Bertha Louise Vermillion

VERMILLION -- Bertha Louise Vermillion, 98, passed away in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, following a brief illness. Mrs. Vermillion was born to the late William and Carrie Brigner in Pike County, Ohio, where she grew up. With dreams of becoming a teacher, she entered Ohio University in 1925, where she met Monroe Vermillion, then a student teaching assistant. June 5, 1929, she and Monroe were married . In 1927, Monroe became a member of the faculty of the Botany Department, and they continued living in Athens. She graduated from Ohio University in 1930, with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree, and began her teaching career as an art teacher in the Parkersburg Public Schools. When their children--Art, Monia, and Gary--were young, Bertha was a "stay at home mom." Later she did substitute teaching in Art and Science in the Athens area and then half-time teaching in the Albany schools. In 1992, Bertha and Monroe celebrated 63 years of marriage. Bertha's love for children, teaching, and the church were combined for several years in her leadership in children's Sunday School in the Athens First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where she and Monroe were both long-time, very active members. Her ecumenical view of "church," along with her desire for a more Christian observance of Christmas inspired her leadership of "The Christmas Page"--featuring creativity of children--which, for several years, has been appearing in The Athens Messenger. Her pastimes focused on children, grandchildren, and flowers, as well as sketching, painting, and photography.. She is survived by a sister, Beatrice Shrum, Laurinburg, North Carolina; a son, Gary, of Athens; a daughter Monia Alexander and husband Bob, Fort Wayne; and a son, Art, and his wife, Pauline, Indianapolis. She has eight grandchildren: Troy Vermillion and Matt Vermillion of Athens; Mike Alexander, Auburn, Indiana; Cheryl Fabian, Diane Hille, and Curtis Alexander, all of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and Joy Rose and Brian Vermillion of Indianapolis, Indiana. Her great granchildren number 17. Besides her husband, Monroe, she was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and three brothers. Services will be Saturday, 1:00 p.m., at Athens First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Committal service and burial will be in Athens County Memory Gardens. Friends may call at Jagers Funeral Home Friday evening, June 11, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., and at the church for an hour preceding the service Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Christian Education Memorial Fund of Athens First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 24 W. State Street at Congress, Athens; or to the Appalachian Visiting Nurses Association PO Box 768 Athens 45701.
