Eileen Cline Woodyard
ATHENS – Eileen Cline Woodyard, 80, of Athens passed away Monday, April 19, 2004 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center.
She was born on June 7, 1923 in Athens County. She was the daughter of the late William Everett and Bernice M. Stanley Saulters.
Eileen was raised in the home of Carl and Emma Morris. She graduated from Ames Bern High School in 1941. Eileen worked at McBee’s, Wright Patterson Air Field, Athens National Bank and Hocking Valley Bank. She was an active member of the Chauncey Friendly Circle Senior Citizen’s Club for many years and was a member of the Athens Church of Christ.
Eileen is survived by two sons, Greg (Beth) Cline of Athens, and Victor (Susan) Cline of New Marshfield; two granddaughters, Allison and Andrea Cline of New Marshfield; a step granddaughter, Shanda Lewis of Athens; and a brother, Larry (Wanda) Morris of Amesville.
Besides her parents, Eileen was preceded in death by her first husband Glen Roy Cline, and her second husband James B. Woodyard; and two brothers, Leslie and Paul Morris.
Services will be Friday at 11 AM at Hughes Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Rev. H. Willard Love officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 6 to 8 PM.
Robert S. Dean
ATHENS - Robert S. Dean, 70, of Athens, died Tuesday morning, April 13, 2004 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
Born Dec. 7, 1933 in Athens, he was the son of the late Clarence and Mary Koker Dean.
He was retired from Southern Ohio Coal Company. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the Athens VFW Post 3477 and the Athens AMVETS. He was a very loving and caring father and grandfather and will be missed.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Phyllis; two daughters, Sherry (Dan) Sickels of Athens, Shelly (Jeremy) Daniels of Athens; three grandchildren, Bobby Sickels, Tyler and Haley Daniels all of Athens; three brothers, Joe (Eleanor) Dean of Circleville, Ronald (Shirley) Dean of Williamsburg, VA, Frank (Peg) Dean of Lancaster, a sister, Flora Johnson of Athens.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dian Dowler and Mary Minthorne.
Services will be Friday at 1:00 PM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens with Rev. Denver Dodrill officiating. Military services will be conducted at the grave by Athens American Legion and Athens VFW.

Phyllis M. Lehlbach
ATHENS – Phyllis M. Lehlbach, 70, of Athens, died early Monday morning, August 2, 2004 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital.
She was born on April 13, 1934 in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Hollie E. and Hazel Plants Thomas.
She was a lifelong Athens resident and an Athens High School graduate. She spent many years co-managing Ohio University Inn with her husband Ray, and later retired from Ohio University (Chubb Hall).
She is survived by her husband, Ray; one son, Timothy (Annie) McDonald of Cincinnati; three stepsons, Larry (Bonnie) Lehlbach of Safety Harbor, FL., Dan Lehlbach of Berea, and Tim Lehlbach of Tampa, FL.; six grandchildren, Kelly and Amy McDonald, Mike Lehlbach and Kim Lehlbach Nottke, and Ariel and Danielle Lehlbach; and four great grandchildren; a brother, Wesley Thomas of Shade; a sister, Thelma Mae Irwin of Clinton; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by four brothers, Hollie Cleo, Kenneth D., Edward, and Richard Thomas; and three sisters, Clara M. Robinson, Louise Gillette and Dorothy Patterson.
Services will be Thursday at 1 PM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens with John Elswick officiating. Burial will be at Bates cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 to 8 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shrine Crippled Children, 3229 Burnet Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45229-3095.
Juanita Jones
CHAUNCEY – Juanita Jones, 88, of Chauncey, died Saturday, July 24, 2004 in Beverly.
Born Nov. 26, 1915, in Chauncey, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Estella Swart Jones.
She retired from Logan City Schools as a Secretarial Studies Teacher and taught 40 years in Athens, Geauga, Muskingum, Fairfield and Hocking Counties. She was a 1937 Ohio University Graduate. She was a 50 year member of the Eastern Star, life member of NEA, Ohio and Athens County Retired Teachers.
She is survived by a nephews, Lloyd Blackford of Heath; four nieces, Jeanette Carter of Crows, VA, Elizabeth Blackford of The Plains, Carolyn Blackford of The Plains, Lois Ann Bartlett of Williamstown, WV.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Nellie Blackford and a brother, Harold Jones.
Services will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens with Bill Carter officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery.

DALE SOUTH
ATHENS – Donald Dale South, 71, of Hockingport, formerly of the Athens area, died early Monday morning, July 12, 2004 at his home.
He was born July 22, 1932 in Athens, he was the son of the late John and Mary Rose Tucker South.
He was a graduate of Amesville High School and was a former employee of McBee’s and was one of the founders of Economy Supply. He was formerly self employed in the heating and cooling business.
He was a founding member of Hockingport Christian Center and was a US Navy veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Kay South; three sons, David (Theresa) South of Athens, Tom South of Dayton, Mark (Jill Well) South of Athens; two step sons, Keith (Christy) Young of Nelsonville, Dave (Carol) Willoughby of Athens; a step daughter, Lisa (Dr. Roland) Barr of Carbondale, Ill; seven grandchildren, Teather Royce, John, Mike, DJ, Christopher, Mathew and Maverick South; seven step grandchildren, Brandon and Derek Young, Austin and Tyler Willoughby, Garrett, Harrison and Weston Barr; three great grandchildren; a mother-in-law, Faye Marie Leonard of Coolville.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Barbara Shirley South; three brothers, Ellis, Glenn and Harvey South.
Services will be Friday at 11:00 am at Hockingport Christian Center with Rev. Sheldon Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Canaanville cemetery where military services will be conducted by the Athens American Legion and Athens VFW.

JEAN CARTER
SHADE - Alice Jean Carter, 75, of Shade, passed away Thursday evening, July 8, 2004 at Four Winds Community in Jackson, following a brief illness. She was born May 10, 1929 in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Elton Frost and Mary Bobo Frost Chubb.
She was a 1947 Athens High School graduate, a homemaker, loving wife and mother, and worked as the housekeeper for Chi Omega Sorority in Athens for many years. Because of her love and dedication she was graciously made an honorary sister for Chi Omega.
She is survived by a son, William A. (Cynthia) Carter Jr. of Shade; two daughters, Catherine (Steve) Thomas of Albany, and Constance Locke of Jackson; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren; three sisters, Catherine Tucker of Athens, Lulu (Victor) Carsey of Parkersburg, and Marilyn (William) Wilhelm of Montana; two brothers, Harry “Wimp” Frost and Edward (Janice) Chubb both of Athens; a brother-in-law Fred (Paula) Carter of California; two sisters-in-law, Mary Frost of The Plains, and Marjorie Carter of California; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Alfred Carter, Sr., her step-father, Warren Chubb; two brothers, Roscoe Frost and Robert Chubb.
Services will be Monday at 11 AM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Deborah Carsey Knotts, niece of the deceased officiating. Burial will be at Clarks Chapel cemetery.

Shirley Russell “Russ” Findling
ATHENS – Shirley Russell “Russ” Findling, 89, of Alfred, Ohio, died Friday, June 25, 2004 at Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster, Ohio.
He was born December 15, 1914, in Alfred, Ohio, and was the son of the late Herman and Iva Hawk Findling. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and served in European Theater. He was also a farmer and attended schools in Meigs County.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Koehler Findling; one brother, Harry of Carole, Ohio; one sister, Helen Findling of Coolville, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna; one brother, Carl, and one sister, Belle Reeves.
Services will be held at 11 AM, Monday, June 28, 2004 at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, Ohio, with Amos Tillis officiating. Burial will be in the Meigs Memory Gardens, Pomeroy, Ohio. Friends may car one hour prior to services.
Linda M. Smith
GLOUSTER - Linda M. Smith, 52, of Glouster died Monday June 21, 2004 at Riverside Hospital in Columbus.
Born August 22, 1951 in Mariah, NY, she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Flora Brassard Monette. She was employed at Ohio Public Employees Retirement Systems.
She is survived by her husband, Herman; four children, Tara (Ron) Riley of Glouster, Tom Smith of Columbus, Ron Smith of Mansfield, and Steve (Missy) Smith of Columbus; five grandchildren, Hunter Riley, Jennifer and Jacob Smith, and Zachary and Molly Smith; a sister, Betty (Edward) Benner of Columbus, Ohio; three brothers, Norman (Shirley) Monette of Mariah, NY., Maynard Monette of Canadaiqua, NY., and Morris (Marcia) Monette of Cape Cod, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Theresa Monette and Yvonne Clarke; and a granddaughter, Morgan Riley.
Services will be Friday at 11 AM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Pastor Ronald Smith officiating. Burial will be in Hilltop cemetery.

Jean Mayles
MILLFIELD – Magel Norajean “Jean” Mayles, 73, of Millfield died Thursday, June 17, 2004 at Doctor’s Hospital of Nelsonville.
She was born November 7, 1930 in Fairview, WV and was the daughter of the late Hazel Freeman and Ethel Mae Cook Varner. She was retired from Ohio University.
She is survived by her husband Delbert; four sons, Deward Mayles of Knoxville, TN, Patrick (Patricia) Mayles of Millfield, David (Debra Standley) Mayles of Glouster, and Timothy (Diana) Mayles of Millfield; two daughters, Peggy (Ed) Price of Millfield and Penny Ford of Millfield; 17 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; two brothers, Jacob (Louise) Varner of Millfield and Jordie (Martha) Varner of Duncan Falls; two sisters, Almeda Barber of Athens and Ruby (Haven) Van Fossen of Lecato, FL.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by a son, John Michael Mayles, one grandson Brian Mayles, one infant great granddaughter and two brothers, Bernard and William Varner.
Services will be Sunday at 1 PM at Hughes Moquin Funeral Home, Athens with Dave Cogar officiating. Burial will be at Hilltop cemetery.

Jerry R. Shumway
MILLFIELD – Jerry R. Shumway, 66, of Millfield went home to be with the Lord Monday, June 14, 2004 at the Arthur James Cancer Hospital, Columbus.
He was born March 9, 1938 in Millfield he was the son of the late Dwight and Clara Misner Shumway.
He was retired from Abex and a former WalMart employee. He had many hobbies including, carpentry, candle making, crafts and hunting.
He was a member of Oak Grove Wesleyan Church and attended The Bread of Life church.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.
He is survived by his wife, Lana; four children, Tressa (Walter) Burdette of Glouster, Jerry Lee (Cindy) Shumway of Buchtel, Tammy (Richard) Nichols of Millfield, Jeff (Amy) Shumway of Millfield; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a sister, Jeannette (Jerry) Williams of St. Clairsville; a brother, Jim Shumway of Nelsonville; and several nieces.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Toni Lynne Shumway.
Services will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens with Dave Cogar officiating. Burial will be in Hilltop cemetery.

Sylvia Matheney
ATHENS – Sylvia Matheney, 90, of The Plains, died Sunday afternoon, June 13, 2004 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center.
She was born on March 17, 1914 in The Plains. She was the daughter of the late George and Ida Mae Scurlock Potts.
She was a member of the New Life Assembly of God church and the Chauncey Senior Citizens Club.
She is survived by a daughter, Shirley (Merritt) Wilson of The Plains; a son, Bob (Mary) Sofronko of The Plains; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband, George Sofronko; her second husband, Edgar Matheney; four brothers, William, John, Walt, and Wilbur Potts; three sisters, Faye Hunter, Dorothy Bobo, and Marie Dalton.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 AM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Phil Foster officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery.

Robert "George" Judson
ATHENS – Robert “George” Judson, 57, of Guysville died unexpectedly Thursday June 10, 2004 in Meigs County.
Born July 15, 1946 in Guysville, he was the son of the late James and Beatrice Shannon Judson.
He was known as “Timbercutter” and worked as a timbercutter presently working many years for Ascraft Logging.
He is survived by his son, Robert (Maurina) Judson of Chesterhill; two daughters, Tammy (Donald) Eing of Millfield and Tracy (Keith) Clem of Stewart; his fiancé Robin Thornhill of Guysville; two stepdaughters, Sunshine (Roy) Roush of Guysville and Nicole Thornhill of Hanford, CA; a stepson, Nicholas Thornhill of Guysville and eleven grand children and one great grand child.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Sharon Judson.
Services will be Monday at 1 PM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with John Butcher officiating. Burial will be at South Canaan cemetery.
