Jack A. Bartone
ASHTABULA - Jack A. Bartone, 48, of Myrtle Avenue died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at University Hospitals, Cleveland.
A lifelong city resident, he was born Sept. 26, 1951, in Ashtabula. He was the son of Jack "Jake" A. and Jennie (Peterson) Bartone.
For several years, Mr. Bartone was employed in the Star Beacon's circulation department.
Mr. Bartone served in the Army from 1971 to 77. His greatest enjoyment was his family.
Survivors include his wife, Carol M. (Wolf), whom he married Aug. 28, 1986, in Ashtabula; three children, Jack Anthony III, Cody Daniel and Cassidy Rain Bartone, all of Ashtabula; three brothers, Nick, Pat and Ronald, all of Ashtabula; and three sisters, Charlene K. Bartone, Mary L. Smith and Tina M. Tyson, all of Ashtabula.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Service is 11 a.m. Thursday at Pentecostal Church of God, 2201 Cook Road, Ashtabula, with the Rev. Kenneth Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove cemetery, Ashtabula.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Childs - Williams Funeral Home, a Family Care Group affiliate, 1440 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula.
Contributions may be made to Mr. Bartone's family. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Thomas Bonsor
CHENEY, Wash. - Former Geneva resident Thomas Bonsor, 69, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, in Spokane, Wash.
The son of Charles and Marian (Mylander) Bonsor, he was born Nov. 7, 1929, in Lorain. He graduated from Geneva High School in 1947 and from Miami State Washington University in 1951. He served with the Army as a military policeman during the Korean War.
In 1958, Mr. Bonsor earned his master's degree from the Fletchers School of Diplomacy at Tufts University. For 41 years, he was a professor of economics at Eastern State Washington University, retiring in Aug. 1999.
Mr. Bonsor was a member of Cheney United Church of Christ in Cheney, Wash.
Survivors include his sister - in - law, Agnes (Gawlikowski) Bonsor of Cerritos, Calif.; and nieces Cindy Flowers of Cypress, Calif., Brenda Evans of Newport Beach, Calif., and Lauri Tillman of Baxley, Ga.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James.
Services were held Sept. 24 in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Cypress, Calif.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or the Cheney United Church of Christ.

Joan Louise Cole
FONTANA, Calif. - Joan Louise Cole, 68, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999.
Born Jan. 21, 1931, in Marietta, she was the daughter of Francis A. and Frances B. Cole.
A graduate of Edgewood High School in 1948, she lived most of her life in California. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren and cats.
Survivors include her four children, Danti Leigh of Winchester, Calif., Kathy Lusky, Manchester, N.H., Luke Pierce and Gene Griffin, both of Grants Pass, Ore.; and a brother, Gary Cole of Ashtabula.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Sue Ellen Schmaltz.
Services were held at Hemet Valley Mortuary, Hemet, Calif.

Leroy W. Heaven
CONNEAUT - Leroy W. Heaven, 81, of Craytor Avenue, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Inn - Conneaut Health Center. He had been a patient there the past two weeks.
Mr. Heaven was born Jan. 5, 1918, in Wall, Pa., the son of Wallace and Bula Donahue Heaven. He had lived in Conneaut since 1968, moving from Pittsburgh.
He worked 25 years at Allied Resins Inc. as a machine operator.
His hobbies included hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, whom he wed July 25, 1939; three daughters, Patricia Fletcher of Seneca, Pa., and Anna Dewey and Judy Smock, both of Conneaut; four sons, Gary G. of Ashtabula, Leroy W. Jr. of Waterford, Pa., Joseph C. of Albion, Pa. and Duane of Conneaut; 18 grandchildren; several great - grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Ambrose of Murraysville, Pa.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Oliver.
Service is 11 a.m. Thursday at the Thompson - Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut, with the Rev. Ashwin Welch, pastor of the East Conneaut United Methodist Church officiating. Interment in Greenlawn Memory Gardens will follow.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Contributions in memory of Mr. Heaven may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Judith A. Hovanec
ORWELL - Judith A. Hovanec, 56, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Hospice of the Western Reserve in Euclid.
She was born Oct. 18, 1942, in Cleveland, the daughter of Joseph and Helen Fink Kavaras.
Ms. Hovanec graduated from Hoban - Dominican High School in Cleveland in 1960. She worked at Kennametal, Orwell, for 22 years as a tipsetter and inspector.
She was a member of St. Mary Church in Orwell and the Daughters of Mary. She enjoyed crafts, tending her flower garden, collecting Norman Rockwell art, golfing, playing board games and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include a son, Michael R. Kavaras of Dublin; two daughters, Theresa L. McDonald of Strasburg, Va., and Laura Hovanec of Orwell; her mother, of Cleveland; three brothers, Joel, Mark and Nick Kavaras, all in Cleveland; two sisters, Gina Gamiere and Mary Thoren, both in Cleveland; and a grandson.
She was preceded in death by her father.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Church of St. Mary, Orwell. The Rev. Gregory Fedor will be the celebrant. Interment of ashes will be in All Souls cemetery, Chardon.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Paine Funeral Home, 140 E. Main St., Orwell.
Gifts in memory of Ms. Hovanec may be given to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 E. 185th St., Cleveland.

Marjorie Kujala
GENEVA - Marjorie Kujala, 85, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at her home.
She was born June 26, 1914, in Mentor, and had lived in Geneva since 1987. She also lived for a time in Perry.
Mrs. Kujala was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Painesville.
Survivors include two daughters, Elnora Lynch of Fairport Harbor and Margie Dennison of Perry; a brother, John Doeing of Geneva; a sister, Maxine Merrill of Painesville; three grandchildren, Debra Calhoun, Harold Dennison III of Melissa Sines; nine great - grandchildren; and four great - great - grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Armas, in 1992; a daughter, Joanne Kujala in 1986; a son - in - law, Donald Lynch; a brother, Henry Doeing Jr.; and a sister, Winifred Doeing.
Graveside service is 1 p.m. Wednesday at Perry cemetery, with the Rev. Eric Linthicum of St. Paul's Lutheran Church officiating.
No calling hours will be observed. Friends will be received at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 250 Bowhall Road, Painesville, after the service.
Contributions in memory of Mrs. Kujala may be given to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church endowment fund.
Spear - Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Ave., Painesville, is handling arrangements.

Frederick C. Caretti
WARREN - Euclid resident Frederick C. Caretti, 69, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at St. Joseph Hospital in Warren.
Born July 27, 1930, in Patton, Pa., he was a son of Chester E. and Lucy M. Caretti.
The lifelong Cleveland area resident had been a welder for New York Central Railroad, White Motor Co. and Churney Auto Body, the business from which he retired in 1994.
An Army veteran, he served with the 11th Airborne Division during the Korean War.
He was a member of Club 17, a social group of men from the Collinwood neighborhood who had attended school together.
Survivors include his mother of Blandburg, Pa.; three sisters, Mary Hamilton of Chicago, Monica Ambroziak of Medina and Lucy Coakley of Munson Township; and a brother, Jerome of Morrisville, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his father, wife and a brother, David A. Buchanan.
Funeral is 12:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Helen's Catholic Church, 12060 Kinsman Road, Newbury Township, with the Rev. Jay McPhillips presiding. Burial will be in All Souls cemetery in Chardon Township.
Calling hours are 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

Dr. Frederick W. Kent
CONNEAUT - Lake Road resident Dr. Frederick W. "Doc" Kent, 74, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at his home in Conneaut.
Born May 15, 1925, in Kendallville, Ind., he was the son of Frederick Clyde and Amy R. (Bolton) Kent.
He married his wife, Marian, on Nov. 1, 1953.
He graduated from Sandusky High School in 1943 and entered the Army. He served in the Seventh Army, 44th Division, 71st Regiment, that landed in Cherbourgh, France, in September 1944. During the battle, he was wounded twice and received two purple hearts.
He was graduated from Western Reserve Dental School in 1952 and moved to Conneaut in 1955. He operated his dental practice there until his retirement in 1983.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
He served 13 years on the Conneaut Port Authority, during which time he made many of the lakefront improvements himself. He also served on the Conneaut Recreation Board.
Dr. Kent was a member and former president and treasurer of the Conneaut Lions Club. He was a former commodore of the Conneaut Boat Club, a member of the American Legion and North East Ohio Radio Flyers, Inc.
He enjoyed computers and writing computer programs for local businesses, boating and flying radio - controlled airplanes. He also sang barbershop with the Sta - Laters (SPEBSQSA). The group won the Johnny Appleseed District contest in 1961.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Amy Dean of Austinburg, Lorrie Kent of Conneaut and Jennifer DeMarco of Conneaut; three sons, Fred Jr. of Orlando, Fla., David of Conneaut and Donald of Webster, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard.
Funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Thompson - Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut, with the Revs. Peg and Ashwin Welch, co - pastors of the First United Methodist Church of Conneaut and the East Conneaut United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood cemetery.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Ashtabula County, Conneaut Lions Club or the Mission Fund of the First United Methodist Church of Conneaut.

John B. Murray
MUNSON TOWNSHIP - John B. Murray, 61, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at his home in Munson Township.
Born April 12, 1938, in Cleveland, he was the son of Joseph and Viola Murray.
He was a former resident of South Euclid and East Cleveland, but had lived in Munson Township for 30 years.
He had retired recently as Geauga County administrator for health reasons.
Mr. Murray was a member of the St. Helen Parish Council, where he sang in the choir.
He was treasurer of the Geauga County Republican Party. He also was a board member of the United Way, Catholic Charities and Geauga Mental Health.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta; a son, John of Cleveland; four daughters, Maureen Sallach of Geneva, Julianne of Lakewood, Kathleen of Austin, Texas, and Kelly Murray of Chardon; and his twin brother, Patrick of Wickliffe.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of St. Helen, 12060 Kinsman Road, Newbury. The Rev. Jay McPhillips will be the celebrant. Burial will be in All Souls cemetery, Chardon Township.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Ritondaro Funeral Home, 126 South St., Chardon.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Geauga Cancer Society, 7861 Crile Road, Concord 44077.

Margaret A. Padula
ANDOVER TOWNSHIP - Pymatuning Lake Road South resident Margaret A. Padula, 71, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at her home in Andover Township.
Born Nov. 21, 1927, in Pittsburgh, Pa., she was the daughter of Sam and Mary S. (Spoljar) Zvonar.
A 1945 graduate of Oliver High School in Pittsburgh, she married Michael A. Padula on June 6, 1946.
A former Leavittsburg resident, she had lived in Andover Township since 1995.
For many years, she worked as a cashier at the Rite Aid in Warren, retiring in 1987.
She was a member of the Williamsfield United Methodist Church and the Kinsman Senior Nutrition Site.
She enjoyed camping, bingo and browsing garage sales.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Michael A. Jr. of Tupelo, Miss., Robert D. of Warren, and Garry A. of Newton Falls; four grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy A. Ranttila of Wildwood, Fla.; and a brother, Ronald J. McKeefery Sr. of Leavittsburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral is 11 a.m. Monday at the Baumgardner Funeral Home, a Family Care Group affiliate, 8569 Main St., Kinsman. The Rev. Julie A. Hanneman will officiate. Cremation will follow the service.
Calling hours are 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Williamsfield United Methodist Church.

Thomas A. Soltis
EUCLID - Euclid resident Thomas A. Soltis, 80, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at Euclid General Hospital.
Born Oct. 11, 1919, in Monroe Township, he was the son of Andrew and Anna (Fobean) Soltis.
He married the former Joyce A. Hewlett on Oct. 3, 1946.
A 1938 graduate of Conneaut High School, he also attended Case Institute, Fenn College and John Carroll University. He had lived in the Cleveland area since 1949.
In 1982, he retired from his position as a laboratory supervisor in Dana Corp.
Mr. Soltis was a member of St. Robert Catholic Church in Euclid.
A veteran of the Army Air Corps, he served in the South Pacific during World War II.
He was reunion chairman of the 46th Troop Carrier Squadron and also belonged to American Legion Cowle Post 151.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially weekend family gatherings at the family homestead in Bushnell, Monroe Township.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Susan M. Hawkes of Cleveland Heights and Kathleen A. Klecan of Olmsted Township; two sons, Patrick T. of Shaker Heights and Daniel A. of Madison, N.J.; and four brothers, Larry and Raymond, both of Conneaut, John of Ashtabula and Robert of Erie, Pa.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary R. Soltis, Helen P. Soltis and Delores C. Sedor and seven brothers, Joseph, Paul, Albert, Edward, Bernard, Rudolph and Adam Soltis.
Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Church, 480 State St., Conneaut, with the Rev. John R. Summers presiding. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery, with Cowle Post conducting military rites.
Calling hours are 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Marcy Funeral Home, a Family Care Group affiliate, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Bertha Vignal
CONNEAUT - Bertha Vignal, 89, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at Inn Conneaut Health Center, where she had been for the past two months.
She was born Oct. 27, 1910, in Ravenna.
She married Nicholas Vignal on June 12, 1926, in Ripley, N.Y.
Mrs. Vignal had worked at the Goldette as a server assembler and later at the Atatic as an assembler.
She was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Church and St. Mary Church in Conneaut.
She enjoyed playing the slot machines at casinos at Los Vegas and Niagara Falls. She also enjoyed crocheting afghans, traveling to Florida, eating out and visiting with customers at her son and daughter - in - law's flower shop.
Survivors include a son, Jack of Conneaut; a daughter, Shirley Rose of Conneaut; eight grandchildren; and five great - grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two daughters, Mary Louis Warren in 1984 and Marie Sabo in 1999.
Mass of Christian Burial is 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 744 Mill St. The Rev. Bernard N. Gaeta, pastor of Mount Carmel Church, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery, Conneaut.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Raisian Funeral Home, a Family Care Group affiliate, 581 Harbor St.
