George L. May
1923 - 2006
George L. May age 83, of Crown City, died Thursday September 7, 2006, at his residence, where he resided with his granddaughter Debra D (John) Queen and his two great grandsons, David and Matthew Bates. Born April 2, 1923 in Delaware, Ohio, son of the late Harry and Lydia Graham May. In addition to his parents he was preceded by his wife Virginia E. Hemphill May, infant child David May, 2 Sisters: Lorena May and Helen Santler, 5 Brothers: Floyd, Harold, Lester, Pete, and Tommy May.
George spent most of his life in Columbus, Ohio. He was a member of the Plasters Union and a member of the Elizabeth Chapel Church for many years.

He is survived by 3 Sisters: Betty Dinardo, Caroline May, and Sophronia Castel; 2 Sister in laws: Mary Jo Porter and Libby G. Crothers; 2 Sons: George May Jr. and Rodney C. May both of Columbus, Ohio; 1 Daughter: Roxy A. Brumfield; 6 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren, and by many Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins.

George's caregiver's and special friends were Stacy Glenn of Point Pleasant (known as George's 'Breath of Sunshine'), Tammie McCleary of Gallipolis, and Virginia Huffman of Crown City.

Services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday September 10, 2006 at Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home 810 Second Ave. Gallipolis, Ohio with Rev. Alfred Holley officiating. Burial will follow in St. Nick cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 7-9 P.M.

Pallbearers will be: Robert D. Bates, Matthew L. Bates, Ivan Brumfield Jr., Mark Chafin, Craig Knight, Joshua Legg, Timothy S. Brumfield, and Paul William Chafin.

Aline Estep
1920 - 2006
Aline Estep, age 86, of Gallipolis, died Tuesday morning September 5, 2006 at her residence. Born July 4, 1920 in Dakota, WV. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Bertha Perry Grounds. In addition to her parents she was preceded her husband Elijah Estep Sr. who she married on September 13, 1937 in Kanawha County, WV. And who preceded her on September 2, 1988, by 4 brothers, Herndon, Herbert, Dobbie and Wesley 'Larry' Grounds, by 7 sisters, Josephine Markin, Ellen Shiltz, Kathleen Johnson, Esther Stanley, Evelyn Grounds, Mae Grounds, and Lee Ann Grounds and by a great grandchild, Eden Elijah Estep.
Mrs. Estep was a homemaker, and also worked along side her husband as a shoe cobbler in Gallipolis. Earlier she worked for the Ohio Valley Creamery in Albany.

She was a member of the Apostolic Gospel Church in Gallipolis.

She is survived by:

3 Sons: Elijah (Kay) Estep Jr. of Eureka
Thomas 'Jack' (Patsy) Estep of Bidwell
James (Rosemary) Estep of Glouster
1 Daughter: Anita Estep of Gallipolis
7 Grandchildren: Thomas Jr., Timothy, Todd, Tonya, David, Jeremy, and Jason.
9 Great Grandchildren: Timothy, Sara, Joshua, Tony, Lillianna, Quinton, Halley, Gene, and Ashley.
2 Brothers: George (Jan) Grounds of Albany
Johnny (Connie) Grounds of Okeechobee, FL.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM. Friday September 8, 2006 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral Home 810 2nd. Ave. Gallipolis, with Rev. Willard Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in Ohio Valley Memory Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 6-9 PM.

Helen L. Burnett
1926 - 2006
Helen Lorraine Allensworth Burnett, of Gallipolis, died Sunday August 13, 2006 at her residence. Born January 31, 1926 in Cheshire, she was the daughter of the late F. Dale and Vida M. Rothgeb Allensworth.
She attended Cheshire schools and was Valedictorian of her graduating class in 1944. In February 1945 she joined the Cadet Nursing Corp. and received her nurses training at Holzer Hospital, graduating in 1948. she did not get to serve her country due to the war being over.

Helen was employed at Holzer Medical Center for approximately 25 years, where she held various positions, she retired in 1982.

On November 4, 1949 she married Claude B. Burnett at Greenup, Kentucky and to this union were born 4 children, Frederick F. (Barbara) Burnett, C. David Burnett, Barry W. Burnett, and Patricia Ann Baxter. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Tyler W., Christopher L., Sarah Nicole, Kyle David, Jared Dale Burnett, and Caroline Lorraine Baxter. 1 Great Grandchild, Cash Christopher Burnett, and 2 sisters, Dorothy M. Broyles and Roberta M. (Oliver) Kail, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded by 2 grandchildren, Frederick Colby Burnett and Allyson Leigh Burnett.

Helen attended the Fair Haven United Methodist Church in Kanauga, where she served as teacher of the Nursery and pre-school classes, church historian, chair of the outreach, bible school teacher, Fellowship organization secy./treas. And served on the planning committee.

She was a member of the Gallia County Historical Society, and First Families of Gallia County, Gallipolis OES #283, a member of the Nurses Health Study and Boston MA. and at Harvard for over 25 years.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM. Wednesday August 16, 2006 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Lamphier and Dewey Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Addison Reynolds cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5-9 PM.

Helens grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Ernest E. Sheesley
1928 - 2006
Ernest E. Sheesley, age 77, of Gallipolis, died Wednesday evening July 19, 2006 at Holzer Medical Center. Born July 29, 1928 in Lower Burrell, PA. He was the son of the late Clayton and Elizabeth J. Minhinett Sheesley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his twin brother Edward Sheesley.
Ernie was a graduate of the University of Hard Knocks. He worked as a food service director for over 40 years. He also owned and operated Sheesley's Restaurant in Shelocta, PA. For 14 years. The last several years he was an employee of the Gallia Auto Sales. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Gallipolis. He was an active member of the Gallipolis Shrine Club, and the Shrine Clown unit. He also was instrumental in starting the Shrine Klown unit in Elkins, WV. Before moving to Gallipolis. He was also a member of the Kentucky Colonels. Ernie also dearly loved hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn Ann Hanshaw Sheesley who he married January 21, 1967 in New Kensington, PA.

Also surviving him are 4 children, Timothy (Elana) Sheesley of TN., Janice (Larry) Miney of Latrobe, PA., Ray (Nora) Shau of Marietta, and Roy (Jo) Shau of Marietta, 8 Grandchildren, 4 Great Grandchildren, a sister, Aletha Frantz of PA. and a brother, Bill Sheesley of FL.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM. Saturday July 22, 2006 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral Home with Rev. Tim Louma officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview cemetery in Williamstown, WV. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4-8 PM.

Masonic services will be conducted at 8:00 PM. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children 3229 Burnet Ave. Cincinnati, OH. 45229-3095.

A special thank you to the Drs., nurses, administrators, housekeeping and all other staff members for the loving care you provided to our family.

Pallbearers will be: David Mink, Don Mink, Wendell Haner, Roger Puckett, Mark Neal, and Charles Stover. Honorary pallbearers will be: Tom Pasquale, Charles Meadows, Lawrence Theiss, Hobe Foster, and Ike Kinghting.

Oleta Wood
1922 - 2006
Oleta lee Wood, age 83, of Gallipolis, died Thursday morning June 15, 2006 at Holzer medical Center. Born July 1, 1922 in Gallia County, she was the daughter of the late Kentworth and Margaret Gebhardt Butler. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband, Carl B. 'Dutch' Wood, and by a brother in law, Frank Mills.
Oleta was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and a member of the Gallipolis Emblem Club.

She is survived by:

1 Daughter: Linda (David) Sheets of Worthington
2 Grandchildren: Matt (Erika) Sheets of Cleveland
Kati (Paul) Mascari of Columbus
2 Great Grandchildren: Cole Mascari, and David Sheets
1 Sister: Eloise Mills of Crown City 1 Brother: Paul (Elizabeth) Butler of Crown City

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM. Saturday June 17, 2006 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral home, with Pastor Tim Luoma officiating. Burial will follow in Mound Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 6-8 PM.

Alva Glenn Shoemaker
1920 - 2006
Alva Glenn Shoemaker, age 85, died June 5, 2006 at Holzer Senior Health Care Center. His last address was Holzer-Wyngate in which he resided from June 2003 until his entrance from Holzer Medical Center on May 25, 2006.
Mr. Shoemaker was a retired Executive Vice President and Board Secretary of Star Bank. He was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church where he served as both Senior Warden and Vestry member. He was a member of the Gallipolis Elk's club, and aredent, golfer, he was a past officer of the Gallipolis Golf Club.

He was a graduate of Gallia Academy High School. He attended Ohio State University until his Sophmore year when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the outbreak of World War II. He was in the Naval Air Flight Training School at William Jewel University, Liberty, Missouri. He finished his service command center of the Fleet Marines at Camp Pendelton, San Clemente, California.

Mr. Shoemaker was preceded in death by his parents, Olta Daugherty Shoemaker and Roy Glenn Shoemakerm and his wife Jacquelyn Parsons Shoemaker. He is survived by his only sister Bette, Mrs. Charles Bruce Goodrich of Daytona Beach, Florida, and devoted cousins Leah Swann Schoonover and William Schoonover of Hilda Drive. Three Nephews: D. Douglas Burkett (Kathe) of Dexter, Michigan, Scott Alan Burkett of Toledo, Ohio, and Jonathan Glenn Burkett (Mary) of Covington, Louisana. There are also three great nieces and two great nephews.

Memorial services will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday June 10, 2006 at St. Peters Episcopal Church, with Rev. Marie Mulford officiating. Burial will follow in Gravel Hill cemetery. Military Funeral Honors will be presented at the cemetery by the Gallia County Veterans Funeral Detail.Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home is in charged of arrangements.

John J. Call
1927 - 2006
John J. Call, age 79, of Gallipolis, died Saturday evening May 20, 2006 at Pleasant Valley Hospital in Pt. Pleasant. Born March 13, 2927 in Gallia County, he was the son of the late John and Ruby Beaver Call. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by 2 Sons: John Maurice Call, and Timothy Zoltan Call, by Brother: Richard 'Joe' Call, and by a Sister: Carrol Jean Call.
John retired from Gallipolis Developmental and also farmed for many years.

He is survived by: Wife: Farris C. Wickline Call who he married on April 12, 1954 in Gallia County; 1 Son: Sgt 1st Class Sean Ray (Tracy) Call of Gallipolis; 1 Daughter: Sonja Renee (D. J.) Halley of Crown City; 4 Grandchildren: Nathan Halley, Zachary (Krisie) Halley, Matthew Halley and Dalton Call; 1 Sister: Liz Fisher; Several Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P. M. Thursday May 25, 2006 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home with Rev. Alfred Holley officiating. Burial will follow in Providence cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6-9 P.M.

Ellen Houck
1951 - 2006
Ellen Louise Johnson Houck, age 55, of Crown City, died Thursday April 27, 2006 at her home. Born January 23, 1951 in Gallipolis, she was the daughter of the late Clayton and Betty Elizabeth Springer Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by 4 brothers, Bill, Floyd, Merrill Eugene, and Danny Johnson, 3 sisters, Lorena Pickett, Christina Queen, and Mary Alice Johnson.
Ellen was a homemaker and the co-owner of Houck's Plumbing and Heating in Gallipolis.

She is survived by:

Husband: Vernon Houck who she married on September 8, 1974 in Gallipolis.
Daughter: Tina Houck (James) McCarty of Crown City
Granddaughter: Samantha McCarty of Crown City
5 brothers: Everett, Clarence, Lenville, and Clayton Johnson Jr. all of Gallipolis, and Carroll Johnson of Florida
7 sisters: Dorothy Johnson, Brenda Spaulding, Linda Earl, Norma Johnson, Phyllis Buttrick, Wanda Morgan, and Gertrude DeVault all of Gallipolis.
Many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM. Tuesday May 2, 2006 at Providence Missionary Baptist Church 3677 Teens Run Road Crown City, with Rev. Todd Bowers officiating. Burial will follow in Providence cemetery. Friends may call at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home on Monday from 2-4 and 6-9 PM. and at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to services.

Pallbearers will be: James McCarty, William Houck, Todd Houck, Justin Ireland, Tommy Buttrick, John Spaulding, Jeff Spaulding, and Jason Spaulding.

Honorary Pallbearers will be: Roger Houck, Michael Dean Barcus, Clayton Johnson, and Michael Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the family.

Mary Frances Sanna Jennings Harrison

Mary Frances Sanna Jennings Harrison, of Gallipolis died Thursday March 23, 2006 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Flordia, following a brief illness.
Mary was preceded by her parents, Michael and Josephine Greco Sanna, by her first husband Thomas C. Jennings Jr. and her second husband Donald L. 'Don' Harrison. Also preceding her are 2 Brothers, Paul and Nick Sanna, a Sister, Margaret Sanna Sizemore, and a sister in law, Sharon Sanna.

Mary was a retired Registered Nurse She worked the majority of her career at Pleasant Valley Hospital and at Holzer Medical Center. She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. She was a graduate of St. Mary's School of Nursing. She later received her BS in nursing from Ohio University. She was a member of the Gallipolis Emblem Club, Cliffside Golf Course, the Greedy Gals Investment Club in Gallipolis, and the Garden Clubs both in Gallipolis and in Tampa. She was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church.

She is survived by Daugher: Susan Jennings of Lawrenceville, GA; Son: Thomas C. (Lorene) Jennings III of Tampa; 4 Grandchildren: Gary, Kira, Cali, and Alea Jennings; Brothes and Sisters: Leonard (Toni) Sanna of Palmdale, CA, V.J. (Robert) Sanna Monarchy of Beckley, Samuel (Beverly) Sanna of Beckley, Barbara Sanna of Shadysprings, WV; Brother in law: Jack Sizemore of Beckley; Several other extended family members.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday March 29, 2006 at St. Louis Catholic Church with Monsignor William Myers officiating. Burial will follow in Mound Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home 810 Second Avenue Gallipolis, Ohio on Tuesday from 5-8 P.M. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Michael J.
