Kenneth C. Davis
Kenneth C. Davis, 79, of Nelsonville, passed away Monday, May 10, 2004, at Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster. He was born August 20, 1924, in Nelsonville, son of the late Branson Spangle and Ruth Mills Davis. Kenneth was the Chief of Police for Nelsonville, a member of the Nelsonville Church of the Epiphany, Moose Lodge #873, F.O.E. Post #391, V.F.W. Post #7174, Elks Lodge #973, F. &.A.M. Paramuthia Lodge #25 of Athens in the Scottish Rite and also being a Knights Templar, Alladin Temple of Columbus. Kenneth proudly served his country in WWII in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was also a Marine Corps League Lifetime Member of the Belleau Wood Detachment out of Columbus. He is survived by three daughters, Margie (Neil) Collins of Nelsonville, Christy (Ron) Dane of Logan and Debbie (Bob) Badger of Marietta; ten grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; two brothers, Robert (Molly) Davis of Welaka, Florida and Bernard (Shirley) Davis of Buchtel; one sister, Carol Sue (Paul) Spradling of Cross Lanes, West Virginia; several nieces and nephews; special life long friend Jimmy Knight. He is preceded in death by three brothers, Harold Davis, Gerald "Joe" Davis and David Davis; two sisters, Margie Davis and Wilda Eileen Houck. Funeral services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home 46 Fayette St. Nelsonville. Interment will be in Greenlawn cemetery, Nelsonville where military honors will be conducted by the combined Color Guard Unit. NELSONVILLE Magel Norajean "Jean" Mayles, 73, of Millfield died Thursday, June 17, 2004 at Doctor's Hospital of Nelsonville. She was born November 7, 1930 in Fairview, WV and was the daughter of the late Hazel Freeman and Ethel Mae Cook Varner. She was retired from Ohio University. She is survived by her husband Delbert; four sons, Deward Mayles of Knoxville,TN, Patrick (Patricia) Mayles of Millfield, David (Debra Standley) Mayles of Glouster, and Timothy (Diana) Mayles of Millfield; two daughters, Peggy (Ed) Price of Millfield and Penny Ford of Millfield; 17 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; two brothers, Jacob (Louise) Varner of Millfield and Jordie (Martha) Varner of Duncan Falls; two sisters, Almeda Barber of Athens and Ruby (Haven) Van Fossen of Lecato, FL. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by a son, John Michael Mayles, one grandson Brian Mayles, one infant great granddaughter and two brothers, Bernard and William Varner. Services will be Sunday at 1 PM at Hughes Moquin Funeral Home, Athens with Dave Cogar officiating. Burial will be at Hilltop cemetery. Eileen Cline Woodyard
ATHENS - Eileen Cline Woodyard, 80, of Athens passed away Monday, April 19, 2004 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center. She was born on June 7, 1923 in Athens County. She was the daughter of the late William Everett and Bernice M. Stanley Saulters. Eileen was raised in the home of Carl and Emma Morris. She graduated from Ames Bern High School in 1941. Eileen worked at McBee's, Wright Patterson Air Field, Athens National Bank and Hocking Valley Bank. She was an active member of the Chauncey Friendly Circle Senior Citizen's Club for many years and was a member of the Athens Church of Christ. Eileen is survived by two sons, Greg (Beth) Cline of Athens, and Victor (Susan) Cline of New Marshfield; two granddaughters, Allison and Andrea Cline of New Marshfield; a step granddaughter, Shanda Lewis of Athens; and a brother, Larry (Wanda) Morris of Amesville. Besides her parents, Eileen was preceded in death by her first husband Glen Roy Cline, and her second husband James B. Woodyard; and two brothers, Leslie and Paul Morris. Kerry W. DeWeese
ATHENS - Kerry W. DeWeese, 53, of The Plains, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004 at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital. Born March 4, 1951 in Athens, he was the son of Murven and Rosalee Metcalf DeWeese of The Plains. He was a 1970 graduate of Athens High School and employed with Ohio University for over 20 years. He was a member of the Athens Masonic Paramuthia Lodge 25 F and AM and was an avid hunter and bass fisherman, and also an avid Bengal‚s and Red‚s fan. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Dorothy; two sons, Steven DeWeese of Virginia and Joshua DeWeese of Columbus; two sisters, Cathy DeWeese-Wakeland of The Plains and Susan Tudor of Athens; a special niece, Scarlett Tudor of Athens. John B. (Jack) Heaton
ATHENS - John B. (Jack) Heaton, 92, of Athens, died Friday morning, April 30, 2004 at Kimes Nursing Home, Athens. Born July 25, 1911, in Superior, Wisconsin, he was the son of the late Everett and Jesse Heaton. He spent most of his working life in the tire industry and was for many years the District Manager in the areas of Michigan and Ohio for Kelly Springfield before finishing his career as owner of a tire store in Detroit, Michigan. He is survived by his sons, James (Bonnie) Heaton of Export, Pennsylvania and David (Jeanne) Heaton of Athens; grandsons David Heaton of Cary, North Carolina, Geoffrey Heaton of New Alexandria, Pennsylvania, Christopher Heaton of Ann Arbor, Michigan; granddaughters Jeanne Heaton of New York City and Caroline Heaton of Gulf Shores, Alabama; great-grandchildren John, Anna and Emma Heaton of Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is also survived by Jeanne (David) Heaton‚s daughter Shannon O‚Leary of San Francisco and her son, Kevin O‚Leary of Davis, California; Bonnie Heaton‚s daughters Leah (Ken) McPherson of Greensboro, North Carolina and Courtney (John) Waugh/Critchley of London, Ontario, Canada and by the McPherson‚s son, Noah. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Jean Mingis Heaton and Elva Mix Heaton, and his brother Daniel. ATHENS - Ruth Lowry Ulbrich, 85, of Athens, died Monday, May 10, 2004 in Pittsburgh, PA. Born August 19, 1918 in Hocking County, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Elizabeth Shingler Lowry. She was a retired secretary from Ohio University and was a member of Alexander Presbyterian Church where she was an Elder and member of the choir. She is survived by a daughter, Ramona (Alan) Moore of Peoria, IL.; a son Darrell (Susie) Ulbrich of Bridgeville, PA; three grandchildren, Brian Ulbrich, Erin Doman, Andrew Moore; a sister, Marjorie Stright of Athens. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell H. Ulbrich, Sr.; a brother, Gene Lowry. Services will be Thursday at 11:00 A.M at the Alexander Presbyterian Church with Pastor Ed Brown officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens. Bertha P. Woodson
Bertha (Bert) P. Woodson, 97, of Nelsonville, passed away Monday, May 10th, 2004 at Pine Hills Nursing Home in Nelsonville. She was born July 2nd, 1906 in Glouster, the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth (Tabler) Payton. She was the widow of the late Cecil Woodson who passed away July 12th, 1975. Bert was a graduate of the Glouster High School Class of 1924, and attended Ohio University in Athens. After retirement, she worked with the Senior Citizens for 35 years and the Lunch Bunch for six years at the First United Methodist Church in Nelsonville. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Glouster She is survived by several nephews and nieces, including Ada Woodson Adams, and very special friends Dorothy Gettle, Ellen Prater, Jackie Covert, and Ruth Tedrow. In addition to her parents and husband, Bert was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, May 12th, 2004 at Souers- Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville. Interment will be at Greenlawn cemetery. ATHENS - Frederick "Freddie" E. Landis, 87, of Athens, died Friday, May 7, 2004 at his home. Born March 11, 1917 in Athens, he was the son of the late Earl and Sadie Robinson Landis. He formerly owned and operated Landot Auto Parts and proudly served in the south pacific in the US Army during WWII. He was a member of the Athens American Legion Post 21, Athens VFW post 3477, and the Chauncey AMVETS post 53. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, seven children, Connie (Bob) Thompson of Athens, Becky (Sandy) Harold of Columbus, Earl (Nancy) Landis of Athens, Maggie (Larry) Thomas of Athens, Judy (Bob) Courtney of Athens, Mary (Tom) Wheatley of Athens, Jim (Linda) Landis of Norfolk, VA; 15 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; a sister, Jeanette (Stan) Howdyshell of Cuyahoga Falls.. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Services will be Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at, Athens. Burial will be in West Union Street cemetery where military services will be conducted by the American Legion Post 21 and Athens VFW Post 3477. Jimmy Dale Crosno, 51, of Trumann, Arkansas, formerly of Logan, passed away Sunday, May 16, 2004, in Trumann, Arkansas. He was born October 5, 1952, in Harrisburg, Arkansas, son of the late Clintie B. and Mildred Volner Crosno. Jimmy served in the Army during Vietnam and also was a member of the V.F.W. He is survived by a son, Jimmy V. Crosno of San Leandro, California; one daughter, Jody Crosno of Lexington, Kentucky; two sisters, Carol (Tommy) Dukes of Drakesboro, Kentucky and Earlene (Bobby) Swinford of Gary, Indiana; a niece Deanna (Will) Isbell of Harrisburg, Arkansas; several nieces and nephews.
