Roger Bailey

ATHENS – Roger Bailey, 19, of Athens, passed away on September 17, 2003, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains, due to cystic fibrosis.
He was born in Athens on June 12, 1984, the son of Pamela Bailey of Athens.
Besides his mother, he is survived by two sisters, April (T.J.) Vale, their children Tanner and Tommy; and Victoria Jarvis; one brother Robert Bagley; maternal grandparents Barbara Lyons of Athens and Larry Lyons, Sr. of Chauncey; paternal grandparents Don and Charlotte Bailey of Nelsonville; an uncle Larry Lyons, Jr. of The Plains; and a very special friend Lacey Weekly.
Services will be held on Saturday, at 3:00 p.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Bill O’Brien officiating. Burial will be in Clarks Chapel cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

George R. Tucker

ATHENS – George R. Tucker, 85, of Athens, died Sunday, February 1, 2004, at Russell’s Nursing Home, Albany.
Born December 19, 1918, in Athens, he was the son of the late Leonard and Mary Baxter Tucker.
George was retired from Abex and served in the U.S. Army during WWII.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Catherine M. Tucker, two sons, Dick Tucker of Logan, and Herb Tucker of Athens; a daughter, Jeanie McCoy of Athens; ten grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three sisters; and one brother.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gary; and several brothers and sisters.
There will be no services at the request of the family. Arrangements are being handled by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.

Katherine Dunn Hartman

ATHENS – Katherine Dunn Hartman, 83, of Athens, died Friday morning, January 30, 2004, at her son’s home. She was born August 9, 1920, in Charleston, WV.
She is survived by three sons, Harold W. Jr. (Becky) Hartman of Athens, GA; Timothy (Kathy) Hartman of Athens, OH; and Roger (Barb) Hartman of Ft. Myers, FL; seven grandchildren, H.W. III, Tanya, Amber, Katie, Gregg, Brad Hartman, and Erica Boatright-Hartman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold W. Hartman.
Per Katherine’s wishes, her body has been donated to the West Virginia Medical School.
Arrangements are being handled by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.

Fern B. Cornell

ATHENS – Fern B. Cornell, 93, of Athens, died Monday, January 26, 2004, at Pine Hills Continuing Care Center of Nelsonville.
Born October 2, 1910, in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Albert F. and Rosa Vandyke Ballinger. She attended Athens High School and was employed at Royal McBee for 40 years.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Ruth Ballinger of Athens; a niece Jaynie (Steven) Pidcock of Athens; two nephews, Charles W. (Lynn) Ballinger of Scottsdale, AZ; and James W. (Brenda) Ballinger of Buchtel.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold K. Cornell, and her second husband, Raymond Cornell; a sister, Freda B. McDermitt; and two brothers, Wilfred H. Ballinger, and William P. Ballinger.
There will be a private graveside service for family members only. There will be no calling hours at the request of the family. Arrangements are being handled by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.
In lieu of flowers, you may send donations in Fern’s memory to Appalachian Community Hospice, 30 Herrold Avenue, Athens, 45701.

Ronald Neil Gilmore

THE PLAINS – Ronald Neil Gilmore, 66, of The Plains, died Sunday, January 25, 2004, at Logan Health Care Center, Logan.
Born November 8, 1937 in East Gulf, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Willis A. and Keith E. Clark Gilmore.
He was an Airforce veteran and was retired from the Athens Post Office, where he served as a Mail Carrier for 42 years. Ron was a past president of the National Association of Mail Carriers and was one of the top donors to the American Red Cross Blood Drive.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Marie (Thole) Gilmore; one daughter, Ronda (Wade) Poffenbarger of Albany; a step-daughter, Ann (Glen) Goins of Athens; a stepson, Michael Fletcher of Albany; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a brother, Clark Gilmore of Wisconsin; and a sister, Mari Klark of California.
Ronald was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday evening, at 7:00 p.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. until time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ron’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association of Central Ohio, 3380 Tremont Road, Columbus, Ohio 43221.

Olivia Gray Sole

ATHENS - Olivia Gray Sole, 14, of Athens died Saturday, January 24, 2004. Born July 31, 1989 in Athens, she was the loving daughter of John D. and Jan (Cawood) Sole.
Known to her friends as “Oie, ” she was a freshman honor student at Athens High School. A talented artist, dancer and pianist, she was loved dearly by all who knew her. Kind and full of fun and laughter, she had a style all her own. She was a true and caring friend, and the treasure of her parents’ lives.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandmother Celia Sole of Old Brookville, New York; uncle Carl Cawood of Columbus; aunts and uncles Claudia and Don Deere of Niwot, Colorado; Linda and Bruce Faul of Boulder, Colorado; Deborah Sole and Peter Rohowski of Far Hills, New Jersey; Mia Sole and Jeff Haycock of Rollinsville, Colorado; and many loving cousins.
She was preceded in death by grandparents, John Sole, Sr., Carl Cawood, and Betty Schoenbachler.
Friends and family are invited to call on Wednesday, 4-8 p.m. at the Ohio University Inn Ballroom, 331 Richland Avenue, Athens. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church at the corner of Court and Washington Streets, with Craig Seitz officiating. Burial will follow at Clark’s Chapel cemetery.
The family invites donations in Olivia’s memory to the McClure Foundation, 25 S. Plains Rd, The Plains, Ohio 45780. Gifts will be used to provide college scholarships to Athens High School graduates. Flowers are welcome at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home.

Herbert Thomas Taylor Wiley

ATHENS – Herbert Thomas Taylor Wiley, 39, of Athens, died Friday, January 23, 2004, in his home. Herbert was loved by all who knew him.
Born October 12, 1964, in Columbus, Ohio he is the son of Yvonne Noice, of Columbus, and Kenneth (Judy) Taylor of Columbus.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his children, Joey and Justin; two brothers, Kenneth Taylor and Joshua Taylor; two sisters, Dawn (David) Draper, and Wendy (John) Tomer; former wife, Carol Wiley; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at noon, at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.

Eulah Milum

ATHENS – Eulah Milum, 75, of Athens, died peacefully at her home, Friday, January 23, 2004, after an extended illness.
Born October 1, 1928, in Chattaroy, WV, she was the daughter of the late Boyd and Elizabeth Diamond Howard. Eulah was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Connie (Robert) Rankin of Athens, and Sandy (Gary Pratt) Patton of Athens; one son, Bob (Candy McCloud) Milum of Athens; four grandchildren, Eric Rankin, Pamela Stevenson, Jason Rankin, and Matthew Milum; five great grandchildren; one sister, Phyllis Savage of Kentucky; and one brother, Homer Howard of Kentucky.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Joe Milum.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m., at Christ the King Catholic Church, Athens, with Father Martin Holler officiating.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Appalachian Community Hospice, where memorial donations may be sent to P.O. Box 768, Athens, Ohio 45701.
Arrangements are being handled by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.

Frances K. Woogerd

Wife of Former Athens businessman dies...
DADE CITY, FL – Frances Kern Woogerd, 92, of Dade City, Florida, and formerly of Athens, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004, at Zephyr Haven Nursing Home in Zephyrhills, Florida.
Born March 13, 1911, in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Ethel Cable Kern. She and her late husband, Kenneth L. Woogerd founded both the Union Printing Company and the Athens Office Supply, before moving to Florida in 1973.
Frances is survived by two grandsons, Eric R. Owings of Florissant, CO, and Brian Keith Owings of Culver City, CA; four great-grandchildren, Autumn Owings of Missoula, MT, Jeanelle Owings of Gresham, OR, and Derek and Brandon Owings of Culver City, CA; and one great-great granddaughter, Haley Holm of Missoula, MT.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth in 1986; a daughter, Kay Sara Owings in 1995; a sister, Sara Jane Alvarez, and brothers, Theodore and Charles Kern.
Graveside services will be Sunday, February 1, 2004, at 1:00 p.m., at the West Union Street cemetery, Athens. There will be no calling hours at the request of the family. Arrangements are being handled by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.

David M. Wakeland

THE PLAINS – David M. Wakeland, 64, of The Plains, died Monday, January 19, 2004, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens.
Born April 25, 1939, in Bluefield, WV, he was the son of the late Ervin J., Sr. and Juanita Milam Wakeland.
David was a member of the IOE, Local 18 for over 30 years; he was a member of the Athens Elks Lodge #973; and a member of The Plains United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Cathy DeWeese-Wakeland; two daughters, Karen (Randy) Grider of Waverly, and Sandy (Randy) Southworth of Portsmouth; six grandchildren, Kristi, Chasity, J.R., Jasmine, Tiara, and Montana; four great grandchildren; two brothers, Robert (Mona) Wakeland of Grove City; George T. (Nancy) Wakeland of Duneden, FL; three sisters, Irene Steele of Matewan, WV, Patricia (Robert) Wilson of Grove City, and Veda (Michael) Noble of Dublin; a mother-in-law and father-in-law, Murven and Rosalee DeWeese of The Plains; a brother-in-law, Kerry (Dorothy) DeWeese of The Plains; a sister-in-law, Susan Tudor of Athens; several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Randall S. Wakeland of Dublin, and a special niece, Scarlett Tudor of Athens.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Ervin J. Wakeland, Jr.; a brother-in-law, Willis D. Steele; and a grandson, Isreal Freeland.
Services will be held Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Rev. David Roach officiating. Burial will be at Zion cemetery, The Plains.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 4-8 p.m.

Louella W. Rousey

ATHENS – Louella W. Rousey, 95, of Athens, died Friday evening, January 9, 2004, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.
Born August 26, 1908 in Lodi Township, she was the daughter of the late John Wandling and Mary Christman Wandling.
She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Barbara Rutter of Virginia Beach; a sister-in-law, Mary Wandling of Albany; and a special friend, Nancy Young of Nelsonville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Rousey; a son, Virgil W. Rutter; several sisters; and a brother.
Graveside services will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. at Mount Calvary cemetery, Athens, with Father Patrick Gaughan officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.

Rita A. Griffith

THE PLAINS – Rita A. Griffith, 54, of The Plains, died unexpectedly Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens.
Born November 17, 1949, she was the daughter of Charles S. and Martha Cole Johnson of West Virginia. Rita was employed by Rite Aid in The Plains.
She is survived by her husband, Mack Griffith of The Plains; four grandchildren, Jessica Church, Michael Fusik, Christopher Fusik, and Christina Fusik; two sisters, Sharon of Cleveland, and Karen of West Virginia; and one brother, Richard of West Virginia.
She was preceded in death by one son, Michael Griffith; one daughter, Pamela Fusik; and a grandson Johnathon Fusik.
Services will be held Saturday, 3:00 p.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Roger Powell officiating. Burial will be at Hooper Ridge cemetery, Athens.
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday, from 5-8 p.m.

Harry L. McGraw

ATHENS – Harry L. McGraw, 83, of Athens, died Friday evening, September 19, 2003, at his home.
Born August 28, 1920, in Sioux City Iowa, he was the son of the late Cleber and Marzella Marsh McGraw.
Harry proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty McGraw; four sons, Michael (Margaret) McGraw of Athens; Douglas (Cynthia) McGraw of St. Louis, MO; James (Barbara) McGraw of Ankeny, IA; and Kevin McGraw of Sioux City, IA; nine grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held in Sioux City, Iowa at the family’s convenience. Arrangements are being handled by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.
