Cynthia Jo Baird

Cynthia Jo Baird went home to be with her savior and her Dad, Tuesday, April 16, 2013.
She was born August 17, 1951, at Gallipolis, Ohio, to Erma Earnestine Fraley Baird and the late Glenn O. Baird. She lived her life in Gallipolis, Ohio and graduated from Gallia Academy High School. After graduation, she worked at the Gal-Co Workshop for forty-one years. She was an active member of the First Church of God in Gallipolis. Cynthia and her mother, Erma, came three years ago to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Bill McKinney of Dora, Missouri. Cynthia was a volunteer at Ozarks Medical Center, West Plains, Missouri. She met many wonderful friends while working there. Cindy never met a stranger. She loved life and enjoyed family, traveling, quilting, youth group at Church of God, her Alpacas, piano, dulcimer and signing her praises to Our Lord. On April 10, 2010 she was diagnosed with Leukemia and fought a very hard battle. She endured seven months of Chemo at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis and other treatments at OMC in West Plains. She was a fighter to the end, always saying, “I am fine.” The cancer never took her soul. She was surrounded by many family members and friends when she went Home to be with Our Lord and her father. Living in Dora she was an active member of Union Grove Baptist Church. Cindy enjoyed singing in church every Sunday. She sang Sunday, April 14, a song which she lived by, “One Day at a Time, Sweet Jesus”. Cindy had a smile that you could never forget.
She is survived by her mother, Erma Baird, West Plains, Missouri, formerly of Gallipolis, Ohio; three sisters, Rebecca Pasquale, husband, John, Gallipolis, Ohio, Donna McKinney, husband, Bill, Dora, Missouri and Kimberly Bates, Jackson, Ohio; one brother, Ron Baird, wife, Phyllis, Jefferson, Georgia; twelve nieces and nephews; thirty-one great-nieces and great-nephews; and numerous great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Her father, one niece, Cassandra Canterbury and one nephew, Michael Pasquale, precede her in death.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM. Monday April 22, 2013 at the First Church of God in Gallipolis. Burial will follow in Pine Street cemetery. Friends may call at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral home on Sunday from 5-9 PM. and at the church on Monday from 10:00 AM. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Ozarks Medical Center Cancer Treatment Center.

Daniel 'Dan' P. Davies
Born: May 24, 1949
Died: October 24, 2013

Daniel P. Davies, 64, of Dublin, Ohio and formerly of Gallipolis, Ohio, passed away following a brief battle with cancer on Thursday, October 24, 2013.
He was born May 24, 1949 to the late D. Paul and Virginia Davies.
Dan grew up in Gallipolis and attended Gallia Academy High School, where he met the love of his life, Jackie Gilkey, whom he married in 1972. He received his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Heidelberg University, where he also played football and golf.
After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and attended Officer Candidate School in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, earning the rank of Second Lieutenant. Upon completing his military duties, he returned to Gallipolis and, in 1978, purchased Paul Davies Jewelers. He continued running the business, founded by his father in 1946, until he retired in 2010. In addition, he was President of Star Bank from 1989-1993 and a member of the bank’s board of directors from 1987-1992.
Dan was active in the community he loved. He served as both president and board member of numerous local organizations including the Gallipolis Retail Merchants Association, the Gallia County Community Improvement Corporation, the Gallia County Chamber of Commerce, the Ohio Valley Visitor’s Center, and the Gallia County Senior Resource Center. Beginning in 2004, he served on the Gallia County Board of Elections. In appreciation for his leadership, he was named Southeastern Ohio Man of the Year in 1987 and, in 2009, was recognized as a Friend of the Gallia County Visitor and Convention Bureau.
A lifelong Mason and member of the Elks, Dan was known for his vibrant and outgoing personality, along with his sense of humor. He loved playing golf, bicycling, and being outdoors. Having played football in his youth, he remained an avid fan of the sport, supporting both the Blue Devils and the Ohio State Buckeyes. A devoted husband and father, he enjoyed spending time with family and with friends as well. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
In addition to his wife, Jackie, he is survived by two children, Jamie (Dave) Riley of Delaware, Ohio and Morgan (Joe) Asbury of Galloway, Ohio; a sister, Kathleen Davies of Gahanna, Ohio; and one grandchild, Maggie Asbury.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, October 28, 2013, at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home with Pastors Marvin Sallee and Joe Asbury officiating. Burial will follow in Centenary cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 12 to 3 p.m. prior to the funeral service.
Military Funeral Honors will be presented by the Gallia County Veterans Funeral Detail.
Pallbearers will be: Dave Riley, Joe Asbury, Joey Gilkey, Chris Shaffer, Adam Dallas, and Cody Bobo.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Dan’s memory to the Gallipolis City Schools Treasurers Office 61 State St. Gallipolis, Ohio 45631 for Gallia Academy's new Stadium Project.

Hiram S. Stutes Jr.
Born: December 06, 1923
Died: March 19, 2015

Hiram S. Stutes Jr. age 91, of Thurman, left this life behind on Thursday morning March 19, 2015 at the Holzer Assisted Living Community in Gallipolis. Born December 6, 1923 in Blue Rock, Ohio he was the son of the late Hiram S. and Faye Ribble Stutes. In addition to his parents, Hiram was preceded in death by his siblings.
A graduate of Philo High School. On December 5, 1942 he married Maxine Murray, soon after the marriage he served in the 32nd Army Division in the South Pacific and was awarded several bronze stars. He retired from AEP at the Gavin Plant after 40 years of service. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Hiram is survived by his wife of 72 years, Maxine Stutes, along with three sons, Rodger (Ms. JP Listick) Stutes of Delray Beach, FL., Jim (Bonnie) Stutes of Gallipolis, and Tom (Patty) Stutes of the Villages, FL. Also surviving are five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM. Sunday March 22, 2015 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home with Bob Powell officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday 1 hour prior to services. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Hope Mausoleum at Ohio Valley Memory Gardens. Military Funeral Honors will be presented at the Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to either the Alzheimer’s Foundation or to the Grace United Methodist Church, where Hiram and Maxine were long time members.

Cecil Atkins
Born: July 06, 1925
Died: March 29, 2015

Cecil Atkins, age 89, of Gallipolis, and formerly of St. Albans, died Sunday March 29, 2015 at the Holzer Assisted Living facility in Gallipolis. Born July 6, 1925 in Layland, Fayette County, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Thomas Curtis and Mary Kosnoski Atkins. In addition to his parents, Cecil was preceded in death by his son, Dale M. Atkins, and a brother, Alfred A. “Joe” Atkins.
Cecil graduated from Kingston High School and enlisted in the Army. He served in the 35th infantry division in France during World War II. He was on the front lines for a year, when he was wounded, necessitating the amputation of his left leg. He received numerous medals and commendations for his service, including the French Legion Medal of Honor, and a Purple Heart. His memoirs of his World War II experiences are on file at the National World War II Memorial and he was included in the 35th divisions, Living History Project. After his Honorable discharge from the Army, he married Ruby Thomas Atkins on August 1, 1946. He graduated from the Capitol City Business College and began a career as an accountant, working for several small local businesses and later for the WV Department of Highways as Director of Finance. He was a member of St. Peter’s United Methodist Church and later attended Abney Street Church of God and Bible Center Church. He was the epitome of a Christian man and a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. His hobbies included golf and model railroading.
Cecil is survived by his wife, Ruby T. Atkins, daughter, Karen A. Wheeler of Pt. Pleasant, daughter in law, Vivian E. Atkins of Anderson, IN. grandson, Chris Atkins and his wife Shallen of McCordsville, IN. granddaughters, Katherine M. Phillips of Columbus, OH. and Kalena Wheeler of Pt. Pleasant, WV. great grandchildren, Savannah, Logan and Calvin Atkins of McCordsville, IN. sisters, Betty Price of Beckley, WV. Mary Ann Johnson of Greenville, TN. And several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM. Thursday, April 2, 2015 in the Chapel at Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans, with Charles Thomas officiating. Friends may call at the chapel on Thursday from 1:00 PM. until the time of service. Military Funeral Honors will be presented in the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Union Mission, PO. Box 112 Charleston, WV. 25321 or to the Appalachian Bible College, 161 College Dr. Mt. Hope, WV. 25880.

William Leland Gee
1943 - 2007
William Leland Gee, born February 22, 1943 to Armiet Allen and Gladys Blankenship Gee at Holzer Hospital on First Ave. in Gallipolis, died at 10:57 AM. on Sunday May 20, 2007 at Holzer Medical Center in Jackson, after an extended illness. He was preceded by both parents.

His survivors include his Wife, Elizabeth Harrison Gee, who he married on August 24, 1968 in Indianapolis, Indiana. His Sister, Lana (David Robert) Gee Chapman, Nieces and Nephews, Stephanie, Michael, William, and Joseph, and several Great Nieces and Nephews. Additional family members include, James Hedrick, Joanna (Ronald) Ballard Angel, and Phillip (Bonnie) Ballard and an Uncle, Willard Blankenship.

Bill was a teacher and minister. He was an Associate Pastor at the Potters Wheel Pentecostal Church.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM. Thursday May 24, 2007 at the Potters Wheel Pentecostal Church, burial will follow in Ebenezer cemetery on Mt. Carmel Road in Western Gallia County.

Friends may call at the Church on Wednesday from 2-8 PM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the William Gee Scholarship Fund c/o US Bank in Gallipolis.

Arrangements are under the direction of Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home.

Edward thomas Evans
1933 - 2006
Edward Thomas Evans, age 73, of Bidwell, died Friday evening October 20, 2006 at his residence. Born January 9, 1933 in Gallia County, he was the son of the late John Edward and Alma Kathleen Perkins Evans. In addition to his parents he was preceded by a brother, Jimmie Evans.
Edward was the former manager of Farmers Hardware in Gallipolis, and also previously worked at the Atomic Plant in Waverly. He for years was an active member of The Masonic Lodge and The Eastern Star.

He is survived by:

2 Nephews: Allen (Sylvia) Evans of Dripping Springs, TX.
Mark Evans of Remington, VA.
2 Nieces: Janice (Barry) Williams of Gallipolis
Barbara (Mark) Cline of Gallipolis

Services will be 2:00 PM. Friday October 27, 2006 at the Chapel of Hope at Ohio Valley Memory Gardens.

Mildred Marguerite Johnson / Gothard
1914 - 2006
Mildred Marguerite Johnson Gothard, age 92, of Gallipolis, died Sunday October 8, 2006 at Holzer Senior Care Center. Born April 23, 1914 in Sybene, Lawrence County, OH. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Mora Braley Walters. In addition to her parents she was preceded by her first Husband Forrest 'Runt' Johnson, by her second Husband, Fred Gothard, by a son Forrest Wayne Johnson, by 2 Brothers, Oak, and Kenneth Walters, and by a Sister, Lucille Lemon Brown.
Marguerite was an Avon Representative for over forty years.

She is survived by:

4 Daughters: Mary Lou Fellure of Gallipolis
Bette Meadows of Crown City
Donna Sims of Alamo, TX.
Wanda Ledinski of Columbus
10 Grandchildren, and 14 Great Grandchildren
2 Sisters: Helen Sheets of Crown City

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM. Wednesday October 11, 2006 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral Home with Rev. Alfred Holley officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Street cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral on Tuesday (today) from 4-8 PM.

Thelma M. Shaver
1915 - 2006
Thelma M. Shaver, age 91, of Gallipolis, died Thursday evening October 5, 2006 at Arbors at Gallipolis. Born December 10, 1915 in Meigs County. She was the daughter of the late Sterlie and Ora Baker Roush. In addition to her parents she was preceded by her husband, Charles W. Shaver, and by an infant daughter, Marie Annette Shaver.
Thelma attended Rio Grande College, and for a short time taught elementary school in the Gallia County Schools. She worked along side her husband in operating there farm for many years. She was a member of Addison Methodist Church where she was active in the Women's Association and served as the delegate of the Cheshire Charge. She was chairman of the Gallia County Blood Mobile for several years. She was also a charter member of the Gallipolis Garden Club.

She is survived by one Son, Robt. W. Shaver of Gallipolis, one Brother, Charles A. Roush of Cheshire, and one Sister, Delma Roush of Gallipolis.

Graveside services will be 3:30 PM. Monday October 9, 2006 at Reynolds cemetery, with Rev. Alfred Holley officiating. There will be no visitation.

Lori Ann Smith
1974 - 2006
Lori Ann Saunders Smith, age 32, of Vinton, died Thursday September 28, 2006 as a result of an automobile accident in Gallipolis. Born February 16, 1974 in Circleville, Ohio, her parents are Paul and Diane Johnson Swisher of Gallipolis, and her birth father Max Snider of Chillicothe.
Lori owned and operated her own Cleaning Service, and was a former member of the Ladies Auxilary of AMVETS and a former 1st Vice President.

In addition to her parents she is survived by:

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Monday October 2, 2006 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Mound Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 11 A.M. until time of service.

Eileane Opal Johnson
1922 - 2006
Eileane Opal Johnson, age 84, of Crown City, died Wednesday September 27, 2006 at Holzer Medical Center in Jackson. Born June 6, 1922 in Gallia County, she was the daughter of the late George and Sylvia Phillips Mooney. In addition to her parents she was preceded by her husband, Elbin Johnson, and by 7 brothers and sisters, Dorothy, Eva, Helen, Alvie, Leroy, Fred, and Clifford.
Eileane retired from the Columbus State Hospital, and was a member of the Eureka Church of Christ.

She is survived by:

3 Children: Gerreld Johnson of Crown City
Juanita Stainer of Columbus
Emogene Casteel of Crown City
6 Grandchildren, and 10 Great Grandchildren
1 Brother: Garland (Pauline) Mooney of Worthington, OH.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM. Saturday September 30, 2006 at Providence Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Providence cemetery. Friends may call at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. and at the Church on Saturday one hour prior to services.
