George Bowers Sr.
PAULDING - George Rolland Bowers Sr., 79, Paulding, died at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday in his residence following an extended illness.
He was born June 17, 1922, in Huntington, Ind., the son of Otto and Viola (Wike) Bowers. In 1941, he married
Ruth Fields, who died in 1995. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a field superintendent for N.G. Gilbert Corp., Muncie, Ind., retiring in 1984.
Surviving are four sons, George Jr. of Grover Hill, Kenneth and Patric, both of Paulding, and Tim, Columbus; three daughters, Mrs. Bradley (Katherine) Clemens, Mrs. Randy (Barbara) Farquhar and Mrs. Harvey (Susan) Clemens, all of Paulding; a brother, Rex, Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters, June Bauman of Deland, Fla., and Phylis Denton, Deltona, Fla.; and 26 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death were a son, Frank; and four brothers and three sisters.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with Rev. Max Begley officiating. There will be no visitation.
Preferred memorials are to Paulding County Area Visiting Nurses-Hospice.
Marie Davis
NAPOLEON - Services for Marie E. Davis were held this morning in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Napoleon, with Pastors Norman Koy and Peter Marcis officiating. Burial was in Riverview Memory Gardens, Defiance. Snyder-Wesche Funeral Home, Napoleon, handled arrangements. Among survivors was a daughter, Mrs. Mack (Linda) Mullins, Napoleon.
Ruth Guilliam
Ruth M. Guilliam, 89, Defiance, died at 12:10 a.m. Thursday in Harborside Healthcare Center.
She was born Oct. 19, 1912, in Cecil, the daughter of Thomas and Augusta (Pracht) Guilliam. She was a clerk at the Du Drop Inn for 30 years and a life member of St. John Lutheran Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Elsie Gary and Doris Guilliam, both of Defiance.
Preceding her in death were two brothers, Paul and Richard; and a sister, Marjorie Replogle.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Luhring officiating. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery. Visitation is from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday.
Preferred memorials are to the church.
Frederick Seal Sr.
Frederick L. Seal Sr., 68, Defiance, died at 1:10 p.m. Wednesday in Toledo Hospital. Surviving is his wife, Patricia. Arrangements are pending at Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home.
Charlene Lantz
ARCHBOLD - Charlene M. Lantz, 70, Archbold, died Tuesday evening.
She was born Oct. 5, 1931, near Archbold, the daughter of Alfred and Flossie (Nofzinger) Short. In 1950, she married
Robert Lantz, who survives. She was a caterer with Vera Williams Schmidt and Mary Alyce Schang and a children's minister and member of Victory Barn Church, Edgerton.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Pamela) Eade of Volant, Pa., and Mrs. Ned (Sandra) Wyse and Mrs. Jon (Dawn) Lugbill, both of Archbold; a brother, William Short, Montpelier; a sister, Mrs. Loyal (Donnabelle) Nofziger, Archbold; and six grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and a brother, Richard Short.
Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the church with Pastors Rosene Short, Tom Louis and Ron Eade officiating. Burial will precede services in Lockport cemetery, Stryker. Visitation is from 7-9 p.m. today and 2-9 p.m. Friday in Short Funeral Home, Archbold.
Preferred memorials are to Gideons International.
Irene McKarns
BRYAN - Irene M. McKarns, 88, Bryan, died Wednesday at Dilworth Center, Montpelier.
She was born Jan. 31, 1914, in Defiance County, the daughter of Mord and Hazel (McCavitt) Moog. In 1937, she married
Homer Martin, who died in 1966. In 1973, she married
Paul McKarns, who survives. She was a clerk at J.J. Newberry and Gorny-Winzeler until retiring in 1976 and a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Fountain City Squares, Riverside Golf Course in Stryker and Pulaski Garden Club.
Also surviving are two sons, James Martin of Los Angeles and Arthur, Redondo Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Pat Putnam, Sebastopol, Calif.; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Arthur and Paul Moog; and a sister, Orylis Robinson.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in Oberlin-Ford Funeral Home, Bryan, with Rev. Christopher Hintz officiating. Visitation is from 1-4 p.m. Saturday.
Earl Gibbs Sr.
HICKSVILLE - Earl Richard Gibbs Sr., 85, Hicksville, died at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday in Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana, Fort Wayne.
He was born Feb. 8, 1917, in Mason County, W.Va., the son of Richard and Stella (Davis) Gibbs. In 1936, he married
Wilma Haskins, who survives. He was a coal miner and foreman on the New York Central Railroad in Corning. He retired in 1982 from the Ohio Department of Corrections as a chief stationary engineer after 20 years. He was a member of Hicksville Church of the Nazarene and he and his wife started churches of the Nazarene in Lebanon and Monroe before moving to Hicksville.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Clifford (Bette Lou) Reynolds of Hicksville and Mrs. Jerry (Anna Jean) Brown, Lebanon; a son, Earl Jr., Morgantown, W.Va.; a brother, Russell, Columbus; and 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Preceding him in death were a daughter, Janice Moline; two brothers, Albert and Alfred; and three sisters, Myrtle Baer, Ocy Hill Davis and Esta Norris.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Brown Funeral Home, Hicksville, with Pastors Claude Nicholas, Robert Knapp and Rex Person officiating. Burial will be in Scipio cemetery, Harlan, Ind. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Friday and after 9 a.m. Saturday.
Preferred memorials are to Gideons International or Nazarene World Missions.
Esther Sunderland
HICKSVILLE - Former Fort Wayne resident Esther W. Sunderland, 86, Hicksville, died Tuesday in Hickory Creek Care Center, Hicksville.
She was born June 27, 1915, in Effingham, Ill., the daughter of Charles and Minnie (Budde) Wendling. In 1947, she married
William (Pete) Sunderland Jr., who died in 1964. She attended Fort Wayne Beauty College and was a beautician at Hutners, Fort Wayne, for 15 years.
Surviving are nieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Art, Carl and Albert Wendling; and five sisters, Alice Buehrer, Lorene Schade, Luella and Melva Stein and Milda Wendling, in infancy.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in Rice Funeral Home, Sherwood, with Ted Lovejoy officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne. Visitation is one hour prior to services Sunday.
Preferred memorials are to a charity of the donor's choice.

McCLURE - Virgil Snyder, 75, McClure, died Wednesday in Wood County Hospital, Bowling Green. Arrangements are pending at Rodenberger Funeral Home, McClure.
Patricia Sterling
McCLURE - Patricia Sterling, 71, McClure, died Wednesday in Medical College of Ohio Hospital, Toledo. Arrangements are pending at Rodenberger Funeral Home, McClure.
Marie Davis
NAPOLEON - Marie E. Davis, 69, Napoleon, died Tuesday afternoon in Toledo Hospital.
She was born March 6, 1932, in Henry County's Freedom Township, the daughter of Henry and Emilie (Gerken) Behnfeldt. In 1951, she married
Calvin (Red) Davis, who died in 1996. She was a nurse's aid at Northcrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, a volunteer there after she retired and attended Henry County Senior Center.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mack (Linda) Mulling of Napoleon and Mrs. George (Mary Ann) Kellerbauer, Walbridge; three sons, David and Michael, both of Napoleon, and Jerry, McClure; a sister, Esther Behnfeldt, Napoleon; two brothers, Eldor Behnfeldt of Napoleon and Walter Behnfeldt, McClure; and 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were four brothers, Henry, Elmer, Donald and Patrick in infancy; and an infant sister, Norma Jean.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the church with Pastors Norman Koy and Peter Marcis officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Memory Gardens, Defiance. Visitation is from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in Snyder-Wesche Funeral Home, Napoleon.
Preferred memorials are to Henry County Senior Center, the church or a charity of the donor's choice.
Theresa Stabler
PAYNE - Theresa V. Stabler, 88, Payne, died at 6:36 a.m. Wednesday in Convoy Care Center.
She was born Jan. 25, 1914, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of John and Catherine (Staub) Chomey. In 1943, she married
Cletus Stabler, who died in 1974. She was a former sales associate for Montgomery Ward and Wayne Knitting Mills, both in Fort Wayne, and a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Payne, its Altar Rosary Society and Joan of Arc Study Club.
Surviving are three sons, Edward and Paul, both of Payne, and Kenneth, Fort Wayne; two daughters, Mrs. Larry (Joan) Proxmire and Mrs. Winston (Rita) Gross, both of Payne; three sisters, Anna Gibson, Elizabeth Furge and Cecilia Stellhorn, all of Fort Wayne; and 23 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were two brothers, John and Joe Chomey; four sisters, Katie Lapham, Marie Bireley, Helen Poynter and Irene Chomey, in infancy; and two great-granddaughters.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the church with Rev. G. Allan Fillman officiating. Burial will be in Lehman cemetery, Payne. Visitation is from 2-9 p.m. Friday and 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday in Slade Funeral Home, Payne. There will be a rosary service at 8 p.m. Friday. Assisting with arrangements is Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding.
Preferred memorials are to masses or St. John the Baptist Elementary School, Payne.
Richard Steffel
Richard E. Steffel, 83, Defiance, died at 10:55 p.m. Tuesday in his home.
He was born Sept. 4, 1918, in Defiance, the son of George and Elizabeth (Wagner) Steffel. In 1945, he married
Ruth Lloyd, who died in 1995. Known as the "Radish King, " he was co-owner/operator of Ohio Farmers Inc., a trucking and produce company with locations in Ney, Marshall, Mich., and Zellwood, Fla. His company developed and patented automatic packaging machinery and was the first to offer radishes in cello plastic bags, shipping them as far away as the United Kingdom. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and Moose Lodge 2094, a life member of Defiance Fish and Game and Little League Baseball Association and former member of Knights of Columbus and Holy Name Society.
Surviving are a son, James, Defiance; a daughter, Mrs. Scott (JoAnn) Baker, Englewood, Fla.; a sister, Marie Rahmel, Defiance; and two grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death was a brother, Louis.
Services will be at 12 p.m. Friday in the church with Father George Wenzinger officiating. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery. Visitation is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday in Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, with vigil service at 7:30 p.m.
