra K. Payette, of the Leon United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Richmond Center cemetery.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. There will be an IOOF Lodge service at 7:30 p.m. and Masonic rites at 9 p.m.
