Harry M. 'Moe' Byrne

Harry M. "Moe" Byrne, 83, 73 Douglas St., Tiffin, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at his home.

He was born Aug. 25, 1918, in Tiffin, to the late Harry Edward and Mable (Houk) Byrne. On May 18, 1940, in Tiffin, he married Phyllis M. Decker, who survives.

Other survivors include: children, Anna Lou Morehart of Sandusky, Larry J. Byrne and Mrs. Kenneth (Nancy) Yoakum Sr., both of Tiffin; Mrs. James (Nanette) Kimball of Bellevue and Robert W. Byrne, also of Tiffin; a brother, Bill Byrne of Vero Beach, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A retired milkman, having worked for Tiffin Dairy (formerly the Pure Milk and Dairy), Mr. Byrne also retired from the General Electric as a hoist operator. He worked for a short time at the National Machinery.

There will be a private graveside service at a later date. The Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to his family.

Milton E. Hoffman Jr.

Milton "Gene" E. Hoffman, Jr., 74, of Toledo, departed this earthly life and went to his heavenly home on Monday, July 29, 2002.

He was born on March 30, 1928, to Milton, Sr. and Christine (Snyder) Hoffman. Gene graduated from Tiffin University and was a WW II Army Veteran. He was a Toledo police officer for 27 years, retiring as a Captain, in November of 1981. He was a member of the F.O.P. Lodge 40 and a member of Calvary Bible Chapel. Mr. Hoffman was a sports fanatic, with his favorite teams being the Toledo Rockets, Cleveland Indians and the Browns. He was a wonderful and loving father, who taught us no matter how dire the situation, don't ever give up. He was always strong and never complained. He taught us to have a sense of humor and was always ready to pull a practical joke on some unsuspecting friend or family member.

Gene is survived by his sons: Ron (Sharon) and Gary Hoffman; daughters: Jackie (Dan) Patton, Julie (Paul) Shively and Karrie Miller. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, special friend, Ruth Wendt, as well as, sisters, Anita Minard and Helen Mayberry.

Friends may call at the Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Ave., Toledo (419) 382-1700 from 2-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1. A Fraternal Order of Police service will be at 7 p.m., followed by the funeral services at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Gene's name may be given to Calvary Bible Chapel or the Multiple Sclerosis Society. The family would like to thank Dr. Jeanine Huttner and Visiting Nurse Hospice, especially Maureen, for all their care and support.

Frances Amelia Clark

Frances Amelia Clark, 86, of Cambridge, Ohio, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at the Red Carpet Health Center, following a lengthy illness.

She was born March 9, 1916, in England. She married Ralph Jessie Clark Sr. during World War II. He preceded her in death in June 1974.

Surviving are a daughter, Edie Wood of Tiffin and six other daughters and two sons in Southern Ohio and a son in Nevada, 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Cambridge. Burial will be in Adamsville.

Ella Mae Overmire

Ella Mae Overmire, 86, of Good Shepherd Home, Fostoria, and formerly of 22971 SR 613, Fostoria, died 12:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Fostoria Community Hospital.

She was born March 11, 1916, in Wellston to the late William and Katie (Churtz) Ponn. She married Carl. L. Overmire Oct. 24, 1935, in Kentucky. He died Oct. 5, 1998.

Surviving are: a son, Ronald David Overmire of San Antonio, Texas; three daughters, Kathy J. Burnett and Lori Ann Overmire of Fostoria and Connie Sue Taylor of Bowling Green; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Her funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Church of the Nazarene in Fostoria. Burial will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Mann-Hare Funeral Home in Fostoria, and one hour prior to services at the church Wednesday.

Richard A. (Dick) Funkhouser

Richard A. (Dick) Funkhouser, 75, of 206 E. Tiffin St., Attica, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at his home after a sudden illness.

He was born Dec. 26, 1926, in Attica, to Gilbert and Nema (Sutphin) Funkhouser. He married Elaine L. Armitage Nov. 13, 1947, in Angola, Ind. She survives in Attica.

Other survivors include: a son, Richard (Thomas) Funkhouser of Danville, Ky; two daughters, Mrs. Roxann (James) Young of New Washington and Mrs. June Ellen (Steve) Elder of Derby, Kansas; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Mr. Funkhouser was a Motorist Mutual Insurance agent for many years and was also employed at Pioneer Rubber Co. for 20 years as a laborer. He then was a customer service representative for Farmers State Bank in New Washington, retiring in 2000.

Mr. Funkhouser was a member of the Attica United Methodist Church, a member of the Gideons, a World War II Navy veteran, a 50-year member of the Attica American Legion and a former Attica mayor and councilman, An avid OSU and Cleveland Indians fan, he was an umpire for high school softball and baseball, being honored as a Ohio Softball Official of the Year in 1993 and 1998.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Attica United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Thom Kalb officiating. Burial will be in Attica-Venice cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home, 3085 S. S.R. 19, Bloomville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Jan E. Lovelace

Jan E. (Baker) Lovelace, 43, of Vermilion died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Community Health Partners Hospital, Lorain, following a nine-month illness.

She was born Aug. 25, 1958, in Columbus. She moved to Amherst in 1970.

She graduated from Marion L. Steele High School, Amherst, in 1976, and attended Lorain County Community College for two years.

Mrs. Lovelace started to work at Invacare Corp., Elyria-North Ridgeville, in 1981 as a brazer in the factory and advanced to director of human resources. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Vermilion.

Survivors include her husband of 25 years, David S.; daughters, Amanda of Toledo and McKenna and Alena, both at home; parents, Clarence and Noretta (Clemmer) Baker of Tiffin; sister, Teresa Spelich of Raleigh, N.C.; and brother, Rick Baker of Tiffin. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, George and Jeanette Flowers and Ruben and Florence Baker.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at the Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, Amherst, with the Rev. George Vrabel of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amherst, officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph cemetery, Amherst.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 43099 N. Ridge Rd., Elyria,, Ohio 44035.

Bernard H. Halbeisen

Bernard H. Halbeisen, 81, of East State St., Fremont, died Sunday, August 4, 2002, at St. Francis Health Care Center in Green Springs.

He was born Dec. 14, 1920, in Fremont, to the late Rupert and Lucille Hinckley Soule Halbisen. After the death of his first wife, his father married his stepmother, the late Clara (Shessler) Halbisen. On Sept. 27, 1947, he married Shirley (Gardner) Halbeisen. She survives in Fremont.

Other survivors include: a son, Brock Halbeisen of Huron; four daughters, Mrs. Rynda Stover of West Jefferson, Mrs. Veda Rugula of Westerville, Mrs. Renee Goebel and Mrs. Cana Szymanowski, both of Fremont; three brothers, Neil Halbisen of Fairborn, Rupert Halbisen and Robert Halbisen, both of Fremont; six sisters, Jeanne Herman of Bellevue, Karen Wammas of Fremont, Mary Ann Wensinger of Fremont, Margaret Heishman of Clyde and Doris Seaman of Fremont; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Halbeisen was a U.S. Army WW II veteran, serving in the 37th Division, unit 148, out of Clyde.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Clyde. Burial will be in the Veteran's Section at McPherson cemetery.

Family and friends will meet with the Halbeisen's at the Funeral Luncheon following the Mass, at St. Mary's Parish Hall.

Memorials may be made to St. Francis Health Care Center, St. Mary's Catholic Church or to a charity of the donor's choice.

The Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert J. Hammer

Robert J. Hammer, 79, of 6817 W. SR 18, Fostoria, died at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 14, 1923, in Tiffin, to the late Joseph H. and Julia (Bodart) Hammer. On April 20, 1948, in St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria, he married Lucille D. Frankart. She survives in Fostoria.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Carol Yeager of Columbus and Joyce Hammer of Toledo; three sons, Duane (Mary Jo) Hammer of Fostoria, James (Lisa) Hammer of North Olmsted and Kevin Hammer of Toledo; seven grandchildren; and a brother, Herbert Hammer of Tiffin. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Wilfred Hammer.

A retired lifelong Seneca County farmer, Mr. Hammer was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran. He served in the European Theater as a radio operator. A 1941 graduate of Hopewell-Loudon High School, his memberships and affiliations included: St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Bascom; 50 year member of New Riegel American Legion 354; honorary 3rd degree life member of Knights of Columbus Council 1197, Fostoria; a former parish councilman, board of director of Bascom Elevator, board of directors Bascom Fire Dept., Ohio Polka Boosters, New Riegel Moose and the Hopewell Township Zoning Board.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, where the rosary will be prayed at 9:40 a.m. Burial will be in St. Wendelin Parish cemetery, Fostoria, with the New Riegel American Legion conducting military funeral rites.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria, where a Christian wake service will be at 8:30 p.m. followed by an American Legion memorial service.

Memorials may be made to Bascom Right to Life, St. Patrick's Church or Community Hospice Care, Tiffin.

Marvin J. 'Bud' Helkey Jr.

Marvin J. Helkey Jr., 63, of 60 N. SR 101, Lot 13, Tiffin, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at his home.

He was born Nov. 11, 1938, in Tiffin, to Marvin J. Helkey Sr. and Marguerite (Scheer) Helkey. On June 21, 1969, he married Carol (Shawberry) Bowers. She survives in Tiffin.

Other survivors include: three sons, Stephen Helkey, Marvin J. Helkey III, and Shaun Helkey, all of Tiffin; three step sons, Michael Bowers of Tiffin, Randy Bowers of Ashville, N.C. and Kevin Bowers of Nevada, Texas; a step daughter, Kim Ranker of Mocksville, N.C.; a brother, John (Vickie) Helkey of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Judy (Don) Zimak of Marion and Mrs. Margie (Robert) Sheeley of Enumclaw, Wash; two grandchildren, Sharon and Krystal Helkey of Washington; eight step grandchildren, Jennifer Bowers of Tiffin, Josh and Elana Bowers of North Carolina; Peter, Bobby and Phillip Ranker of North Carolina; Dylan and Presley Bowers of Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Helkey was a graduate of Tiffin Columbian High School. He worked for 39 years at American Standard, working as a caster and in the shipping department, retiring in 1996. He was also employed at Coppus Motors in Tiffin. Mr. Helkey was a member of the Tiffin Eagle 402. He served in the Tiffin Unit of the US Army Reserves for 22 years. He was an avid Ohio State Buckeye and NASCAR fan.

It was Mr. Helkey's wishes that there be no visitation or funeral services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice Care in Tiffin.

Martha Ann Brendel

Martha Ann Brendel, 72, formerly of Carrie Lane, Resident of St. Catherine's Care Center in Fostoria, died 10:45 p.m. Monday, Aug, 5, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital in Toledo.

She was born Feb. 22, 1930, in Seneca County to George and Annabelle (Bartlebaugh) Hakes. She first married Cletus Grine on March 19, 1946, in Columbus. He died in January of 1978. She then married James Brendel on May 19, 1979, in Minnesota. He died in March of 1996.

Surviving are: five sons, George Grine of Atlanta, Ga., Richard and Mark Grine of Tiffin, William Grine of Baltimore, Cletus Grine of Billings, Mont.; three daughters, Brenda Capehart and Anna Shoemaker of Fostoria, Cindy Suffecool of Tiffin; a step son, James Brendel of Gillette, Wyo.; five step daughters, Rose Leaver of Casper, Wyo., Mary Ann Bannon of Clancey, Mont., Terrie Griffin and Lydia Clouse, both of Billings, Mont., Ida Mutchie of Livingston, Mont.; 17 grandchildren and 27 step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, a daughter, Sharon Grine and a brother, William Hakes.

Mrs. Brendel was a homemaker and member of the Mormon Church in Tiffin.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Fostoria, with the Rev. Russell Gumm officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be made to Westchester Group Home, 237 Westchester Square North, Billings, MT 59105.

The Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

William A. Streicher

William A. Streicher, 79, of St. Francis Care Centre in Green Springs, formerly of Parkside Blvd., Toledo, died 2:40 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at St. Francis Care Centre.

He was born on June 8, 1923, in Toledo, to the late August and Angela (Pilliod) Streicher.

Survivors include: a brother, Rev. Bernard Streicher of Cleveland.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Francis Villa Maria Chapel in Green Springs. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, Toledo.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to the service at St. Francis Chapel on Friday. There will a Prayer Service at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel.

The Engle-Young Funeral Home in Green Springs is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert J. Berglands

Robert J. Berglands, 84, of Orchard St., Bellevue, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at Bellevue Care Center.

He was born May 22, 1918, in Riga, Latvia, to the late Janis and Emily (Reitmanis) Berglands. On June 1, 1947 he married Erika (Stefani) Berglands. She survives in Bellevue.

Other survivors include: a son, Paul Berglands of Bellevue; two daughters, Baiba Linell of Milford, Mich., Ieva Cappo of Ann Arbor, Mich. and three grandchildren.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bellevue.

Family will meet friends following the service in the church lounge.

The Auxter Funeral Home in Bellevue is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary L. Orians DelBene

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at McClurkin Funeral Home and a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Rose Church, both in Girard, for Mrs. Mary Lorraine Orians DelBene, 98, of Girard, who died Friday evening, Aug. 2, 2002, at her home.

Mrs. DelBene was born Aug. 23, 1903, in Wyandot County, Ohio, a daughter of Charles and Gertrude Krebs Orians. She came to the area in 1928.

She was a graduate of Ohio Northern University, Ada. She also had attended Bowling Green State University and Youngstown College.

She had taught school in Wyandot County and later at St. Rose School in Girard. She was a member of the church, its Alter and Rosary Society and a charter member of its senior citizens group. She also was a member of the Girard Senior Citizens Club, a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Girard Post 235; a member of Mary Chesney Chapter of D.A.R.; a member of several area garden clubs and the Girard Historical Society.

Her husband, Attorney Michael A. DelBene, whom she married June 28, 1928, died Nov. 17, 1960.

She leaves four daughters, Dorothy Mohn of Girard, Norene Beach and her husband Loren of Alexandria, Va., Joyce Acheson of Sarasota, Fla., Pauline Boye and her husband Donald of Warren; a son, Charles DelBene and his wife, Jane Ellen of Laguna Niguel, Ca.; 25 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren.

Two sisters, Helen Rall and Constance Arnold and a brother, Emmet Orians are deceased.

Linda Kay Immel

Linda Kay Immel, 57, of Bowling Green and formerly of Findlay and North Baltimore, died 6:05 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital in Maumee.

She was born Oct. 5, 1944, in Tiffin, to the late Lester John and Elizabeth (Baker) Immel.

Surviving are: two sisters, Janice T. Yost of Mansfield and Nancy S. Burley of Fostoria; a brother, Charles Frederick Immel of Clearwater, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Mann-Hare Funeral Home in Fostoria, with the Rev. Donald Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in Fairmont cemetery in Tiffin.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Howard M. Distel

Howard M. Distel, 86, 85 Glenn St., Tiffin, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, in St. Rita Medical Center, Lima.

He was born March 6, 1916, in Tiffin, to the late Arthur and Cora (Schultz) Distel. On Oct. 5, 1940, in St. Joseph Church, Tiffin, he married Mary Ellen Reinman. She died Jan. 19, 1995.

Surviving are a son, Stephen J. Distel of Green Springs; two daughters, Mrs. Stephen (Marilyn) Brown of Little Falls, Minn. and Mrs. Mark (Elaine) Sendelbach of Tiffin; four brothers, Robert, Richard and John Distel, all of Tiffin and James Distel of California; five sisters, Henrietta Smyser and Mrs. John (Agnes) Zeiger, both of Tiffin; Mrs. William (Dorothy) Dickson of Michigan and Sister Joan of Arc (Hilda), OSU, and Sister St. Martin (Martha), OSU, both of Toledo; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A son, Keith A. Distel; and three brothers, Gene, Harvey and Arthur, are deceased.

Mr. Distel, a 1934 Calvert High School graduate, was employed as a machinist/assembler at the National Machinery for 44 years, retiring in 1978. He was a member of National Machinery Quarter Century Club, Cotillion Club, United Commercial Travelers, Seneca Hills Senior Golf League and a very active member of St. Joseph Parish. He had helped build the church's steeple around 1935.

A funeral Mass will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, in St. Joseph Church, with the Rev. James K. Say as celebrant. The Rosary will be prayed at 12:15 p.m Saturday at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery.

Visitation is 6-9 p.m. today at Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home, where Quarter Century Club members will meet in body at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Support Group of Tiffin and Seneca County or a charity of the donor's choice.
