Freda Annette Fishburn
Freda Annette (Rickenbacker) Fishburn was born May 19, 1916 on her parent's farm near Forest, OH. An only child, she started schooling at the one-room Jackson School nearby, but became a graduate of Forest High School and went on to obtain a teaching certificate from Ohio Northern University. She became a teacher, mostly in Allen Park, Michigan, where she spent 27 years teaching third grade. She was active in many aspects of the Allen Park school system to support providing the best education to young children. She always had an interest in stylish clothing and arts and crafts, producing her own outfits according to her own designs and making attractive decorative objects using a large number of different arts and crafts media. She had a good eye for color. She taught craft making to children as Cub Scout Den Mother and various community groups; she always found great delight in teaching and interacting with young children, both as vocation and avocation. Nearing retirement, she discovered golf and it quickly became a major enjoyment for the rest of her life. After retiring, she moved with her husband, Jack D. Fishburn of Forest, whom she married
in June, 1940, to Findlay to be near their elderly parents, played much golf, was active in Twig 17 providing fundraising (selling home made arts and crafts objects) and volunteer work for the Hospital and was active with the Garden Club with both gardening and flower arranging, once winning a prize for one of her floral creations. She continued to produce many artistic decorative objects throughout most of her life. She thrived on the social aspects of these activities, especially the people she met through golf. The Ohio Winter weather and inability to golf half the year motivated her to live the bad half year at a large golfing community (The Villages) in Florida mainly after her husband died in 1991. She greatly enjoyed the active life style promoted by The Villages and the many good friends she met there. She still played golf at 90, but in the late spring of 2007 she was seriously stricken with spinal stenosis while in Florida, necessitating moving into Birchaven nursing home in Findlay, as she suddenly could no longer walk. The loss of active life style and difficulty maintaining her social life that this engendered was a hard blow, greatly confining her remaining life. She died there Nov. 10, 2010 and is survived by a devoted son, Barry Fishburn, of Dover, New Jersey. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 15, 2010 at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay, where visitation will be held from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 14, 2010.
