Berman Gattshall
GROVER HILL - Berman Gattshall, 88, Grover Hill, died at 1:35 a.m. Monday in Paradise Oaks Health Care Center, Cloverdale.
He was born Nov. 23, 1913, Van Wert County's Jackson Township, the son of Harry and Hazel (McClure) Gattshall. In 1934, he married
Dorotha Roughia, who died in 1988. The farmer had been employed at Lima Tank Depot during World War II and was a member of Middle Creek United Methodist Church, Grover Hill.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ronnie (Ramona) Gephart, Decatur, Ind.; a brother, Glenn, Rockford; a sister, Mrs. Ernest (Betty) Miller, Grover Hill; and five grandchildren, a stepgrandchild, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-stepgrandchildren.
Also preceding him in death was a brother, Charles.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with Rev. Paul Miller officiating. Burial will be in Middle Creek cemetery, Grover Hill. Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. today and after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Preferred memorials are to Paradise Oaks Health Care Center, Cloverdale.
Eldor Plassman
NAPOLEON - Eldor G. Plassman, 86, Napoleon, died this morning in Lutheran Home, Napoleon. Arrangements are pending at Walker Mortuary, Napoleon.
Thelma Heyd
OTTAWA - Thelma V. Heyd, 86, Ottawa, died at 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Putnam Acres Care Center, Ottawa.
She was born March 23, 1915, in Ottawa, the daughter of Harvey and Mary Ellen (Hawk) Salsburey. In 1943, she married
Roy Heyd, who died in 1966. She was a former office manager at Weather Seal Manufacturing Co., a former secretary at Pauls Inc. and a charter member of Ottawa Missionary Church.
Surviving are a sister, Violet Rader, Findlay; and a foster sister, Bessie Mumaugh, Lima.
Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Robert and Richard Salsburey; and a sister, Betty Johnston.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Ottawa, with Rev. Marshall Metzger officiating. Burial will be in Harman cemetery, Gilboa. Visitation is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Preferred memorials are to the church or Putnam Acres Care Center.
Carl Erb
STRYKER - Carl F. Erb, 86, Stryker, died Sunday evening in Community Hospitals of Williams County-Bryan.
He was born Aug. 12, 1915, in Milford, Neb., the son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Jausi) Erb. In 1938, he married
Helen Walden, who survives. He was an auto mechanic for more than 70 years at John Rich and Keller Pontiac and attended Stryker United Methodist Church.
Also surviving are a son, Richard, Stryker; a daughter, Sharon Shindledecker, Stryker; and five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were three brothers, two sisters and a grandson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Grisier Funeral Home, Stryker, with Rev. Jeffrey Ridenour officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, Stryker. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. today.
Preferred memorials are to the family, Gideons International or the church.
Irene Anderson
Services for Irene I. Anderson were held Monday in Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home with Rev. Todd Anderson officiating. Burial was in Riverview Memory Gardens. Pallbearers were LaVon and Edwin Anderson, Larry and Rex Cameron, Bob Carpenter and Ken Cantrell.
Carl Wendell
Services for Carl (Huey) D. Wendell were held Monday in Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home with Rev. Robert McNamara officiating. Burial was in Riverview Memory Gardens with military rites conducted by VFW Post 3360. Pallbearers were Brian Anderson, Kyle and Andrew Kime, and Joseph, Todd and Steven Wendell.
Irene Anderson
Irene I. Anderson, 90, Defiance, died at 7:15 p.m. Friday in Defiance Hospital.
She was born Oct. 15, 1911, in Hillsdale, Mich., the daughter of Victor and Laura (Bauer) Schortgen. In 1934, she married
Gilford Anderson, who died in 1986. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are two daughters, Gail Cameron and Margene Kruse, both of Defiance; two sons, LaVon of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Edwin, Defiance; and 20 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home with Rev. Todd Anderson officiating. Burial will be Riverview Memory Gardens. Visitation is from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today.
Preferred memorials are to Cancer Care of Defiance.
Wilbur Kolb
Wilbur (Red) V. Kolb, 79, Defiance, died at 3:04 p.m. Friday in Laurels of Defiance.
He was born Nov. 23, 1922, in Defiance, the son of Frank and Flossie (Pickering) Kolb. He was a truck driver at Defiance County Engineers' Department, a former postal route substitute, a former school bus driver and a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Father Flanagan's Boys Town, Carl Fraley's Ranch and Defiance County Engineer Union Local 3137. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and earned the EAME Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award and World War II Victory Medal.
Surviving are nieces and nephews, including niece and caregiver, Mrs. Gene (Judy) Weber, Defiance.
Preceding him in death were two brothers, Anthony and Eldred; and a sister, Margaret.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home with Father George Wenzinger officiating. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Monday with a Catholic rosary service slated for 7:30 p.m.
Preferred memorials are to Hospice the Caring Way of Defiance.
Christopher Gilmore
OAKWOOD - Former Brunersburg resident Christopher E. Gilmore, 32, rural Oakwood, died at 5:40 p.m. Friday in his home.
He was born July 6, 1969, in Ft. Rucker, Ala., the son of Edward and Karen (Casey) Gilmore. He was a 1987 graduate of Tinora High School, a welder, member of the Fellowship Club and a former member of Defiance Eagles Aerie 372.
Surviving are his parents, rural Oakwood; and grandparents, Freda Gilmore of Middlepoint and Velva Casey, Bidwell.
Preceding him in death were grandparents, Clarence Gilmore and Charles Casey.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Frake officiating. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery. Visitation is from 2-9 p.m. Monday.
Preferred memorials are to Northwest Ohio Hemophilia Foundation for Summer Camp.
George Hoste
ANTWERP - George A. Hoste, 79, Antwerp, died at 8 a.m. Friday in his home.
He was born March 5, 1922, in Moline, Ill., the son of Rene and Alice (Coleman) Hoste. In 1946, he married
Rachel Coucquyt, who died in 1975. In 1977, he married
Ursula Clark, who survives. The U.S. Army veteran of World War II was a manager for 31 years at International Harvester, Fort Wayne. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Antwerp, Paulding VFW Post 587, Antwerp VFW Post 5087, Antwerp American Legion Post 253 and Knights of Columbus.
Also surviving are two daughters, Nancy Killian of Hicksville and Linda Rhoad, Cecil; a stepson, Bill Tope, Greenfield, Ind.; two stepdaughters, Beverly Bercaw and LeAnn Moser, both of Paulding; a sister, Pauline Bigelow, Bowling Green; and four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren and two great-stepgrandchildren.
Also preceding him in death was a brother, Frank.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the church with Father Herman Scherger and Deacon Robert Nighswander officiating. Burial will be in Maumee cemetery. Visitation is from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. today in Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp, with a 7:30 p.m. vigil service.
Preferred memorials are to Paulding Area Visiting Nurses and Hospice or Paulding Hospital's Home Health Care.
Rita Bott
VAN WERT - Former Miller City resident Rita M. Bott, 72, Van Wert, died at 2:05 a.m. Friday in St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima.
She was born April 28, 1929, in Putnam County, the daughter of Albert and Marie (Wagner) Brown. In 1949, she married
Richard Bott, who died in 1990. She worked at Sylvania GTE, Ottawa, and was a member of New Bavaria VFW Post 8847 Auxiliary and St. Mary's Catholic Church, Van Wert.
Surviving are a daughter, Deborah Kleman, Van Wert; a brother, Albert Brown Jr., Arkansas; two sisters, Rosalia Brown of Van Wert and Mrs. Ron (Jean) Meyer, Auburn, Ind.; two stepbrothers, Randall Merritte of Florida and Fred Merritte, Alabama; three stepsisters, Mrs. Tom (Jan) Miller of Ottawa, Naomi Quigley of Florida and Mrs. Charles (Roberta) Bair, Van Wert; and five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were her parents; a sister, Virginia Brown; and two stepbrothers, Glen and Craig Merritte.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa, with Father Tom Hemm officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery, North Creek. Visitation is from 2-9 p.m. today in Love Funeral Home, Ottawa, with a scripture service at 7 p.m.
Danny Slee
LAS VEGAS - Word was received of the Feb. 18 death of former Liberty Center resident Danny Martin Slee, 64, Las Vegas.
He was born May 25, 1937, in Maumee, the son of Homer and Pearle (Ferguson) Slee. In 1982, he married
Sharon Gallagher. He was a director of engineering with Madalay Resort Group, Las Vegas, and a former employee of E.K. Bridge Construction and S.E. Johnson Construction.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. James (Cinda) Senick of North Royalton, Mrs. Emmon (Dana) Schmucker of Goshen, Ind., and Kristi Grandstaff, Las Vegas; a sister, Mrs. Walter (Linda) Helmke, Napoleon; and seven grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his father; his mother, Pearle Spiess; his stepfather, Wilbur (Mike) Spiess; and a brother, David.
Services were held Feb. 23 in Las Vegas.
Preferred memorials are to Lutheran Home, in care of Wright Funeral Home, Liberty Center.
Joe Buell
CUMBERLAND GAP, Tenn. - Joe C. Buell, 90, Cumberland Gap, died at 7:55 p.m. Thursday in Toledo Hospital.
He was born Oct. 16, 1911, in Pineville, Ky., the son of Jim and Polly (Baker) Buell. He married
Della Carroll, who died in February. He married
Haster (Evans) Partin, who survives. He worked for 21 years in the mines and 20 years at GM Powertrain, retiring in 1973.
Surviving are six sons, Murphy of Middlesboro, Ky., Alden, Edward and Joie, all of Defiance, Kenneth of Sherwood and Hubert, Paulding; five daughters, Genella Smith of Cecil, Mrs. Vic (Christine) Smith and Mrs. Jim (Genetta) Ross, both of Paulding, Mrs. Ray (Vandetta) Smith of Defiance and Mrs. Gib (Ann) Neal, Lima; a sister Roxie Queen, Kingsport, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Frances Ferguson, Ewing, Va.; and 35 grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, nine great-great grandchildren and seven great-stepgrandchildren.
Also preceding him in death were two sons, Russell and Jack; three brothers, Ben, Charlie and Hubert; and three sisters, Judy Carroll, Patsy Ann Williams and Mossie Hunter.
Services will be at 12 p.m. Monday in Shumaker Funeral Home, Middlesboro, Ky., with Rev. Shelby Money officiating. Visitation is this evening. Burial will be in Peavy cemetery, Clear Creek, Ky.
Preferred memorials are to the building funds of Pleasant View Missionary Baptist Church in Junction or Hensley Chapel Baptist Church, Middlesboro.
