Once, one of her sons took some frozen mushrooms to a late night party. Joan later told him that she wished he had taken the steaks instead! Joan was the hostess for many birthday and holiday parties. For years, she hosted an extended family dinner on Christmas Eve. Joan loved the game of Scrabble and played it for years with a friend from childhood. Once, Joan stopped over to visit one of her children, and ended up playing Monopoly for at least eight hours with her young granddaughter. Joan was a dedicated Den Mother for the Boy Scouts. Over the holidays, she would frequently shop during the early bird specials as well as join in with the night owls. While shopping, Joan often looked for Precious Moment figurines; she appreciated receiving them as gifts. Joan mostly worked at McCord’s factory, and she also was an Avon Lady. On two extended vacations, Joan and her husband were able to travel to Hawaii, and they couldn’t stop talking about Hawaii’s beauty.
Also, Joan won a contest in around 1956 sponsored by the then Heckman Cracker Company. She and a guest won an all - expense paid trip to California to see Liberace. Joan and her daughter visited Liberace at his home, joined him at night clubs, and saw him on set of the movie, Sincerely Yours, along with Dorothy Malone. Joan and her daughter had an action - packed week and shared many fond memories over the years. Joan was also able to go backstage to see Liberace when he appeared in Toledo, Ohio, years later.
