Donald L. Baker
Donald L. Baker died August 6, 2005 at the Kimes Nursing and Convalescence Center in Athens, Ohio. He was 90 years old. He lived and worked for most of his life in the Cleveland, Ohio area. For 30 years he was with the former Lindsey Wire Weaving Company where he became Corporate Secretary and Industrial Relations Manager. He then undertook to make his hobby his vocation by embarking on a second career in keyboard sales with the Lukas Music Company. He retired in 1978 as a manager of Lukas Music Studio. Mr. Baker was a 1932 graduate of Shaw High School in East Cleveland, Ohio and attended Fenn and Cleveland Colleges. He was a fonner member of the Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce, the Cleveland Athletic Club, Pine Ridge Country Club and several Cleveland area yacht clubs where he was an avid sailor. He was an amateur genealogist and was proud of being able to trace his forbear's emigration from England to Connecticut in the mid-1600s and from there to the Western Reserve in the early 1800s. He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 60 years Jane Carr Baker and his daughter Susan Baker Gleason, who lived in Athens, OH. He is survived by his daughter Beverly (Bruce) Stanek of Linesville, PA, son-in-law Jim (Liz) Gleason of Athens, OH, a brother Gordon (Mary) Baker of Hendersonville,NC, nephew David, niece Pamela, three grandchildren Carole (Dan) Abdella of Athens, OH, Paul Gleason of Columbus, OH, Jennifer (Nicholas) Toth ofElon, NC, and three great-grandchildren Lauren and Sarah Abdella and Quinn Gleason. Lila Belle Wilson Campbell
Lila Belle Wilson Campbell, 55, of Glouster, passed away Friday August 5, 2005, at her residence. She was born June 3, 1950, in Logan. Lila is preceded in death by her father Arthur Wilson and is survived by her mother Dora Slater Wilson Waldeck of Glouster. She is also survived by three sons, Scott (Melanie) Alfman, Shane Campbell, Bruce Losey and his fiancé Cary Spears all of Glouster; eleven grandchildren; one sister, Cinda Umbarger of Athens. She is preceded in death by a brother Arthur 'Tug' Wilson. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 1 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home 30 Main St. Glouster, with Minister Roger Powell, officiating. Ida Mae Morrison Birtcher, 67, of Nelsonville, formerly of Logan, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2005, at Doctor‚s Hospital, Nelsonville. She was born February 20, 1938, in French Creek, West Virginia, daughter of the late Arthur James and Pearlie Mae Oney Morrison. She is survived by three sons, Donald Boals Jr. of Nelsonville, Jimmy Kornmiller of Lancaster and John Kornmiller of Michigan; five daughters, Tena Boals and her fiancé Mike Dexter of Nelsonville, Jean Ann Williams of Lancaster, Linda (Danny) Bell McCarty of Nelsonville, Sherry Oiler of Lancaster and Carla Kornmiller of Lancaster; several grandchildren; several great grandchildren; one brother, Leroy Morrison of Logan; five sisters, Imogene Karns of McArthur, Lulabell Webb of Athens, Virginia Lane of Texas, Della Mae Wright of Logan and Vera Lou Myers of Athens. She is preceded in death by three brothers, Scotty Morrison, Howard Morrison and Robert Arthur; two sisters, Thelma Casto and Ruth Fields. ATHENS - Bettie L. Stone, 95, of Athens died Thursday, August 25, 2005 at The Lindley Inn. She was born August 18, 1910 in Huntington, WV. To the late Charles and Vesta Bean Beverage. She was a beloved mother and grandmother, filled all of our lives with great joy, and will be missed very much. She is survived by a daughter, Dottie Silvus Smith of Athens; a son, Paul 'Dick' Silvus of Athens; four grandchildren, Tracy Rene Smith of Columbus, Paul D. Silvus of Brownwood, TX., Kellie Silvus of Houston, TX., and Debbie Silvus Wallace of Powder Springs, GA.; one great grandson, Doug Wallace of Powder Springs, GA.; one great great grandson, John Wallace; and three step sons, Richard, Emerson, and Paul Fredrick Stone. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Silvus; her second husband, Fred Stone; and her brother, Jack Beverage. Russell B. “Russ” Carsey
Russell B. “Russ” Carsey, age 86 of Athens died Friday morning, Sept. 23, 2005 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains. Born Jan. 21, 1919 in Athens he was the son of the late Russell B. & Elsie Daily Carsey, Sr. A graduate of Rome Canaan High School, Mr. Carsey was employed at McBee Corp. for 27 years and also worked for R.E. Wagoner & Sons as a contract mail carrier. He was a lifelong resident of Athens County and attended the Vore Ridge Community Church. Mr. Carsey was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War II serving in the European Theatre where he received 4 Bronze Stars and the Distinguished Unit Badge. He is survived by his wife Luta Burke Carsey; three daughters- Judy (Jim) Deardorff of Athens, Cheryl (Ed) Lee of Charlestown, WV and Pam Stanley of New Marshfield; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a brother, Jack Carsey of Middleport; two nieces; a brother in law, Gerald Blair of Nelsonville and a sister in law, Dorris Bacus of Athens. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by a son in law, Mike Stanley, a sister in law, Edna Blair and a nephew, Kelly Blair. Walden C. "Snack" Deal, 86, of Jacksonville, passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2005, at Mark Rest Center in McConnelsville. He was born November 7, 1918, in Jacksonville, son of the late John and Agnes (Barrett) Deal. He was married

ATHENS – Everett E. Barnhart, 94 of Athens died early Wednesday morning, August 17, 2005, at Logan Healthcare Center. He was born September 1, 1910 in Athens and was the son of the late John R. and Nellie M. Rhodehaver Barnhart. He was a US Army Veteran of World War II. Charles William Cheatham
Charles William Cheatham, 76, of Jacksonville, passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2005, at Hickory Creek Nursing Home in The Plains. He was born January 6, 1929, in Middleport, son of the late Elsworth and Lillian Cheatham. He is preceded in death by his 1st wife Mary Ann Cheatham and is survived by his 2nd wife Alice C. Leedy Cheatham of The Plains. Charles joined the Army when he was 17 years old, training in camps at Fort Knox, KY, Camp Atterbury, IN, Camp Stoneman, CA and serving during WWII. He was an honorable member of A.F.O.P. & C.I.A., reported for the Police Times Magazine and a member of the Redtown Church. He is survived by four sons, Larry Robinson of Green Valley, OH, Roy (Pamela) Robinson of Shade, John R. (Sharon) Cox of Chillicothe and Alvin Robinson Jr. of Columbus; seven daughters, Mary Louise Dixon of Shade, Patricia Robinson of Albany, Kim Sue (Frank) Icker of Shade, Marilyn (John) Icker of Albany, Jackie Robinson of Albany, Kathy (Rick) McGee of Chauncey and Liz Robinson of Shade; several grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one sister, Alice May Donley of Erie, PA. In addition to his parents and first wife Mary Ann Charles was preceded in death by a son Wyatt Robinson and a brother Larry E. Cheatham. Frederick Michael (Fred) Cluff
Frederick Michael (Fred) Cluff, 59, of Athens, a well-known and long-time Athens businessman, died in an automobile accident in Hocking County on Aug. 8, 2005. Born on March 26,1946, in Hillsboro, Ohio, he grew up on a farm in Boston, Ohio, near Hillsboro. A star athlete at Hillsboro High School, Fred received a basketball scholarship from Ohio University in 1964. Forty years ago, he arrived in Athens as a 6-7, 230-pound forward for the Bobcat basketball team and right-handed pitcher for the Ohio baseball squad. He played for legendary coaches Jim Snyder in basketball and Bob Wren in baseball. He averaged 8.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game in 1965-66 as a sophomore, 11.8 points and 7.6 rebound in 1966-67 as a junior, and 10.1 points and 7.0 rebounds in 1967-68 as a senior. Despite missing the last seven games of his senior campaign due to an ankle injury, Fred was still named to the Mid-American Conference All-Academic Team. As a baseball player, Fred pitched one inning during the 1966 season and appeared in 10 games during the 1967 campaign. He had to sit out the entire 1968 season after suffering the basketball injury. Fred received his B.S. in economics in 1968 and an MBA from Ohio University in 1970. He worked in the University's budget office following graduation. In 1972, he and Dwight Pugh opened the Baron Men's Shop at 67 South Court Street in Athens, directly across from the University's College Green. Pugh sold his interest to Mr. Cluff in 1989, and he operated the store at the same location at the time of his death. A dedicated businessman, Fred took great pride in the appearance of the Uptown Athens area. At least once a month, he could be seen power washing the sidewalk in front of the store. The Athens Uptown Business Association is renaming its Uptown Pride Award to the Fred Cluff Uptown Pride Award. A longtime supporter of Ohio University and its Athletics Department in particular, Fred was also a member of the Athens Chamber of Commerce, the Athens Uptown Business Association, the Athens Country Club, the Green and White Club, the Elks Club, and attended the Plains United Methodist Church. An avid golfer, Fred also loved harness racing. He had attended the famous Little Brown Jug championship in Delaware, Ohio, every year for the past 32 years. Mr. Cluff is survived by his wife of fourteen years, Marsha Kay Cluff of Athens; a stepdaughter, Andrea Kay (Jim) Athens of Altus, Oklahoma; a stepson, Allan (Carrie) Smith of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren Griffin A. Athens, 6, and Grantley J., 22 months, of Altus, Oklahoma; one aunt, Freda Schug of Dayton; a brother, Jim (Mary Ellen) of Hillsboro; nephews, Jim and Jerry, of Hillsboro; a niece, Jennifer, of Hillsboro; several cousins and many, many friends too numerous to mention. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Martha Cluff of Hillsboro. A memorial service will be held at The Plains United Methodist Church on Sunday, August 28, at 2p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Ohio University Athletic Department in Mr. Cluff’s name, c/o Ohio University Foundation, P.O. William “Bill” F. Jenkins
William “Bill” F. Jenkins, 58, of The Plains, passed away Thursday, September 22, 2005 at Doctors Hospital in Nelsonville. He was born May 1, 1947 in Lawrence County, Ohio, the son of the late John and Pearl Marie (Boggs) Jenkins. He was married
to Ila Marie (Katzenbach) Jenkins for over 30 years. She survives. Bill attended The Plains Nazarene Church, and was an excellent woodworker. In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by three sisters, Norma Ison of Huntington W.Va., Mary (Tom) Dickess of Ironton, and Ruby Mart of Springfield. Bill was preceded in death by brothers Everett and Junior Riley, Lester and James Bruce, and a sister, Lacie Rhodes. She was born May 6, 1922, in Fort Recovery, Ohio, daughter of the late Henry and Veronica Fecher Fullenkamp. She was a member of West Pleasant Hill United Brethren Church. Mary is survived by six sons, Harold (Bonnie) Kidwell of Groveport, Robert (Annie) Wagner of Dayton, Louis (Teresa) Kidwell of Stewart, James (Sandy) Kidwell of Pataskala, Henry (Anna) Carter of Buckeye Lake, and Floyd (Catherine) Carter Jr. of Logan; six daughters, Laura (Delbert) Beavers of Logan, Alice Augustad of Kentucky, Kathy (Don) Keeney of Logan, Mary Carter of Newark, Dottie (James) Morrison of Albany, and Nellie Carter of Logan; many grandchildren, and several great grandchildren; one brother, Joseph Fullenkamp of Dayton; two sisters, Henrietta Schindler and Esther Rauch, both of Dayton. Gordon Smith
Gordon Smith, age 73 of Shade died early Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 20, 2005 at his home. Born Oct. 13, 1931 in Athens County, he was the son of the late Pearly & Hazel Rachel Linscott Smith. A longtime Athens County resident, he attended school at Mechanicsburg. Mr. Smith was an automobile mechanic, working at several services stations including Firestone in Athens. Mr. Smith was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, where he received three bronze battle stars. He is survived by a daughter, Connie (Jim) Dishong of Shade; four sons- Ron Smith of The Plains, Jeff (Judy) Smith of Shade, David (Jenni) Smith of Shade and Michael Smith of Circle Hill; 12 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; three sisters- Betty Arnold of Athens, Joyce (Bob) Meeks of Guysville, and Donna (Jeff) Whitlatch of Athens; two brothers- Charles (Shirley) Smith of The Plains and Jerry (Ginger) Smith of Coolville; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by a son, Ricky Smith; a niece, Lynn Ross; two sisters- Pearl McClain and Helen Fish; a brother, Joe Smith. Evan L. Boswell, 90, of Coshocton, formerly of Glouster, passed away Thursday, September 15, 2005, at the Coshocton Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born February 23, 1915, in Corning, the son of the late William and Elma (Frasure) Boswell. He was married
to the late Katherine (Zimmer) Boswell, who passed away previously. Evan was an Army Veteran of WWII, a former electrician, and retired from the Glouster Post Office. He was a member of the Corning Eagles, the Coshocton American Legion, and was a life member of the Buckeye State Disabled American Veterans. He is survived by one son, Greg Boswell of Coshocton. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Herb and Emery Boswell, and one sister, Pansy Marie Boswell. Funeral services will be held Monday, 2 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, 30 Main St. Glouster. Interment will be in Maplewood cemetery, Glouster. ATHENS - Mary M. Frost, 69, of The Plains, died Saturday morning, September 10, 2005 at her home. She was born February 26, 1936 in The Plains and was the daughter of the late Pearl O. and Margretta Bishop Phillips. She was a lifetime member of the Jacksonville VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was a former employee at the OU Inn with 23 years of service and donated the flag pole presently in front of the OU Inn. She is survived by two sons, Elton R. (Martha A.) Frost, and Warren E. (Diane) Frost both of The Plains; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; three sisters, Pearl, Rose and Zeta; and four brothers, Gib, Oak, Dick and Harvey.
